I applied for disability. Because I have a disability. I am manic depressive and have a heart problem. I have worked and worked and worked. I have 2 jobs that make up full time hours and I still can’t get ahead.
Under doctors orders, she advised me to go on disability for the summer months. The heat puts my heart in overdrive, so to avoid (another) stroke – I had one when I was 22(!), she advised I take the summer off. So I get the papers and put in my notice to my jobs. And I am denied help from the government my (and yours, and your sisters, and my mothers…) tax dollars pay into. I went to EI, I worked 40 hours a week for more than a decade, and I still didn’t make enough to qualify for EI.
So the people who lie and say they are injured when they aren’t, or say they don’t know the father of their child when they do, and he is helping financially, or say they pay more rent when they do, get all kinds of money handed to them, I know it’s barely enough to live on, but I will be moving back in with my parents and I will only pay 200 to them and the power bill. why do the liars get the help they don’t need when I (and many others) get to suffer in silence? —Tired of it

While I agree that the system needs an overhaul, manic depression isn’t covered by disability, nor is a pre-existing condition like a stroke, unless it’s left parts of your body paralyzed.
Hell, my wife had breast cancer when she was 24, and thanks to the idiot that did the reconstructive surgery it left her with significant muscle damage in her chest, leaving her unable to work in just about any environment that would require any amount of lifting. She had to fight to get it (letters from her GP, and 2 plastic surgeon that fixed the original surgeons work) for the short time that she needed it for, so that she could recover.
As for the EI, you can appeal the decision. Those decisions aren’t always set in stone. With the right wording from your doc, they might be able to swing at least some money your way. If not, I would suggest looking into any long term disability packages that your employers offer. Most employers offer such coverage, even to part-timers.
you know something o.p., this is partly why i work for myself. no one to bug me, ny own hours, although are quite many. not making some lazy fuck rich. and don’t have to fucking commute to go to work, just roll out of bed, grab coffeee, and here i am. and a lot of stress freeness to boot.
I would agree with Dr. Fever that you should try appealing the decision. I am no EI expert but if you had worked full time full year, you should more than qualify for EI given that you didn’t get fired for wrongdoing or quit on your own accord. Did they say that you didn’t pay enough amount? Or was it your decision to quit the job that disqualified you? But you had a medical reason (recommended by your doctor even) to do so, and from whatever I read online, it seems like you have a good cause for being able to receive EI.
On a side note, I respect you for having worked over a decade while living with manic depression. That really isn’t an easy thing to do, much harder than some may realize. My sister suffered a mild version of it and it was difficult for her to go on with daily living for sure. I hope you will find some government people who will listen to your case and help you out.
There’s no minimum amount you need to make to qualify for EI. There IS, however, a minimum amount of hours you need to work. The problem may be that your medical reason is that it is ‘too hot to work’?
The fact that you worked for a decade and didn’t qualify, makes absolutely no sense. You would obviously have enough hours to draw EI (910 in most cases for new claim). The problem is your reason for leaving. However I still don’t see why you would not be able to draw sickness benefits. Appeal the decision and if that doesn’t work try Disability- as long as your illness is classified as prolonged and severe then you should qualify for that. Good luck!
Excuses excuses excuses.
The hours is not the problem, there is def something more to the story! Did you quit without telling your employer you were sick, did you present a medical note? Appeal that shit.
*sorry, i think it got over edited, i put my notice to work, so according to EI: I quit. they won’t cover you if you quit or got fired. and getting the employers to file papers saying i was laid off, is a lie. i did attach a copy of the doctors request to go on leave. lucky for me, i was denied before they had the chance to replace me, and i was able to get my jobs back. i have probably double the hours i need to go on EI, but i technically quit.
