I was on a one-day vacation yesterday, but am back with exciting news of planes and boats crashing. A plane and a boat. And they didn’t crash so much as — well, you’ll see after the jump.
THAT SINKING FEELING
from Corner Brook, Nfld.
Clearwater Seafoods ran into a bit of trouble on the other side of the world this week. The seafood company had commissioned a $50-million clam fishing boat, but “sank in shallow waters while being towed from a shipyard in Taiwan to a nearby dry dock” reports Corner Brook’s Western Star daily paper.
The Halifax-based says none of the workers aboard was injured, but warned investors in a news release that the accident will delay delivery of the vessel and impact expected profits next year.
“This vessel was expected to add to our clam business profit in 2008,” said the release. (story here)
That’s a real pity about profits not getting added to. But in case you’re wondering, none of the few dozen workers aboard at the time was hurt.
PLANE LUCKY
from St. John’s
CBC is reporting a safe landing after Air Canada flight 656 declared an emergency last night.
The Embraer jet had 98 passengers and crew on board when the pilot reported flap problems while en route from Halifax to St. John’s.
The emergency call triggered a response that saw rescue units, pumpers and ambulances converge on the airport. (story here)
The plane made it to St. John’s without casualties. No word on how this will effect Air Canada’s profits.
GREEN SCENE

The London Free Press is looking forward to the big environmentalists meeting going on now in Halifax.
Roughly 60 participants from North America, Africa, the South Pacific and Europe will discuss health and government issues through an environmental perspective at the Global Ecological Integrity Group’s 15th conference.
Conference co-chair Colin Soskolne said the conference is effective because it brings together experts from a broad range of areas including theology, ecology, economics, health, and traditional and indigenous culture. (story here)
It actually sounds like an interesting gathering. One seminar will look at how “the environment has been devastated while, paradoxically, human health has improved.”
