Kinda hard to believe but after living here for a while, I must say, What the fuck is wrong with you people?! What the hell is wrong with this province? Is it something in the water? Something in the food? I’ve been to several places around Canada and the world and this is by far the most unfriendly place on earth.
Do you people wake up with a straw in your mouth to a cup of fresh liquid McNasty?
The sad thing about it is I actually heard this from so many people who visited here. That’s pretty sad.
I’ve also never seen so much hatred in one place!!!
Why do people hate everything here?!

Most of my friends are not from around here which is sad, all are international except for 1.
What’s with the rudeness and self entitlement?!
How do people live here?! When I travel I don’t tell people I live in Nova Scotia because there are so many bad things I’ve heard about NS from outsiders. It’s embarrassing!
What’s even sadder is I have friends visiting in the summer and I can’t take them anywhere. All they do is go out drinking because there’s nothing else to do!
I ask people what do they do in the summer, this is the answer I get: “We go out drinking to the cottage, we’re drunk most of the summer”. Doesn’t anyone see anything wrong with that?! And somehow everyone is a fucking photographer or artist of some sort. —Get Off the Crack Pipe NS!

  1. We’re not unfriendly to decent people. Just dicks who bitch and moan about every fucking thing.

Go home dick, if you dislike it here. it’s not like we’re asking you to stay.

  2. I wish I had a ‘home I could go back to’ because the OP is correct. It does suck here. More on that later.

  3. People are generally nice to me. Because OH HAY I’m generally nice to them.

That doesn’t apply to today, though. Today I could cut a bitch.

… which is why I’m staying inside and not spreading my miserableness in public.

  4. I know what you mean OP, cause when I go back home to Ontario no one goes to their cottage to drink for the weekend… yeah right! I call bullshit on this troll of a bitch.

  5. I agree Halifax is a bit overrated but it is a city after all. Smaller towns and rural areas tend to be more friendly. That said try Ottawa, Toronto, Calgary, etc before complaining about how unfriendly halifax is.

  6. Don’t let the door hit your ass on the way out. Oh and by the way I’m from here an I would rather you not tell people your from here either, Dick…….

  7. Hmmm.. perfect strangers stopping to help me with my car… more help moving than I can shake a stick at… ten perfect strangers saying hello and good morning on a nearly daily basis… random men telling me how pretty I look even if I don’t…. smiles from nearly everyone… a Bitching Club who were about to take up a collection for me when I was down on my luck… An actual conversation with the lady at Access Nova Scotia…

Yeah… sometimes Hali thinks it’s too big for it’s britches…. and Dartmouth wants to be Compton… but I have never met so many nice people… I love it here and I’m not going anywhere. The East Coasters do not suffer fools lightly… if you’re a dick… they will throw it right back at ya… so how do you treat people out here? Sorry you’re not liking it… a well travelled cosmopolitan such as yourself can surely find somewhere else to go… and please do

  8. …then mumbles some recycled “Borat” dialogue in fake Russian accent while telling table full of cougars he can get them “Good job in hospitality industry in Minsk”

  9. Olives stuff with feta, amirite?

BTW: I’m taking actual offense to the buttfucks who didn’t show yesterday. Buncha buttfucks!

  10. Feta? I thought it was ketamine. Hmmmmmm, so I don’t have an reasonable excuse for what happened on the ferry….Damn!

  11. im originally from ontario, lived here now for 5 years and i love it here. i deal with the public as well, and the ppl i encounter on a daily basis are the most pleasant ppl ive ever met. so i guess moral of the story, you get back what you give!!

  12. “I wish more of the immigrants read this. Might convince them they are not welcome here.”

Kinda proves the OP’s point doesn’t it?!

  13. C’mon folks, do you not read the stories in The Coast? Sure, some of the people around here are ok, but for the most part we’re a backwater with the lowest common denominator being pretty damn low. Our ‘city’ is an oversized town. Let’s be real here, ok? Check out Noctorurne at Night, I think it is the ONLY time I am downtown and think ‘wow, this place sure is awesome’ and its one fucking night out of 365.

