Dawn Sloane can be unpredictably temperamental, and has a habit of speaking around an issue, sometimes just to hear herself talk, I think. But here’s the thing: She’s a damn good representative to the people in her district.
I didn’t learn about this until recently, but a couple of years ago, Sloane threw a hissy fit in a closed session council meeting. Her anger was related to council’s decision to back out from a two-plant sewer system—
one in the south end, one in the north end—and instead dump all the peninsula’s sewage into the north end. Sloane didn’t get the decision reversed, but she got $1 million from the sewage program put into a community development fund that continues to fund good works in the north end.
In the past year, Sloane has had to deal with about a half-dozen controversial development proposals in her district, including the Waterside Centre and the Trillium condos. Agree with her or not, but it took political courage to oppose those projects, and she won a tight re-election fight afterwards.
Recently, Sloane has been pushing the concept of a neighbourhood parking permit system, with the proceeds being used to fund transit. At first, she was a voice in the wilderness, seen as perhaps simply trying to reserve parking for people in her downtown district. But as time went by, other councillors from across the political spectrum have realized that Sloane’s proposal has great merit, and will help bridge transit funding. Probably, neighbourhood permitting will become a reality in the next couple of years.

C’mon Tim. Sloane is the biggest joke of a councillor HRM has ever had. Coarse, crude, and none too smart, Sloane manages to oppose every new development proposed for the downtown without offering any alternative route. Her standups at council are often simply preachy, rambling, embarrassing filibusters that contain zero substance. Plus she never met a microphone or TV camera she didn’t like. She deserves an F.
Doing interviews and media realations for District 12 is part of the job.
Fantastic report Dawn…I think it underlies what you are really about and shows just how passionate you are about Downtown Halifax District 12!
Dawn Sloane had nothing to do with the $1 Million community integration fund that went to the North End. That concept was championed by Maurice Lloyd – former Dartmouth City planner and first head of the Harbour Solutions Project.
If you check your back issues you’ll also see that Sloane opposed the north end project and sided with a group that attempted to sue the project claiming the location of the treatment plant was racially motivated. The solution she put forward?.. move the plan across the street. Yes, 15 meters and it would no longer be a human rights issue. The motivation? Well, hard to say with Sloane, but perhaps it was no coincidence that moving the site across the road would put the far south end of the plant just close enough to the gentrified area near Staples that the community integration fund would have to at least be split between the long-time residents of the north end, and the recently moved in yuppified (but politically active) group that had the councillors ear.
Sloane is truly out of her depth on most issues, blows with the wind and, I suggest, has her head firmly up her arse when it comes to her grass roots appeal.
Dawn Sloane is a bombastic schoolyard bully who has all the grace of a wounded elephant. It’s truly amazing to watch her flip-flop on a position she’s taken after a single conversation with a single person. I hope District 12 voters come to their senses in the next election and vote for someone who can actually process the issues and articulate a reasonable position – and stick to it!
Dawn Sloane recently testified for Patrick Murphy since he was an alleged victim of vandalism 2 nights during city council meetings apparently some woman randomly sprayed painted ‘rape and rapist’ on his van…….. twice…. for no reason…..
Rather than focus on the fact that we have a serious issue in city council and crown and police that they allow their peers to refuse lie detectors for rape while getting wages form tax payers……Sloane the Moan turned her testimony time into a pre- election commercial campaign speech to the point I had my my lawyer…is this a Dawn Sloane commercial….sadly she pimped this opportunity for the public to know how morally depraved our city is…
Instead it was memememememmememememe and me and I do this and I do that and I love me and everyone knows me and loves me they know I am Dawn Sloane…… dang..
Sloane stop the dang narcissistic moan!
Sadly she is so self absorbed she does not even realize that Murphy selected her as predators do, he seen her as the weakest link on council that would help him with his fake victimology…he did not ask anyone else to assist him with pictures of the rape words…he knew better…!
I wanted to add…….verbatim where possible…. byte on how show never found a mike she didn’t like…..when she was asked during her testimony under oath….if she knew who I was she stated that she didnot ( which was a lie- she received an email as did all councillors in 02/05/05 about Murphy being a ‘possible’ rapist) but then went on and on and on and on to talk about how it is not uncommon for people to think she knows them but that everyone knows her….blink blink…
..so that while she didnot know me I probably knew her…..blink blink……..
at least she got off her ass and does something for her district..remember our last councillar,Mr.Downey, voted in three times and NEVER did a thing, never spoke in council,he was pathetic, shes’a delight!!!!
