Let’s list all the shit that has happened in the last 8-9? years
George W. Bush
911
Shuttle disaster
2 wars Afghansitan/Iraq plus a bunch of other small “skurmishes” (sp)
alcelerating climate change
Recession and or Depression
more of the same fro the last century in the way of poverty, disease, and just general fun…
will things get better ever?
I want my Star Trek utopia not this shit
—21st. Century Freakout
This article appears in May 28 – Jun 3, 2009.

This is only one side of the argument. I put forth the challenge to this century to come on this board and defend its actions!
Diversity is more widely accepted? lol
Look what the 21st century brought us!
Were you in the bathroom for the late 20th century or what?
well the late 20th sucked as well….but the first 8-9 years of this one are topping that
well the late 20th sucked as well….but the first 8-9 years of this one are topping that
Until I see flying cars, I’m gonna have to go with saying the 21st century is not living up to its promised potential.
I’m inclined to agree. Every day I read at least a couple stories on the news sites which make me wonder what the hell has happened to the world today.
Have you considered the terms micro, nano and cyber didn’t really exist before? Certainly not in the minds of common men. The terms cellular and net used to conjure images of smelly fleshy things. Have you considered we used to smoking in hospital waiting rooms, pack our food into aluminum cans and line our buildings with asbestos? We used to treat asthma with coffee and we just let you die if you were diabetic. It wasn’t that long ago, really. Just think, today’s kids imagination’s begin with all of this technology as “a given” and soon CERN’s particle accelerator is going to turn 20th century physics (and religion) right on it’s head. Star Trek is not far off.
Not to mention the music industry has gone to SHIT. I don’t know what has happened, but today’s [record label] musicians seem like they’re trying way to hard, and all they produce is this over hyped, emo/gay-pop/guyliner bullshit. I mean when Kiss wore makeup back in the day at least they kicked ass.
I know this doesn’t apply for most music but it sure feels like it somedays.
I want my hoverboard!
The world’s always had problems, now we just have different ones. However, for the most part, I’m inclined to agree with kay on this one.
The only constant is that 21st century politicans suck as much as 20th/19th/18th century ones – but Rodney the Mabou Moron might just eclipse the lot of them. The sooner he loses and is sent back to Cape Pogey the happier I’ll be…..
But I can’t fly in a nanocar or a microcar or a cybercar or a cellular car or a car net.
I want flying cars. But I’ll accept hovercars, repulsor lift cars land speeders, shuttle craft or transporters.
Let CERN do it’s work and finally discover gravity (unifying theory). $10 says we’re off the ground the same year.
2012 commin’ yeah doom
Well the 20th century was great wasn’t it, WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, 1st Gulf war, Cold War, and hundreds of smaller wars, Communism.
Don’t forget the birth of Kevin Federline…
K Fed is the harbinger of the apocalypse.
Kay Fed you hamburger what?
Bastard fish, I’m with you on your music comment. Another problem with the music world is that since it’s hitting the digital world, it is loosing all of it’s “personality”. I mean there is great stuff out there..don’t get me wrong, but how many new album’s are coming out that have an entire story told within all the track’s combined. Or have interesting fact’s about them..or..secret songs:(. It’s sad really.
FA if you enjoy narrative albums you might enjoy the new Decemberists album “Hazards of Love”, it’s one of my favorites at the moment.
You’ve formed your impression of the 21st century based on limited media exposure. Despite their claims to the contrary, the media is neither fair nor balanced, nor can it offer a comprehensive picture of reality.
Violence has been trending steadily down for centuries. Pinker writes: “The decline of violence is a fractal phenomenon, visible at the scale of millennia, centuries, decades, and years. It applies over several orders of magnitude of violence, from genocide to war to rioting to homicide to the treatment of children and animals. And it appears to be a worldwide trend, though not a homogeneous one. The leading edge has been in Western societies, especially England and Holland, and there seems to have been a tipping point at the onset of the Age of Reason in the early seventeenth century.”

A threadless t-shirt I have, which says it all…
http://www.threadless.com/submission/4094/…
There may have been some good things that have happened in the 21st century, but it’s all stuff that we need to fix things we’ve screwed up in the past.
sweet shirt!
This OP is just young and has no appreciation for the old ways. Kids these days expect digital technology to quickly fall to the bottom of the most-impressive-technologies-known-to-mankind list. To say it’s not happening fast enough is a decent perspective in a world where microwaves are “old school” and space shuttles are retired.
K FED? fucking awesome
“A threadless t-shirt I have, which says it all…
http://www.threadless.com/submission/4094/…”
My god, did you read the comments on that page? Most of the people don’t understand the meaning of the last line. : /
That shirt is freakin awesome.
OP, I was thinking the same exact thing last night…while I was playing checkers with my robot-partner.
Jesus H. on a Hang Glider – the 80s were farrrrrr worse – Reaganonics and his fucking goddamn trickle down theory that started this whole economic meltdown, lousy music, stupid trends and big hair. I’ll take the 21st c. any day.
