So I was lucky enought to get a ticket to the Modest Mouse show last night. For the most part it was really great.

My friend and I got there pretty early to secure a spot close to the front. By the time the band came on it was bumper to bumper and 40 degrees. (There’s no air conditioning at the Forum) That’s fine. We didn’t mind being sweaty and crowded. It’s a rock show after all.

But as soon as the lights went down three people around us started smoking. And I’m not talking joints either. They started chain smoking cigarettes. Joints I could have handled. I find that smoke way less irritating. But my friend and I had to move from our plum spot to get away from it.

I promise you I’m not some anti-smoking nazi. Smoke ’em if ya got ’em. I really don’t care what other adults do as long as it doesn’t affect me. But when you choose to light up in a very hot confined space it does affect me. And it’s against the law.

So thanks for that. We had to move from our great spot because a handfull of people were being selfish jerks. Fortunately the Forum is small and there pretty much isn’t a bad seat in the house.

Yeah yeah yeah. I should have told security. I know. But it pisses me off that adults who obviously know the rules choose to break them anyway because they don’t care about anyone else.

  1. I’m just glad the MM concert is finally over and people can stop bitching about people scalping tickets to it!

I’ve smoked at concerts before, and not felt the slightest bit bad about it. If everyone around me is smoking weed, I don’t see anything wrong with lighting a cigarette. The OP says they wouldn’t have minded if those people were smoking pot; but a cigarette!?!? How is smoking a cigarette worse than smoking a joint?

  2. “I’ve smoked at concerts before, and not felt the slightest bit bad about it.”

That, my friends, is why smokers have a bad name…

  3. And yet everyone who smokes weed at concerts aren’t labeled with the same stigma? Why is one ok and the other not?

Also, I’ve gone to concerts (specifically at the Forum), where I’ve tried to go outside for a smoke and been told by security that I wouldn’t be allowed back in. What’s an addict to do?

  4. I too went to the MM concert last night, and while there were plentying of people smoking pot in the parking lot, I didn’t see a single person smoking joints inside the venue.

Perhaps pot smokers are just a bit more courteous?

  5. “And yet everyone who smokes weed at concerts aren’t labeled with the same stigma? Why is one ok and the other not?”

I think neither are OK, but I don’t expect much from the crowd at a concert. But I’m getting too old to want to cram myself in with hundreds of other sweaty smoky twenty somethings to get within feet of some guy who sounds better in the comfort of my own iPod. These days I enjoy the shows from the back better than being close to the stage.

  6. I don’t really think either are ok either Miles. I just take exception to the OP’s outrage at cigarette smoking at the concert, basically saying in the breath that if it had been pot, she wouldn’t have had a problem. I was once asked at a concert by someone to put out my cigarette, and that person’s friend was smoking a joint at the time. I find that a little hypocritical.

  7. Obviously you do think it’s okay, Nevermind. You just said you have no problem lighting up at a concert. Even when it’s in an indoor venue where smoking is prohibited by law. Even when it bothers people who are just there to enjoy the music.

I agree, the OP shouldn’t say smoking joints is okay, but smoking cigarettes isn’t. But that doesn’t take away from the fact that people who smoke indoors when it’s not allowed are jerks.

  8. If I had been allowed to go outside and come back in, like I mentioned in an earlier comment, I would have.

  9. If you can’t go 2 hours without a smoke, that’s your problem. Just because you have an additction doesn’t mean you can just ignore the rules. Like I said, it just makes you a jerk. Like I also said, you’re the reason non-smokers hate smokers.

  10. Hey, Tim is not the Bitch editor anymore. I’m the mirror-glassed surly cop now. I think y’all gave him a nervous breakdown. He hasn’t read the section in days and breaks into a cold sweat when I try to tell him about something funny that just happened in LTWWB. I only mention this because I suspect he’s a LTWWB addict. He’s quitting cold turkey, but it ain’t gonna last.

  11. Ha ha great tag.
I used to see this a fair amount back when the no-indoor-smoking rule was fresh on the books. Some douche in the middle of the crowd proudly puffing away like some kind of ass rebel, probably surreptitiously checking out the girls around him to see if they were impressed by his middle finger in The Man’s face. I find it didn’t take long for this behavior to no longer seem cute or transgressive.
Of course there will still be people who will light up if they can get away with it, ignoring the dirty looks. I have to agree with the OP and say that I would much rather smell pot smoke than tobacco, but that’s just me.

  12. Poor Tim – last’s week’s story must have done him in – by the way, it was an excellent article and covered everything I needed to know about Beachwhistle Point.

  13. Hawhawfuckinghaw to all the fucking scalpers stuck with tickets for 4-5 times what they were worth. You got what you deserved, cuntfluffs.

Kijiji is fucking hopeless for getting tickets. I had more luck networking on FB and managed to score one for one of my kids ($60) at 7 p.m. last night.

  14. Hey Andy, since the tags are so much fun, do you think you could set up a permanent section of the page where the tags could be posted as links to said bitches?

Then if people really want to come bitch about Metro Transit, they can quickly check the Another Bus Bitch section to see that they’re just repeating themselves.

  15. Man, it’s like bitchfest @ nevermind, smokers are minority man, you stand no chance. The new tag is awsome though.

  16. I like your idea, too PAS. I just asked to get the orange tags to function like tags, so if you click on it, you would be taken to a list of all bitches/articles that have been given the same tag. Sound good. I guess I could hijack this thread and ask: what would you like us to do to improve the bitch section(s)? Feel free to reiterate past complaints…

  17. I do feel a little ganged up on FA 🙂 Sometimes it’s fun to play devil’s advocate, especially when some peoples’ best comebacks in an argument are “You’re a jerk”. I knew this one is a losing battle though, so I gave up.

Andy: I’m sure we’d all love to see the comments back in the printed version of LTWWB, but i’m not sure if that’s your dept or not…

  18. Bring back the bitching hour!!!

Also, I prefer more recent comments…maybe 15-20? if you moved the top ten and top commenters sections up, you could fit lots more recent comments on the side. Sometimes I miss certain posts because they buried by the hight traffic on one or two threads.

  19. Oh it was this horrible technical glitch where anything posted between 1am and 2am would get posted as 1pm and stick around at the top of the “recent comments” tab until 1pm the next day. It was annoying.

  20. Also, if you’re going to make the recent comments section longer, it might help to have recent comments for all the love the way we… sections in one place. That way people will venture into other zones naturally if they see a good comment.

  21. I only have my phone for internet and I must say the site works great on my phone. I’ve never seen the site on a comp so I hope I’m not missing much!

  22. some people just don’t respect others. but on the point of snmoking inside,it is against the law,and you should have found a security guard.when i find myself in an area like that,i hold off til a break,or if only a couple hours, don’t have one til i’m on my way home.next time, nail the son bitch with the security,it will be your right.

  23. If you take the time to whine about it maybe bring it to the attention of people who can stop them,…security. If they blatantly disregard the law they know the risk. If you don’t say anything to anyone don’t say anything at all.

  24. Just goes to show smokers don’t give a damn. Police should have been called in and charge the establishment owners.

  25. “I didn’t see a single person smoking joints inside the venue.”
Really? Because I saw several. And it was all I could smell. I smoke cigarettes and marijuana but I didn’t smoke either well I was there.
I agree with the OP, joints are one thing but people shouldn’t have been smoking cigarettes in there.
Mind you, the freaking band were smoking cigarettes on stage so the audience probably felt like it was okay.