  14. “I wish more of the immigrants read this. Might convince them they are not welcome here.”

If the OP is wrong and needs to leave, can someone explain to me how none of you responded to this comment written by sebastian?
Is this the friendliness you guys have been bragging about?

  15. I’ve lost track of how many ‘nice’ people I encounter on my way to work, oh wait, its because I’m on a bicycle. nevermind. Check out our inept City Hall if you want examples of how awesome this place is. Barrington St. smells like pee and hollis st is rampant with rats as big as racoons.

  16. Oh I see, now everyone is on the defensive.

What if I tell you this is the general attitude in NS?
There are good people out there, but mainly overshadowed by that mentality!
There are good and bad people everywhere, but we’re mainly concered in where we live.
Anyway cares to elaborate on sebastian’s representation of NS?!

  17. isosceles_kramer, I guess the OP is a dick for having an opinion that’s different from yours?
Based on his experience and the way he/she has been treated, doesn’t mean that they’re wrong. They could have come from a place much friendlier than here!
I have friends and relatives who don’t live here and they all say the same thing, the girls here are stuck up to no end, more than anywhere else they’ve visited, you can’t tell me they’re all dicks and wrong?!

  18. @Randomness – responding to specific douchebaggery from Sebastabitch is like going to Moncton in the summer and complaining about the flies. You want to have a go at him, fill your boots. He’s like the Schmoo from Li’l Abner; he exists solely so that someone having a shitty day can heave a kick at him and feel a little better.
Overdo it and it stops being effective.

  19. All of your friends and family are probably pieces of shit Randomness. Y’all stick together. The girls here are stuck up? Nope. Sounds like they are making excuses for you not being able to find a girlfriend.

  20. You gotta stop hanging around with photograpers and artists. Shit lived here most of my life and I don’t know anyone in either of those occupations (?).

  21. I tend to agree, people here walk around in their own little worlds, only responding to situations that directly need their attention. I find especially in downtown Halifax people are snobbish and in a hurry to get nowhere in the fastest possible time, kinda beats the fun out of a “vibrant” downtown area.

I’m not saying there are no friendly people out there, I’m just saying as the years pass, I do notice a distinct decline in politeness. People letting doors go in the faces of other people, butting in lines, being rude to service people, road rage, robberies, swarmings, hookers, transients, drug dealers, and that’s just on Spring Garden Rd. We are just another cesspool city, just like the rest of them, not particularly friendly, not exceptionally rude, just another small-town that grew too big too fast.

  22. Randomness, you’ve outed yourself as the OP. It has nothing to do with opinions being different from other opinions. It’s a question of logic. This post smacks of a bad attitude of someone who looks down on this city. What do *they* expect is going to happen? You can’t walk around with a frown and expect people to cater to making your experience better. That’s not how real life works. Anywhere.

as for sebastian, you’re supposed to ignore him! Everybody knows that.

  23. Jesus, no one is forcing you to “go out to the cabin and get drunk.” What do you expect, Disneyland? I found lots of things to do over the summer…obviously not as much to do as if I lived in say, NYC……..which I don’t.

  24. We have a councillor that spearheaded a ‘lets cancel the bike lanes campaign’ and tweens had a booth set up in front of the community sobeys gathering petitions to keep car lanes and not build bike lanes. How Nova Scotia is that?

  25. When I moved to Hali last spring, I found people to be very friendly. Reserved, maybe, but I’m used to that.

  26. People in NS, esp halifax are conservative as fuck — don’t let the federal political representation fool ya.

I just find that when you’re nice to others, they tend to be nice back, but you’ll encounter douchebags everywhere. LIke the guy in the grocery store tonight that cut my dad off with his cart and almost smashed into him. Dad gave him a dirty “you’re a fucking asshat” look and the guy was all “DO WE HAVE A PROBLEM HERE?” (you could tell he was the type of douche that says shit and doesn’t expect anyone to stand up to him) so my dad said “no, but we can if you want to” and the guy just slinked away all sheepishly. So yeah, you’ll get douchehats everywhere.

