Remarks: The wooden handrails on the bridge have rotted away, says Rideout. When they were taken down, cracks in the concrete were found and so now a full engineering study of the bridge has commenced. No Laval here, no siree. Tenders go out next week, and it’ll be up and running, er, sometime.

Who’s Responsible?: Kevin Rideout, superintendent of construction services for transportation and public works for HRM, and winner of The Coast’s “longest job title” contest, 490-4821.

  1. This bridge is way substandard for wheelchairs in terms of grade. It’s interesting that it is meant to be the way to access the front doors of the courthouse. It is also the only access to the HRM offices above the ferry terminal. This used to be the planning office – still may be – which demonstrates the HRM commitment to access. They do have a power door, which they think solves the problem. To get to the court, you need to wheel through the equally dangerous underground parking lot. My money is on the restoration of the bridge as is because no one is in charge of accessibility in HRM. Visit http;//jmcgs.blogspot.com for a wheelchair level view of Halifax
