Winter Parking ban.
I hope Peter Kelly, Ken Reashor and the rest of the stooges feel ashamed of themselves over this. This winter parking ban is an absolute abomination of a bill to pass. Not only does it stink of a money grab by greedy government officials, it hits the peo

You’re kidding. IF you really don’t see the need to have your car OFF the road and out of the way of snow clearing machines, then you’re probably part of the problem. Most of us are trying to make ends meet, and if a tow bill or finding a place to park in your area will break you, maybe you need to reexamine your finances and whether you can AFFORD a vehicle. Having one is a privilege, and being a student/low invome etc etc doesn’t give special rights. ; Been a poor student, had to sell my car, hated not having it, but liked the extra cash and not having to worry about upkeep and costs. They tried having people move their cars off the road when snow was expected, no go many never bothered, but did they bitch when the streets were clogged and not cleared? you bet! Did they bitch if their car got towed? yep some did. Did they complain because they streets weren’t cleared fast enough? Because the plows had to wait for cars to get towed/moved? OF COURSE. Personally I have a driveway, and I resent it when I have to shovel an extra 20 feet of the road because some jerk didn’t move their car off the road , and the plow had to swerve out around it.So whats your solution OP? I’d love to hear it. Snow is a fact of life here. How do you propose that the city remove it safely, quickly and cost effectively?
“…if a tow bill or finding a place to park in your area will break you, maybe you need to reexamine your finances and whether you can AFFORD a vehicle. Having one is a privilege, and being a student/low invome etc etc doesn’t give special rights.”EXACTLY. I remember years ago in Halifax County there was ALWAYS a parking ban on the streets iirc. If you’re THAT low income maybe you should ditch the car in the first place.Have you ever SEEN a plow, OP? Remember the tv ads from back in the day? They’re no feather dusters! Not like they can go around cars on tight streets (or most streets)…you’d probably bitch even louder if your street wasn’t plowed or properly plowed and you couldn’t dig your piece of shit car out of the snow bank…because even if the plow DID go around your car I can guarantee it’d be harder to shovel your car out of the street than your driveway.
ROFL someone didn’t move their car. I bet it was you.
if you can’t afford to pay the ticket you should either rent a parking space or sell your carsuck it up
Let’s look at the parking ban. The ban has been in effect in years past. The ban use to state that vehicles could not be parked on the road ways when a storm/snow was expected. Did people still park on the streets when it was snowing? YES! Did people not move their cars for hours/days after snow fall so it was hard for ploughs and other drivers to navigate the streets? YES! Do people who park on the street during a storm/regular snow which in the end affects all other people on the street care about their neighbors or other motorists? NOPE!The new ban states no parking on the street at night. Ok, tell me this… for the people complaining about the ban… where do you park your car when it is going to snow? Are you one of the inconsiderate jerk’s who leaves their car on the side of the road and says ‘well I can’t afford to purchase a parking space… so I’m just going to be a huge inconvenience for everyone’?It is a fact of life. People have to learn to adapt to their settings and surroundings. Therefore adapt! Adapt to the new parking ban. Get a parking spot… Sell your car… I don’t really care what you do in that sense… just don’t park on the F$@#ING Road! I agree, if it was up to me the ticket for violating the parking ban would be a hell of a lot more than $25.00. People would learn then not to park on the street overnight.P.S. I am a poor, starving student… who has a car… who pays for parking in her monthly budget thank you very much! I follow the rules! I get really annoyed when Inglis street is cut in half because A$$HOLES are parked on the road during/after snow fall and the ploughs cannot clear the street properly.
OMFG – at least we live in a city where they don’t have to call in the F’ing ARMY to clear the snow because of all the cars parked illegally on the side of the roads during a snowstorm.Maybe Peter Kelly should call Mel Lastman and start asking questions of how better to handle a parking ban and morons who don’t listen to it.
No, instead we live in a city where all cars are tagged and towed whether there’s need to plow the streets or not. It’s just a money grab, not a reasonable solution to winter snow removal. You’d think we’re new at this or something. Geesh
I sometimes think people forget CANADIANS built the road. CANADIANS OWN THE ROAD. Who gave these clowns the power to charge us for using it? There’s a reason private and toll roads are not popular in Canada and this is it. Look, I pay a gas tax, tax on my car when I buy it, tax on everything I need to maintain it, I pay extra for the right to drive it now you fucks think I should have to pay more to park it on a city street. Hello?!? Anybody home?
noone is charging anyone to park on a street. Did you even think this thru Kay?The charge is a FINE. Don’t want a fine/tow charge? MOVE YOUR DAMN CAR OFF THE ROAD ; They tried telling people to please move their cars. People were not able to be responsible and move their cars. The streets could not be cleared. Th eonly fucks here are those who want to fuck it up for everyone else who is responsible and condsiderate enough to move their cars out of the way.