But the nice thing still stands. When I lived in Ottawa, everyone but my boss’s boss who would constantly trash the maritimes, I found, were VERY friendly. Same when I’ve ever visited Toronto. I walked into Holt Renfrew in June with my lulus on, fucked up hair in a messy kind-ponytail, all grungy-looking from just going for a jog in the gross humidity, and the lady at the clinique counter and I had a great conversation. She was so friendly and even gave me a bunch of free samples with my purchase.

They fall all over me too when I go into Mills (HR is upscale like Mills for those not familiar).

Because… wait for it… I’m NICE TO OTHER PEOPLE.

Maybe you’re a douche canoe to others, OB. Or maybe you have a chip on your shoulder? Either way, people treat you the way you treat them, for the most part.

If it’s EVERYONE, maybe you should take a good long look at yo’ self.

  27. We need examples OP. It’s one thing to whine about perceived generalities but give me a couple of examples what you mean and why this province is so bad to you.

  28. I find the level of friendliness among customers in a store to be quite high.

But, I find the level of friendliness on the roads to be mediocre. I’ve seen more driver cooperation in Calgary or Toronto, and that is not saying much.

  29. What the hell else is there to do in Halifax besides drink and do other drugs? No one’s forcing you to get drunk but don’t act like some straight edge bitch with X’s drawn on your hands.

Sometimes when people get jumped they deserve it (grabbed a girl’s ass), get robbed when they deserve it (stole somebody’s coke), and get yelled at because they deserve it (driving below speed limit).

  30. don’t like it here fucklips, then you can move the fuck away, tata, hasta la vista, bye, don’t let door hit you in ass while going, so long, what ele is there to say?

  31. But, we still have Mayor Kelly and the 23 Zombies; as Lewis Black says – how fucking dumb is that!

  32. Because your friends do nothing but drink all summer and because they are losers – you’ll paint a million people with the same brush? lol. Who is the loser OB lol. Get some new friends

  33. All I see here is a typical Halifax attitude… “if you don’t like it here… leave”. As a city, if we cannot take a little constructive criticism from someone who is not originally from here, we will never reach our full potential. This attitude reaches from our people, to our city council, to our provincial government, and over the last 20 years of living here it baffles me how backward the thinking of this city is. Nobody wants to see any change here, “that’s the way it’s been for 100 years and that’s the way it’s gonna stay” seems to be the mantra for everyone involved in anything that could be considered a minute change for the better.

  34. As a lifelong resident here (unfortunately) I agree completely harper… but one’s instinct for change cannot change 98% of the ignoramuses who would rather see the population dwindle and get older, who want unobstructed views of the sky from wherever they are in the city, and for those who think 6 lane streets are still a good idea.

  35. IK, the way you suss these posters out is amazing (Random = OP, Work ethic is same bitch from last week who was really the gf) Are you a P.I.?

  36. STEPHEN HARPER IS THE DEVIL, Thanks. Someone that actually sees it in the same manner.

Regarding the rest of the nasty comments in reply to my opinion on here in response to the OP, yes I’ll be more than happy to give you examples.
I’ve been called terrorist in Halifax on several occassions. I’ve been called sand niger, I’ve been declined service at a couple of restaurants (I entered with a blonde girl from here with her child in hand for lunch).
Some of these comments came from people who I worked with 3-4 years.
Yes go ahead and judge and jump to conclusions, you’re probably trying to find excuses and reasons rather than actually facing reality and actually fixing things!
I can tell you one thing, and you either choose to believe it or turn a blind eye. One of the reason why people feel the way OP feels is because, and this is based on my experience, NS is by far the most racist place I’ve lived in and visited. More than the US, and we claim to be better. I’ve never had issues going through an airport in the US, Toronto, Montreal, Edmonton, Vancouver, yet I always get pulled aside out of the crowd in Halifax. Says something doesn’t it. Sad thing about it they mention things like this on the news yet 95% of the population here chooses to just ignore it and not actually change it, hence the mentality remains. It’s been like this since God knows when, I’ve only lived here for 17 years!
What I love the most is how most of the population’s lives here is controlled by what they see on TV.

