Over the last couple years a disturbing trend has unfurled of rents skyrocketing. What the fuck is this? I can’t afford this shit; and it has gotten so out of hand I am taking the time to learn how to build a ship for the ocean; because that is cheaper than paying $600+ for a shit-hole apartment that I could have gotten for $450 five years ago! Not to mention utilities!!! Fuck man; what city do you people think you are renting to? Our population is diving, there is no money here, the rich run off credit; and rent just keeps going up and up…Don’t even get me started about food prices… —Lunatic Fringe

Oceanchick, you are right about nobody caring for all us proletariats. Problem is, it doesn’t extend to the bourgeoisie. People give way to much respect to people well off. Never thinking about the different variables of how people get to where they are in life. I work very hard but make no money. If my parents were rich, then i’d be rich, which in turn would make me more “successful”.
The rent went up through the roof when the ship contract was signed. You know, the ships that we needed built here so bad that the taxpayers gave the multimillion dollar company Irving, three hundred million. Not to mention the money we threw away with the whole “ships start here” nonsense.
Most of us will never be rich and I think we all understand that. The problem is with the difficulty in breaking in to the middle-class. Nobody should begrudge someone who works hard, becomes successful, and is able to afford a home to live in comfort. The problem is with property owners and those who own means of production — they are, for all intents and purposes, feudal lords, who control peoples lives and the standard of living for large segments of the population. Halifax is in desperate need of rent control and a more favourable opinion of unions. And, no, I’m not a socialist.
Simple solution:
Suck it up.
Whining does not qualify as a downpayment.
Get a second or even third job, like I did, post divorce.
I was delivering newspapers on the side (1am-5:30 am, 7 days/wk.), and washing garbage trucks on weekends @ 46 yrs. old before starting my ‘professional’ job @ 7:00am M-F, just to rebuild.
Save your money (again), like I did.
Buy a property (again), like I did.
Pay it off, like I did.
No mortgage payment, no second or third job necessary anymore.
Hard work and discipline………..not bellyaching, will solve your problem.
The time you spent writing this bitch would have been put to better use applying for those additional jobs (they ARE out there), and taking care of your own problems.
You, and only you control your destiny.

The further you go out of town, the cheaper the rents. Try some areas that are on bus routes if you don’t have a vehicle.
I feel for you OB. But then there is the flip side…for people renting their houses out while away, like me. If the market wasn’t absolutely shit, thanks to the artificial inflating of value of homes in NS thanks to the shipbuilding contract, I would have sold. But I couldn’t sell my house before moving to a new position. we chose to rent it out. A fair market value for my home to rent it out is 1400. my mortgage is 1100. I am renting my house out for 1200 because the property management firm said no one right now will be able to pay fair market price, and my property management fees are 130/month. so for the next 3 years, at minimum, im losing money.
Reality man, I agree with you 100%. three jobs to pay my own way through post secondary(im not a minority or a female and my parents were gov workers so couldn’t qualify for student loans or bursaries at the time) then bought a car with cash, and bought my first house as well. You are the pull up your socks and grind kind of guy, like me. Much respect.
Don’t blame the landlords for rent prices. Blame economics. Rents are based on supply and demand. If any of us suddenly inherited a rental property we would charge the going rate for that neighbourhood. I’d doubt that any of us would offer it at a steep discount just to be nice to some stranger. So, you have to live in an area where the going rates are what you can afford and/or find a way to increase your income so you can afford more rent.
Sorry to be blunt, but if you can’t afford $600 but are ok with $450, then get a roommate.

We have LESS poverty than most cities, not more, so “there is no money here” is also untrue.
