To the editor,
I am writing in support of Jane Kansas’s article (“Who’s your daddy?” Dec 1).
I, like the authors of your letters to the editor from Dec 8, regard charitable work as very important, and I realize that many people concern themselves with the charitable work of the Christmas Daddies organization and not its name. But I also appreciate the importance of questioning whether the name Christmas Daddies reflects a sexism that, although much more pervasive in the past, still exists. It is important to understand the relationship between discrimination, poverty and charity.
Jane Kansas’s article is neither “disgusting” or “boring.” Nor is it “petty,” “ridiculous” or “crap.” If the authors of the letters to the editor want to champion charitable work, they should start by using more charitable language.
The Christmas spirit isn’t just about good will towards (men) “Daddies.”
