OK I lived here for over 30 years now, why the hell don’t we have a winter festival? What? We don’t get snow or something??? Everyone else across this frozen tundra has a winter type fest of some sort.

Look at the commons, I SAID LOOK AT IT!!!! It a waste land during the winter months, put an ice rink (or two) there, build a snow maze, have snow/ice sculpture competitions, a concert maybe? But NO!!!!

There is sweet fuck all to do outside here in a major city during the winter months. So throw us a bone (or a snowball for Christ’s sake!) and do something for the people of HRM!!!

We can only slide down Citadel so many time before someone says “OK I’ve had enough, lets go the fuck home.”

  1. I’d love for something like that to happen. There’s nothing worse that thinking “What’s on this weekend?”, then remebering that Halifax sucks in the winter and you’re stuck inside with repeats.

  2. I don’t think anyone would object if you went out and build an ice castle on the Common. Might be cool.

  3. ITDOW was a music festival. I think subby means for something more like what was mentioned; skating on the Commons etc.

  4. We’ll never match the fun of Quebec City’s Winter Festival (because they have a real Winter). I actually doubt that we would have a span of cold days long enough to support such a venture. Good idea though.

  5. I would love an ice/snow sculpture competition! And I’ve often thought that they should open the Public Gardens for a couple of days in the winter too, as special occasions, as they should during the summer at night. It would bring lots of people out to see the garens nice and lit up and snowy.

  6. They are opening the Public Gardens during the winter. It’s an experiment. I don’t remember the details that are on the fences of the gardens, I was in a rush to the hospital.

  7. You’ve lived here for thirty years? Did you never venture to Dartmouth in that space of time? There used to be a Dartmouth Winter Carnival at one time. Sure, it wasn’t the big city, but we did our best with what we had.

  8. I would LOVE an icerink on the commons.. i would tear that shit UP !!! (luckily i had a lake for that) Point is.. I’ve been asking myself EXACTLY the same thing 🙂

  9. I hate winter and anything to do with it, so I would hate a festival. But you crazy people, go right ahead. 😉

  10. I would love a winter festival…where would we have it…Hmmm Jamaica looks like a great place, but the Dominican Republic’s a little cheaper, or we could go to Cuba & show support for a regime that the American Government just can’t bring themselves to accept, OH we could go to oahu…that place is great one of the best places I’ve been, but it’s a long flight.

Well anyway I think the Idea is a good one we just need to pick a place with warm breezes, cold drinks & good food & I’m in.
“It’ll be nice to get out of this frozen hell hole we have to try to survive in’ 😉

  11. I agree with the original poster. Halifax lacks that romantic and fun Winter spirit (yes there is such a thing). As a former Haligonian living in Montreal, I witness happy, cold, active people here everyday (even the -30 ones).

Every park is decked with lights, small festivals (music, skating, tree lightings, etc).

Basically, it wouldn’t consume very many resources to have a Winter Festival, and it would brighten the season for sure.

Looking for an event planner, give me a call! 😉

PS – Dr. Fever’s attitude is what Halifax needs to ditch, asap.

  12. “I don’t think anyone would object if you went out and build an ice castle on the Common.”

Just make sure it’s no taller than 3 stories, fits with the local faux-Heritage architecture, doesn’t have features preferred by high-income earners, and is taxed at a higher rate than ice castles in outlying areas of the city.

  13. But, yes, bring on a Winter Carnival of some sort. February is a long and dreary month with no stat holidays, so anything to brighten it up a little and get families (instead of just wangsters) out in our public spaces. Great idea.