If you all claim to be so open-minded and knowledgable, can anyone here tell me how life is in other area, say Dubai or Abu-Dhabi, or Lebanon, or Kuwait, or Jordan, or Egypt , or Turkey, or South America (Brazil & Argentina), or Central America (Costa Rica)? I know most haven’t visited any of those places but I’d like to hear about some of the opinions and ideas you may have about any of these places, as I’ve talked to people originally from here who think that life outside of NS is murderous and constricting!
I wouldn’t think much of it if it was only a handful of people, but when it’s more than 65% of the people I met throughout my residency here of 17 years, I wouldn’t think this is normal!

  37. I have been in Halifax for 3 months and i come from Europe, i met a really nice bunch of people here and even make a good friend in just 3 months! I did lots of stuff outside halifax in the province (included drinking lol but yours bars and restau downtown arereally nice!) i went to lots of festival and the first day i arrived here it was Metallica concert!
i think you re a bit grumpy today and overreact!
Cause, men, go live in the suburb of some big city and you cain complain!

  38. I think it depends on a lot of things.

Canned – I found the people my age in Ottawa to be WAAAAYYYY friendlier than the ones here. I’m talking night club patrons. They kept telling me how much they lover Maritimers and how friendly we are and I’m like “trust me you guys are way friendlier”

The only people who can afford to go out around here seem to be criminals or foreign students.

FS – I have found the young ladies here to be more more frigid and stuck up than other places I’ve visited. The men there are also much classier in general, I think that has something to do with it. People seem to have such walls up.

Every place has its pro’s and con’s I feel like Halifax is an older person’s city. Growing up/being young here if your not a student can be really frustrating.

PK – I’m hanging my head in shame for not showing my face at the summit.. I hope you’ll forgive me.

  39. People are surface friendly. Truth. You know, the fake smiles where only your lips smile. Hardly ever hear anyone laughing from the heart and life in general is so quiet here. No one yells and screams and talks loudly in the street. It makes my heart sad some times. Eh whatevs.

  40. I’m sorry to hear about the racist attitudes you’ve encountered Randomness. I like to think that we’ve gotten past all that but, apparently, that’s not the case. There’s absolutely no excuse for being treated like that. Being white, it’s hard to understand what others have to deal with. The unfettered stupidity.
Being declined service in a restaurant because you arrived with a white woman? Sounds like the 1950s Mississippi.

  41. “more than 65% of the people I met throughout my residency here of 17 years”
damn, you must keep detailed records.
Randomness… I always get shit in the airport too… always. every flight in the last 7 years has my shit rummaged through and me answering questions. Last trip I took, I was questioned at the passport desk, then by an officer, then again as they checked everything in my bags. It happens. It may in part be how you look, though I find they specifically target males traveling alone and throw a few women with a shit-ton of luggage in as well.

I’m not going to say there aren’t racist people here…
hell, I can barely stand the way some of my older family members talk half the time.
just don’t be so eager to throw the race card at everyone.

And perhaps your colleagues call you names just because you’re a fucking dick…

and Tommy, don’t sweat it. I bailed as well. I’ve been nonstop for over a week and needed one afternoon of chill time… life happens. there will be more.

