Were Herrnstein and Murray (“The Bell Curve: Intelligence and Class Structure in American Life”1994) on to something? Clearly, “tha sista’s” is speaking “ebonics,” a form of pidgin English and, one supposes, is black. But what does being black have to do with cognitive ability? A lot if Herrnstein and Murray are right.
They present a number of studies reporting black-white differences in cognitive test scores. The first, scored over the period 1918-1990 reported a B/W difference of sixteen IQ points. Herrnstein and Murray dispute the claim that the disproportionate results are due to culturally questions favouring whites. “The B/W is wider on items that appear to be culturally neutral (mathematics) than on items that appear to be culturally loaded” (who wrote Hamlet).
Similarly, the differences between B/W scores is not attributable to socioeconomic status, i.e. when black children advance up the socioeconomic ladder and are less exposed to environmental deficits, they will do better and close the gap with white children of their class.
Tests have shown that, while the scores for each group rise as socioeconomic levels rise, “the magnitude of the B/W difference does not decrease. Indeed, it gets larger as people move up from the very bottom of the socioeconomic ladder.” (p.287-8) So what about genetics?
According to Herrnstein and Murray, IQ is 60% heritable and that one standard deviation (16 IQ points) separates American blacks from whites while a fifth of a standard deviation (three IQ points) favours East Asians over whites or eighteen IQ points over blacks.
So where does this leave “tha sista’s”? That’s a good question.
