the ability not to draw is one thing, but why does the Coast allow such stupidity in the comic section? Most are poorly drawn and severly depressing.I know you get what you pay for(and obiously no one is getting paid here), but seriously, is this the best metro has to offer? Just once I would like the muscles in my face to pull the sides of my mouth in an upward direction instead of wondering how abusive the artist’s parents were during there adolescents.

Ah, for a single page of Gasoline Alley. What a lark! Hahaha, I chuckle just to think of it now. Never will we see the likes of it in this Coastal Weekly rag, eh, Captain Poopers? With which battalion did you serve?
The comics are relatively clever and original. You just don’t like them since you grew up reading For Better or for Worst and Family Circus.
lol gentleman, thanks for a larf at the end of a long day
I worked as a ‘alternative’ cartoonist back in the 70s and 80s and, other than Mike Holmes who at least possesses some originality in his premise, the other two strips are visually unappealing, self-indulgent tripe. Trash ’em.
I agree, and other than a space-time issue around the Peggy’s Cove plane crash the Holmes piece has been growing better every week. He’s definately honing his craft and it shows.
The other two strips would make better ad space. I hardly ever glance at them.
I’ve been reading/collecting comics well past the point that I should have as an adult, if that counts for anything.
I have a pretty extensive collection of old comics and graphic novels, including three dozen original underground comix from the 60s and 70s. I’m also heavily into cartoons, retro and current adult fare. I’ve been doing this for over 45 years so there’s really no age limit when it comes to enjoying comics, Cranky. I certainly understand the passion.
I gotta say, Mike Holmes’ strip is enjoyable. The captioned photograph strip usually gets some sort of reaction in my brain, but the monster-y one, I just don’t get it. What the hell is that one goin’ on about? I can’t appreciate the artwork, and it usually makes no sense.
I’ve seen better in The Coast.
Gotta agree with the crowd here. Mike Holmes’ strip is good. I love the true stories.
I know theres no age limit, I love ’em. Though today’s superhero comics leave something to be desired, stuff like Mike Holmes stuff, while in short supply or infrequently published (Optic Nerve, Stray Bullets, Eightball), is good reading. Maybe it IS an age thing. Maybe the kids get as much enjoyment out of X-Men 450 (or whatever) as I did reading X-Men 124 for the first time all those years ago….
Can the weird stuff and sign more local comics creators. Thats what I say. There’s enough of them. If they can’t handle the workload of a weekly maybe they could alternate weeks and just do one a month?
Love Eightball, Cranky. Also Peter Bagge and his HATE series, Joe Matt, Art Speigelman and, of course, Daniel Clowes. I have several old Marvel comics from the early to mid 60s including a parody of their own product ‘Not Brand Eccchh’.
I’d love to see some young local cartoonists get a chance to show their stuff through the Coast. Why this paper hangs on to these two no-talents is beyond me, unless they’re related to the publisher or something.
Related to the publisher? Why would they be? And what good would that do? It’s not all that illustrious to be related to a newspaper publisher nowadays.
Note to all: If you know someone who can draw something as good or better once a week WITHOUT FAIL, then, by all means, send them along. This isn’t to say that there’s anything wrong with any of the cartoonists we have now, but seriously, if you have some art that makes your bitches look even worse when printed alongside, let’s see it.
Good call, Let Ed.
BAAAAAAHBAHAHA AHAHAHAHHA LOLOL @ OP. SO TRUE, SO GOOD.
oh but youre all right, the photo ones are good.
Any Berke Breathed fans on here as far as comic fans go? (I think thats how you spell his name)
Besides, you should all know Im talking about Opus and Bill and the rest anyway. Best comic of my life :). Even though it was being published before I was born haha.
Ah, Let Ed let us in on the skinny.
There is no talent in the pool to draw from.
That’s why we’re stuck with mediocre-at-best comics.
good to know that in an entire city there are only 3 people who can come close to filling the requirements.
(to be honest, if you were turned down in favor of any of the current 3, you have no talent and should move on)
And you call me egotistical, zZz??? Here you think you know everyone and everything. Newsflash! The world is a pretty big place that doesn’t revolve around you, your knowledge or, in this case, your lack of it.
actually, I’m pretty sure I made it plain and clear that I know almost no-one in the city… wasn’t raised here, wasn’t educated here, just found a job and moved.
I’ve also recanted and admitted to making mistakes…
I’m sorry Kay, you got me. I do admit it….
I don’t know everything.
You are right, I’m not “the one”, nor do I know Kung Fu.
I’m also pretty sure if they advertised that anyone with ideas and drawing ability can have a comic, they would actually get a few reumes/portfolios to paruse through and spruce up the weekly a bit.
and yes, you are egotistical (at least at times).