ElvisQ, you’re obviously unaffected by this parking ban so I don’t understand how you expect your view to be of any value here. $25 fine + $100 (if you’re also towed, which is mandated) amounts to a big ‘fuck you’ HRM tax payer. I posted this in other threads. Chew on it for a while and then ask yourself if YOU’VE thought this through….Being the ONLY city in North America (src CBC evening news 17-Dec) to have a steady and total winter parking ban in place and an enforcer looking to ticket and tow your car on a snow-free day (day 1 of the ban – no snow, lots of tickets) who ASKS NOBODY and ANSWERS TO NOBODY says an awful lot about this DRACONIAN town! I wanna get a look at the guy in charge. I’ll bet he was born with the required driving mentality for his job in 19-fucking-50.This must be the same person who thought NOT to time the downtown traffic signals to ensure a no-stop pass through the downtown area while driving at the posted 50 km/hr (if you’re scratching your head consider yourself painfully Haligonian)This is right up there with the ‘brilliance’ employed in the “solution” to the “problem” with Cobequid Pass. Imagine what would happen in Central BC if the solution to the problems in having to steadily remove snow from well traveled highways with two or more fair-steep and long hills on them was to simply invest in a couple of signs and close the fucker… OMG!!!! Entirely unacceptable! FYI The snow plow and the city and the region knew the storm was coming well in advance yet nobody saw a snowplow until at least a foot of snow covered the highway and then there were only a couple of plows working and not together… and WE PAY these people with our tax dollars to hold the position of management that would see our highways open, not closed!Halifax is NOT exceptional in North America when it comes to snow on highways yet has the most driver / tax-payer unfriendly policy in the whole of the land. What is wrong with you people? Fuck you HRM. GROW UP!
Actually Kay, the information you heard on CBC was incorrect. Many, many North American cities and towns imply full winter parking bans, most notably, Chicago. Kitchener, Ontario also has a full ban, as does St. Paul, Minesota, and Burlington, Vermont. Plus too many other smaller cities and towns to mention. As it’s been stated on many other threads, if you can afford a car, along with all it’s maitenance, insurance, and gas, you should be able to afford to rent a parking spot from December to April.
What happens when it snows, like most times, during the day? A day parking ban maybe?!To most of the people complaining about streets cut in half, the same was on Barrington streets where you couldn’t park anyway. The light that turns into Dartmouth and Robie from bedford highway. That whole section was down to 1 lane. You can’t park there anytime, what was their reason for not plowing it then?! Not cars for sure!
Kay,You rant and rave about anything and everything! Obviously all you do is stand on this soap box and do nothing to fix the actual problems you apparently are facing. However for this debate, here are my thoughts on your arguments: You say:” Look, I pay a gas tax, tax on my car when I buy it, tax on everything I need to maintain it, I pay extra for the right to drive it now you fucks think I should have to pay more to park it on a city street.”I say:I also pay taxes, and I would like my taxes to pay to have the streets properly ploughed and managed when it snows. Therefore if it costs you more to find parking that is not my problem. Just because you are inconvenienced by this parking ban doesn’t mean that ALL OTHER DRIVERS/COMMUTERS should be inconvenienced. This is one debate where the ‘princess complex’ will not work. Either move to a place that has parking… or sell your car.Have a wonderful day 🙂

Why are people so surprised when they find nothing but bitches here. What do you expect, fucking flowers? Isn’t that what the pssst section is for. Whatever.
Right Kay; I have a driveway NOW, so my opinion is irrelevant. I’ve always had a driveway I was born with one, its my god given right you know. Sheesh. When I picked my latest Diggs a driveway was a requirement. Before this I was living in trees and clouds and certainly not in a DT apt. No I’m not living DT halifax now. ItsOne of the sacrifices i had to make because, quite honestly, I’d rather take a cab, then mess around with parking in DT,Halifax. If I do park down there , and my car gets ticket or towed, its my own damn fault. You can feel free to think that the city owes you more, maybe they should come by and shovel around your car just for you, even paint your spot the color of choice.I will agree that ticketing when there is no snow is a bit much, but you and others obviously aren’t getting the message. Hope you get towed.
