I have discussed this issue before in another context but the answer is the same: It’s called “the reality of evil.” Currently, evil is seen as simply the absence of the good but this mistaken notion, which goes back to the early Christian era, has been overtaken by events. There are evil people out there, those who consciously wish to bring harm, even death, to other people. It’s as simple as that. Have a good day.

Nothing is wrong, as you seem to think. People have been like this forever, according to the histories that I have read. And so are you, given your suggested punishment. Like it or not, violence is here to stay.
I suggest that you embrace life as it is, not as you would have it. Any change would have to start with you, not others .. you’re a lot closer to those people than you prefer to imagine.
@Buddha. The opposite of love is not hate, it is apathy. How many indifferent persons could have intervened in the lives and actions of these young men prior to these events?
The number one cause of violent death on the planet is suicide. Apathy at its extreme. Violence is not here to stay, it is on a (per capita) decline and tolerance of violence is unlikely to be at the root of that reduction, nor is introspection.
Suggesting that nothing is wrong, that worse has and will be done, is a statement devoid of humanity and compassion. It is an attitude more harmful to society than expressions of anger and vengeance which at least imply passion and empathy, however misguided.
How is that gonna help?
