I cannot stand you. We met in first year and I thought you were annoying. Then you stop going to classes, fail them, and now your back. Back telling anyone who’ll listen that you’re bipolar. I must have heard you loudly tell at least seven people already. So you’re an attention whore. Fine, whatever. Then I hear you going on about how you got thousands of dollars off of your tuition because you have this “disability”. FUCK YOU. I have an actual ‘disability’, and I don’t get shit because I don’t want to be given special treatment. I could get the money off if I asked but I’ve been dealing with this my whole life and I am just as able as anyone else to get this education without hand outs, why? Because I’ve worked hard to overcome it all my life, I DEAL WITH IT. In fact, I’ve come so far that no one in any of our classes has noticed my condition, not even you. It’s none of their business, and people treat you differently when they find out. I don’t need the money, and neither do you. I’m not angry because you’re getting money off and I’m not. I’m pissed because you’re using your little trendy emotional problems as an excuse for failing classes, while the rest of us work through our emotional shit on our own and still find time to have a job on the side and uh, not fail class. I’m sure half the student population could be diagnosed with bipolar disorder if they tried. Your taking money from people who actually need it, in what is probably the least accessible university in the province. What the FUCK kind of a disability is fucking bullshit bipolar disorder? Let me introduce you to my friend with CP and you can explain to him exactly how hard your mood swings makes getting an education.

  1. Yeah, I know someone like this. She said her bad childhood was enough reason not to pay back her student loans. When she got the loans, she’d go to school long enough to get the cash in her account and then she’d travel the world with the money.

  2. Bipolarity is some serious shit with true sufferers of the issue. I know some folks who are diagnosed bi-polar and still live well taking medication, seeking out help/therapy and just attempting to move on with their lives.

One of my best friends in the entire world is bi-polar and he puts the work in that is needed to get ahead in life. He’s currently returning to school and maintaining a steady job while also volunteering as a DJ and promoter on the side.

Absolutely – there are people out there who make excuses and will continue to make excuses for themselves and/or others. However, not everyone with a ‘mental illness’ looks for the easy-way-out and all they will ask for is that you attempt to “understand” the problems they have. No handout or sympathy trolling at all; just some genuine understanding.

  3. Whatever…for practically every disability out there, there’s someone who thinks it’s bullshit, your own disability included probably. Attention whores are annoying, especially when they use their health to try to make people sorry for them, but you obviously know nothing about bipolar disorder, and think, like most, that brain disorders don’t happen because our brain has a magical power shield that keeps it from ever malfunctioning (or some shit). You sound like just a really angry asshole, honestly.

  4. Bipolar, or as it used to be called Manic Depression, is a real disorder and I have a brother who committed suicide to prove it……
Not looking for sympathy just stating the truth.

  5. That sucks, BF! I’m sorry to hear and would like to thank you for sharing that with us. Stating something like that would not be easy.

  6. One facet of dealing with a mental disorder can be attention whoring. I’m not saying this is the case with the OP’s situation, but sometimes it’s the person reaching out for help and understanding.

Sometimes the sufferer needs to go a bit further in their treatment to realize they need to keep that shit to themselves and not blast it out everywhere. If they are early in their diagnosis they might not actually have the capacity to deal with it as most of us in a “sane” mind would.

However, I will say that everyone and their dog is being diagnosed with bi polar — seems to be the new trendy mental illness. Docs hand out lithium these days like they did prozac 10 years ago.

Shit, I even had a psychiatrist tell me *I* was probably bi polar a few years ago. Uhhh no dice, doc.

  7. OP fuck right off asshole… Its obvious you’ve got some serious mental/emotional issues going yourself. You’d be a lot better off dealing with your own anger about your own bullshit disability than worying about what is and isn’t a legitimate disability in others.

  8. Bipolar is a very serious issue. I was diagnosed about 6 months ago after years of being told I had depression. It is something that many will never understand, just like those of us with 2 working legs could never understand what it means to be without the use of our legs. The degree of the condition can vary greatly as well. There are several factors that play a part in it, including the COMBINATION of medication and cognitive behavioural therapy. Without both it is hard to treat it properly. I have been told that it would be better for me to be on disability, but for me that would make it worse as I need to feel productive in order to feel good about myself.

Nova Scotia does not have a great track record when it comes to dealing with mental health issues within the province, and it is hard to get the care that is needed with a condition like this. When it comes to any mental illness people need to understand that just because you can’t see the suffering does not mean it doesn’t exist.

I don’t know if the person the OP is speaking about is playing their condition or not, but in serious cases BP can definatly make getting an education harder. I don’t feel the need to go into a list of symptoms here, but look it up, you will see what it does to the brain. I don’t think it should be used as an excuse though. That being said, why is it any of your fucking business if the person is failing or not, missing classes or not?? If the person is telling others about their condition, again, their business not your’s. Work on getting your own education (since you say it’s a challenge for you as well) and leave others alone.

  9. What is CP (Cancer of the Penis!?)? I prefer the people who try to keep this sort of thing personal, to those who use stuff like this (depression, bad childhood, etc) as an excuse to slide through life with ease. I don’t know much about being bipolar but know lots of people who claim to be depressed and in my opinion overmedicate.

  10. In my experience, people who actually suffer from this type of thing (emotional/mental problems) don’t brag about it because they are ashamed of it. One of my friends in high school was depressed for two years before anyone found out, and that was only because he attempted suicide. Even after that when he got help and everyone knew, he’d act normal as possible around us, pretended it never happened.

But don’t assume BP is bullshit just because one person is milking the attention and reaping the disability benefits. You probably know a few more people who are bipolar but haven’t told anyone and haven’t accepted financial help for the same reasons as you. Or maybe this whole attention seeking thing is part of this persons problem. Or maybe they are bipolar and just happen to be an immature attention whoring asshole as well.

    But I do think that it’s over-diagnosed…

  11. Bipolar disorder is significant mental health problem which can crush lives and familes, just because you do not see a disablity does not mean it doesn’t exist…and frankly just because this person has a disabiltiy does not mean that can’t be an asshole

  12. Wow! I’ve known a few people who had this disorder..

(whether or not this person is lying is another issue)
but to get money off of their tuition I assume that they had an extensive medical examination and probably many issues that resulted from this disorder that contributed to their disability.

From what I’ve heard from my friends this disorder results in: severe hallucinations, paranoia, crippling depression to the point of not being able to get out of bed, extreme mania to the point of being delirious with laughter that can’t stop no matter how hard you try, compulsive behavior, inability to concentrate and the ability to be agitated to the point of breaking MOST of your relationships, rage, a variety of other disorders LINKED to this…. such as eating disorders, BDD, anxiety and schizophrenia/ related symptoms

FUCK all people who think that mental disorders are somehow LESS than other disorders..

MENTAL ILLNESS IS REAL AND ONLY THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN IN THEIR POSITION CAN EVER TRULY UNDERSTAND

I’m a borderline personality, which is similar.. and I can relate 100% to this person.

I AM GLAD THAT SOMEONE GAVE THEM THIS MONEY
AND THAT (SOME) PEOPLE ARE FINALLY RECOGNIZING BPD FOR WHAT IT IS – A SERIOUS & DEBILITATING ILLNESS
