Holy christ people, this is Canada! It snows here! Life goes on! When did Canadians become such wusses? That’s right—I called you a wuss! With the panic and hysteria around my workplace, and this city in general, you would think the weather forecast was for a 90% chance of morning apocalypse with an 85% chance of afternoon asteroid bombardment… It’s some snow people, it happens every winter. Take a deep breath, it will be OK… —Non-weather fearing Canadian

  1. Ugh – I’ve seen it on the news and weather network. It’s frigging ridiculous. Common folks, it’s really not that terrible!

  2. I have to leave work early because I have a child to pick up from daycare and I really don’t enjoy being on the roads when I don’t have to if there not that safe….especially with my little one in the car. But I’m not panicking. Yesterday I panicked a little trying to get up a hill – after watching 10 cars barely make it….and have to reverse and try again. But I worked yesterday until 2pm and I’m here at my desk again today…a little late but I’m here.

  3. I left work 90 minutes early not because I was afraid to get stuck, but because I wanted to play in the snow. I walked from downtown over the hill to Chebucto/windor with the biggest smile on my face ever.

I couldn’t see the top of the hill. There were tons of people sledding. My face actually hurts from how long I smiled. I love the winter.

  4. I think the panic is insurance related–it is very costly to get even a ding on your car these days–the cars fold ridiculously with the slightest of collusions.
Also, with both parents working now, mostly, or the large number of single parent homes, trying to get home to insurance your child’s safety is an issue as well.

  5. I’m damn glad I had the ‘warming’ juice at home when I got there…
of the 3 routes, only one bus came in an hour of waiting and I was denied entry because it was already full…. I couldn’t feel my feet after 20 or so mins.

the ride itself was fine… barely a half hour on a run that takes ~15

wasn’t that bad really… just a common topic for everyone to complain about.
Now off to build a fort and go SLEDDING this weekend…. if the weather doesn’t melt everything into a flash flood

  6. My office closed at 11:30am and the busses were still ontime at that point, HOWEVER, the 14 broke down at my stop and everyone from there piled in on my bus. And the dummies at the back wouldn’t move back so the driver had to stop, get off the bus, go to the back door and tell them to actually move back up the steps.

I got a seat, though. I squeezed in between this fat guy taking up two seats and some old lady who looked a little stoned. I don’t care if it was squished. It was my birthday and I’ll be damned if I’m standing on the bus on my birthday!

I got home at like 12:30 or so and had a nap for the rest of the day 🙂

  7. I agree with the OB. We have become weather weenies. Fuck the media has to stop this fucking disaster shit everytime a flake falls. But then again the media likes making a mountain out of a molehill as a certain “expose” in fuck knows how many parts in a certain daily. I guess they never read “Peter and the Wolf”.

  8. Exactly OP. People panic with the threat of 20+ cm of snow. The driving wasn’t as bad as the media reported it, and it would be interesting to see if those who slid off the road, were in accidents, etc had winter tires. I had no problems getting home, and none getting into my office early this morning. The plows did a good job and the main roads were clear, as were all the side streets I drove by. Hopefully some people got tickets for parking overnight on the roads 🙂

  9. You want to know what ridiculous is…yesterday coming home from Sackville, on the 102, I seen an SUV down in the meridian, with another smaller SUV right in behind it, with a 4 cylinder shitbox stuck behind that !
The blind leading the blind as it were.

Everyone was out of their vehicles trying to move the car,(which was spinning its shitty tires, as they all tried pushing) I couldn’t help laughing as I went by… the only vehicles moving without problems that I seen all the way home were 4×4 pickups WITH FUCKING STUDDED WINTER TIRES !
    Funny how that works ‘eh.
Studded snow tires…for DRIVING IN THE SNOW ! For the number of cars & vans & Suv’s I seen off the road, stuck or doing 30 kms an hour or less… it showed me there sure were a lot of 3 season tires out there on the roads.
That IMO needs to change…if all you have on is 3 season tires, in that type of weather ,your vehicle should be banned from the roads until they are CLEARED.
The simplest way to do that is, your vehicle isn’t equipped, your insurance is null , void, GONEZO. So if anything happens you the vehicle owner becomes 100% responsible.

  10. I don’t panic at the prospect of large amounts of snow.

I save my panic for things like zombie apocalypse and asteroid bombardment.

    But I am well-prepared for even those calamities . . .

  11. would zombies die if they froze? or would they come to life when thawed? i don’t remember that from the handbook

  12. According to WWZ that’s exactly what happens. There’s an account of American refugees in northern Manitoba. Now serving, Donner. Party of 12

  13. the boy has that book…makes perfect sense. flesh eating references sure do rawk the bitch. snow and zombies…what fun, all that blood

  14. paingirl,

I’ll check my copy of Max Brooks’ Zombie Survival Guide and get back to you.

If I can find it. My family room looks like Ivan’s bookstore . . .

  15. It’s not cool when school is open and you have to drive there, almost killing yourself in the process … and I live in Halifax proper. Suck it Dalhousie.

  16. most people became wusses, right after they brought out that wonderful youth justice act. then they all became pussies, afraid to even raise their voices at their kids. it wasn’t long before it started to gather in other things, to become what we have now. one big fucking chickenshit chicken nation, who by the way, are not even allowed to have chickens in their yards, it life just fucking grand?
