That region has known nothing but war for at least the last century. The Brits took control Palestine from the Turks during the First World War. They immediately set out to establish a Jewish homeland in Palestine and subsequent Jewish settlers were attacked by Arabs. During the 1920s Britain, through the League of Nations, sought to partition Palestine between Arabs and Jews to help protect the Jewish settlers. The Jews welcomed the idea, the Arabs didn’t and the fighting continued.
During the Second World War Britain started to reverse it’s policy of welcoming Jews to Palestine and actually blocked the immigration of European Jews. Jews were smuggled in anyway and Jewish extremists started a tactic of guerilla warfare against the Brits in charge.
Just after WWII, Britain decided it had had enough and gave the responsibility of Palestine to the United nations. In 1948, the United nations created the state of Israel allocating a portion of Palestine.
Surrounding Arab nations immediately attacked Israel, were repelled and Israel ended up with 50% more real estate than the UN allotted them.
You can keep going on with the Six Day War and other skirmishes but one gets the idea, this is one very hot area. The Palestinians have to accept Israel IMO. That’s the beginning of the end to this insanity. On both sides, some way has got to be found to put hate aside. I have no answers personally nor do I have much hope that things will change in my lifetime.
I remember the Peace Treaty between Israel and Egypt in 1977 with Menachem Begin and Anwar Sadat shaking hands in the Rose Garden, I really thought then that this was the end to the fighting. Nope. Sadat was assassinated in 1982 by Islamic extremists.
The whole Middle East is an area rife with poverty and fundamentalist religion.. and violence. This has been passed down from generation to generation and has become part of the cultural fabric. The short answer, of course, is “survival.” Been reading the news lately? Forget your “stones and spears” and start thinking about rockets with warheads. And that’s why the blockade exists, to prevent more of the same being smuggled into Gaza. And do you think Hamas, with its “stones and spears” is alone? What about Hezbollah in Lebanon, what about Al Assad in Syria? What about a soon-to-be nuclear Iran? But the real question relates to the justification, if any, of Hamas’ attacks on Israel. Is there one?
A little history would help. Israel was created by the United Nations in 1948. Before that the area of Palestine was part of the Ottoman Empire, on the wrong side in WWI, and was then mandated to Britain after its defeat. Britain wanted to keep on the good side of the Arabs – Lawrence of Arabia, Glub Pasha and all the rest – and so wanted to limit Jewish settlement. However, the British government had previously passed the Balfour Declaration promising a Jewish homeland in the mandated area resulting in in an impossible situation. The Zionist movement geared up in Europe, intent on sending out emigrants to settle the area and create a Jewish homeland but the British blockade(!) stopped them, or at least slowed them down. Ironically, there arose militant Jewish groups – the Stern Gang, Irgun, etc. – which waged terrorist attacks on the British occupiers culminating in the dtestruction of the George V hotel in Jerusalem. It is ironic because the Jewish Stern Gang and Irgun fighting the British were the equivalents of the Islamic Hamas and Hezbollah fighting Israel. Anyway, Britain was out with the creation of Israel in 1948 which then had to engage the surrounding hostile Arab population in three wars, 1948-49, the Six Day War (1967) and the 1973 Yom Kippur war which saw them stop the Arab assaults including that of Egypt. So the current war between Israel and Gaza is a continuation of the same old story.
The justification of the Palestinian cause is based on prior occupation of the territory while the Israeli cause is based on the Balfour Declaration of 1917 and the UN declaration creating the state of Israel in 1948 so there appears to be no decisive resolution. The question then arises as to the tactics currently employed by Hamas which, in turn, raises raises questions about the nature of the Palestinian mind.
It was a no-win situation from the beginning. The Israeli Air Force, as ir previously had done, made short work of the Gazan offensive. It was suprising that a truce has just been declared since one would have assumed that Gaza had the backing of a near-nuclear Iran which would have raised the ante. If Israel pre-emptively nuked Iran or Iran pre-emptively nuked Israel, the world would have been sucked into the conflict. But, fortunately, that never happened. So the only option for Gaza was to stay cool and plead its case at the UN where it has considerable popular support, particularly in the General Assembly. But it didn’t. It attacked Israel. This raises questions about the stability of the Palestinian mind.
What is it like to be a Palestinian? What is it like to have a Palestinian mind? It seems that it is one ruled by irrational passions which, in international affairs, can make it something of a loose cannon. They appear to be prepared to die, or have their civilian population die, for a hopeless cause pursued militarily. This has had a rebound effect in Israel where popular opinion wants an end to the conflict which would mean wiping Hamas and its followers out completely. But that will never happen.

