Two late-breaking entries for the Seven Wonders of Canada contest: The museum’s beloved tortoise, Gus. Rodney MacDonald’s recently returned spine. Full links below.

SLOW AND STEADY
from London (Ontario)
It turns out Gus the tortoise has fans well beyond Metro. Yesterday his birthday was observed at the NS Museum, and the London Free Press ran a congratulatory piece today:

At about 85 years of age, he’s a reminder to children and adults of the durability of this species, provided their habitat isn’t damaged by human beings. (story here)

And for the 85th year in a row, he didn’t receive his birthday wish of a mate.

MAC-LASH
from the blogosphere
Bill Casey’s vote against the federal budget last week reminds me of that doomed protestor standing up to the tanks in Tiananmenn Square. Casey’s protest was so effective that it even inspired premier Rodney MacDonald to finally speak out against the abusive treatment Nova Scotia and its Atlantic Accord have received from the federal Conservatives. And when RodMac suddenly grows a backbone, the country takes notice. A sampling of the response is here from CTV Ottawa guy David Akin, and here from a Conservative nutjob.

D’you ever get a weird feeling that you want to cheer on RodMac? Anyone who knows the name of this unusual affliction, send it here.