LMAO at the term “guyliner”
Yeah, life in the 21st century is so tough… clean water, freedom, technological advances that allow us to make our environment better, need I go on? Let’s see, the 20th century had 2 world wars(~100 million people died in the conflicts, not to mention the genocide of the Jews) a full on war in Korea, a war in Vietnam, and probably the worst invention of all; the nuclear weapon. It may only be 9 years in but you know what? This isn’t so bad.
Miles the last thing we need are flying cars. There’s enough carnage on the roads let alone flying cars crashing in tall buildings.
Then again, Bro Tim, with the technology of flying cars there could also be some kind of opposite magnetized force field proctecting these ‘flying cars’ from colliding with each other and various objects (i.e. buildings, houses) outside of the roadways. Eh, eh?
Pardon my unintelligently formed sentences above. I just woke up.
I appreciate the hazards that might come with flying cars….but they are cars…that FLY. It’s just really cool.
I wanna be a Jetson.
FYI: That was a cartoon back in the day Dino 😉
Dino we could use the repulser technology now. And I saw Dino Meets The Jetsons LOL 🙂
LOL miles you sound like an adorable little kid — “Not just cars guys! Cars that FLY!!” I’ve always had a passionate envy for Mrs. Jetson…she was such a fox. Yes, I watched the Jetsons ALL the time when I was younger. Bro Tim — ah, repulser technology…there it is.
I’m willing to give this century a few more years before I write it off completely. After all, in the 20th century, we got:
Two world wars
AIDS
other shuttle disasters
Black Tuesday
The Great Depression
Nukes
Full House
Ebola Virus
BET
Don’t forget Madonna, and she’s not even done yet.
Madonna – the mere mention of that old trout’s name throws my gag reflex into overdrive.
wow… she’s only one of the most progressive, successful and humane performers on the planet. Sure takes a lot to please ol’ TTFN here. Maybe it’s time for a “Holiday”, huh? *wink*
Hahahaha Madonna = old trout. Love it.
And it’s pretty accurate too when you think about it.
Pfffftttt Madonna humane?? Please. She’s only humane if there is cash and PR involved. She’s probably one of the most self absorbed people around, hence why she is successful.
K, back to the task at hand: meh the 21st century is no worse than the 20th century and no better than the 22nd century will likely be. Where humans dwell there is always turmoil. Whatevs.
About Madonna.. do you really think the children she adopted are simply a PR thing? Working and walking with women in Africa, etc… She’s got the money and does some really good charitable work but that’s not good enough for you? What more do you want? “Whatevs” is right.
Wow…leave it to Kay to point out how ‘humane’ Madonna is. You’re getting more predictable by the second girl. Likewise what TTFN said– Madonna is the last thing from humane: think only quasi-humane. The crazy bitch thought she was pulling an Angelina and being a ‘good person’ by adopting that poor child. Anyone remember this? When the father desperately wanted his kid back, she clamped the thing under her soggy armpit and wouldn’t let go. Now she’s left her young children for an overtanned egotistical idiot. The lady’s fucked.
You’ve become quite predictable yourself Dino
Madonna ruined guy richie..nuf said.
Technological specs (computer speed, camera resolution, tvs, optical discs, etc, etc) are incresing exponentially. We’re not far from a technological singularity- then you get your Star Trek.
Madonna is a fucking moron. Yes, a very wealthy moron and it just goes to show that you don’t need to have brains to be a self-promoting whore. The fact she buys into that Kabullshit cult and hands over millions to them shows she’s a fucking dumbass. And let’s not forget the fact her talent wouldn’t fill a thimble. Or that she adopts kids as fashion accessories. Now she’s going out with a guy younger than her douche bag – the guy propbably sees dollar signs, all she wants to do is fuck baby Jesus. Poor guy must have to close his eyes and think of Brazil or whereever the hell he’s from. The older she gets, the more pathetic her act.
Let’s not forget that dumbass Tom Cruise and his Scientology shit and his moronic jumping on the couch routine.
80’s seem fun & nostalgic now but sure were a pain in the ass at the time. I agree that music today doesn’t seem to be getting any better.
Yeah f**kin’ Star Trek. Just what we need – a bunch of commies with phasers flying around messing with the prime directive. If you think people bitch about cyclists in this city wait until you have people beaming themselves wherever they please.
The thing that’s turned me from celebrities is the fact that most of them stretch their careers far too thin. I’d gripe less about them if they had an ounce of dignity to retire at a normal age like the rest of us, but instead they decide to make like mid life crisis soccer moms and desperately do anything to stay in the limelight. It’s disgusting. I have a lot of respect for Joaquin Phoenix though.
you also forgot, britney spears’ “comeback” and the birth of Lindsay Lohan(including her music and acting)
Star Trek world is more dystopia than anything. You could smell the fascism through the movie screen in the new flick.
Bastard Fish is correct.
Havin’ a look at Madonna’s young boyfriend… she ain’t doin’ so bad no matter how you cut it out of JEALOUS (TTFN).