  42. troodon. Thanks.
You don’t have to appologize, it’s not your fault nor is it anyone’s on here.
I just don’t like the attitude that most people here take, ignore it and it will eventually go away. Racism here is rampant regardless if people ignore it or not.
A lot of days it feels exactly like 1950’s Mississippi.

Donk Quixote on Space Mountain, I believe that’s what the OP was trying to say and I agree with you on that point.

tommyjules902, I found the same in Montreal, Toronto, Victoria and Florida. Regarding the women and people in general.

All I heard here is how horrible Toronto and Montreal are, until I actually visited. I have no idea why most people here think so ill of other cities in Canada.

  43. zZz proves my point exactly. Typical!
No difference between you and Sebastian.

By the way, so you know mr. ignorant, the name calling started after Sept 11 2001, and I’m middle eastern. I guess that makes me a dick to you huh?!
All of a sudden after Sept 11, I became a terrorist and a dick and a sand nigger. Never heard these things before then. But all of a sudden I became a dick huh?!

  44. i have lived all over this country and have never encountered blatant and veiled racism til we moved here. i try to avoid the ignorance, but when you start a conversation with “i wouldn’t mind the blanks if they weren’t so blankity blank. that’s when i scream and book it

  45. I’ve been to Dubai and Turkey before. Generally speaking, I found people from both cultures to be extremely polite, courteous and friendly, but cautious at the same time…Almost like there was a bit of a guard up. Understandable, I suppose, as they don’t know who I am other than a caucasion male. Personally I think it is an older, cultural thing where relations with strangers remain more formal than those say, with closer aquaintances/colleagues, much like our western culture, although I think a complete stranger is more apt to strike up an impromptu conversation with you over here than over there. However, I DO know that in Dubai, unless you are born there, you cannot become a full citizen, only a resident, and thus you cannot vote, you cannot obtain a passport/driver’s license, you cannot own a business, (you CAN run/manage one). Also, it was only in 2003 that they allowed foreigners to own property, provided they have the proper resident visas/paperwork. The immigration rules are slightly different for each of the 7 Emirate states so there are both federal UAE laws as well as individual state laws. They are constantly changing as well. It all seems very convoluted and overly complex to me. http://www.iicuae.com/externals/altamimi/i…
If you are an Israeli citizen or even have an Israeli stamp in your passport, you are denied entry into the country.
I do know that the majority of the labourers who were employed there were Pakistani or Indian and were treated like absolute shit. (At least, the ones I observed) Very much a class system.
So, in this case anyway, some could argue that it’s all a form of racism (i.e. you can’t become a citizen unless you are born there or you cannot enter the country if you are from Israel.) while others would argue it’s just a nation’s tight immigration laws. It’s all open to interpretation based on what you observe and your personal experiences. I would argue that the same holds true here.

  46. if you think I’m typical then you have the blinders on bud.

    and I said, PERHAPS it’s because you’re a dick.
I don’t know you or claim to know you…. but I know if you’re an asshole to people you see every day, then they’re going to form the opinion that…. *GHASP* you’re an ASSHOLE.
Sure they’re out of line calling you those specific names but if you piss people off enough, the gloves come off.

You seem to like jumping all over people at the drop of a hat if they say or even propose one little thing that you don’t agree with.
so yes, my new opinion is that you are a dick…
and you likely deserve how people treat you because you seem to provoke it regardless of setting or happenstance.

I have pursian/iranian friends and just hired a smart dude from Pakistan.
    I’m not racist… I’m anti-stupidity.

  47. Sebastian the faggot’s post doesn’t get deleted but mine does? Fuck you, bleeding cunt liberal and fuck you too, mods. It’s okay to discriminate against immigrants but saying faggots aren’t welcome here is wrong.

Fuck this board is getting mighty lame. Must be “I Love Faggot Week”.

  48. ^
Why they hell would you continue to put up with someone shitting in your house like this?

I begin to suspect he has actually threatened Coast staff with violence and that is why you have not banned him?

    It just makes no sense.
