This first video in a collaboration between The Coast and PLANifax takes a look at the recent changes to the Nova Centre’s design that were approved by city council. There will be more on the convention centre and more videos in future, although not necessarily together.

The convention centre now under construction downtown will be the physical manifestation of our civic aspirations, our collective dream come true. But will that dream turn dark, and become a nightmare?

  1. Agree about the public funding part. Who cares about the HRM by design part? Loosen that top button and take it easy.

  2. “Giving out exemptions to a few people is a really easy way to piss off everyone else…”

Sometimes “pissing people off” is the only way to get anything done. I’m not exactly pro-convention centre, but to simply not do things at the risk of pissing people off is incredibly short-sighted and a great way ensure that nothing is ever accomplished.

Also, invest in a mic. The intro music damn near blew me away because of how loud I had to have the volume set to make out what you were saying. It’ll make everything a lot more clear.

  3. What a douchey video. Throwing music over it doesn’t help drive home your point (or lack there of).

  4. I can hardly wait to ride on our new monorail. I’m so glad we determined that we need it.

(simpsons reference followed by sarcasm for those not into reading between the lines.)

  5. This is getting really unfortunate with the news that Thiel is bringing litigation against the province. He has a good case.
This isn’t good for anyone. Lets hope our new peeps in provincial government can figure out a good conclusion that doesn’t cost us too much. We’ve already spent the pothole money on this project, and lawyers aren’t cheap.

  6. I just saw this video, I was a bit surprised that the journalist did not touch on the street closure topic (or if he did, it was quick). A good summary of what is going on when you can hear over the music inserted…

As for “pissing off people” comment here, I’d be pissed off too when the proposals I brought in for a tower were shot down because they were deemed too tall and this one gets a green light. Oh, and let’s not forget the one with a green light comes with a cost to taxpayers while the ones shot down were being paid for entirely by investors.

  7. Just to get your facts straight. This development approval predates HRMbD so it does not fall under that set of regulations. Your video and its claim of height and other HRMbD rules being broken is a bit of a “red herring”. Your pole with the 85% result was done by the “save the view, heritage trust” group so we all know that’s garbage. Another fact that The Coast always fail to report is all or almost all Major Canadian city convention centers are partially or in whole publicly funded Like the Ottawa or Vancouver centers. They are a revenue generator for a city. They bring outside money into the local economy. It really is an easy concept to grasp.
Just to help you out and save you some money, The Roy development approval also predates HRMbD so don’t bother making a second video full of bogus claims. No need for thanks.