Trading land for peace is not the best option when you are surrounded by nations with large mechanized armies. The IDF is good; it is not invincible. The 1973 war was a damned near run thing. Israel came uncomfortably close to losing it and might have were it not for a massive infusion of American military aid. I suspect that every Israeli leader knows full well that while the U.S. may be happy to provide them with equipment and munitions, they will never provide manpower, and that is where they are most vulnerable.

As a matter of fact during the Six Day War they took a lot of territory and later relinquished it for the sake of peace. Palestinians do deserve to live as human beings. It is their leadership that is causing their hardship. If the leadership were to stop their rocket attacks and live in peace, then there would be peace. Is that so hard to understand?

Do the palestinians and their supporters foresee a future Jewish presence in the region?
What do they believe needs to be done to the Jews to secure a palestinian state? Do they think that if they kill enough of them, the rest will simply, to use the words of that foul bitch Helen Thomas :”go back where they came from”?
Do they honestly believe that once the region is made Jew-free, that they can just move into the vacated space and the fields and orchards will continue to produce, the cities will continue to maintain themselves, the high-tech industries will continue to produce innovations – all by themselves?

I am over 60 and the Armed Forces thinks I’m too old to track down terrorists. You can’t be older than 42 to join the military. They’ve got the whole thing ass-backwards.
Instead of sending 18-year olds off to fight, they ought to take us old guys. You shouldn’t be able to join a military unit until you’re at least 35.
For starters, researchers say 18-year-olds think about sex every 10 seconds. Old guys only think about sex a couple of times a month, leaving us more than 280,000 additional seconds per day to concentrate on the enemy.
Young guys haven’t lived long enough to be cranky, and a cranky soldier is a dangerous soldier. ‘My back hurts! I can’t sleep, I’m tired and hungry.’ We are bad-tempered and impatient, and maybe letting us kill some asshole that desperately deserves it will make us feel better and shut us up for a while..
An 18-year-old doesn’t even like to get up before 10am. Old guys always get up early to pee, so what the hell. Besides, like I said, I’m tired and can’t sleep and since I’m already up, I may as well be up killing some fanatical son-of-a-bitch.
If captured we couldn’t spill the beans because we’d forget where we put them. In fact, name, rank, and serial number would be a real brainteaser.
Boot camp would be easier for old guys. We’re used to getting screamed and yelled at and we’re used to soft food. We’ve also developed an appreciation for guns. We’ve been using them for years as an excuse to get out of the house, away from the screaming and yelling.
They could lighten up on the obstacle course however… I’ve been in combat and never saw a single 20-foot wall with rope hanging over the side, nor did I ever do any pushups after completing basic training.
Actually, the running part is kind of a waste of energy, too… I’ve never seen anyone outrun a bullet.
An 18-year-old has the whole world ahead of him. He’s still learning to shave, to start a conversation with a pretty girl. He still hasn’t figured out that a baseball cap has a brim to shade his eyes, not the back of his head.
These are all great reasons to keep our kids at home to learn a little more about life before sending them off into harm’s way.
Let us old guys track down those terrorists. The last thing an enemy would want to see is a couple million pissed off old farts with bad attitudes and automatic weapons, who know that their best years are already behind them.
