I’ve lived in lots of other places, and those of you tried and true to NS will probably tell me to go back there, but why is it so expensive to actually “live” in Nova Scotia?
Yes, house prices are reasonable compared to some places in other provinces, but really, that’s all it really has going for it price wise. We pay 15% tax, we have the most expensive universities (and no one who graduates usually stays here b/c jobs are mostly due to nepotism), and we just shut our mouths and pay pay pay…we pay more on our personal tax returns, we pay more in a lot of ways.
I love NS, I really do, but it’s too much, especially when all you hear about is politicians spending our tax dollars on their home entertainment systems. Even more frustrating are the amount of unemployed (by choice) individuals, who claim they want to work, but won’t work for minimum wage, who don’t help out… so frustrated and tired of paying so much to live where I love:( —I hate taxes in NS!

because we have had and havbe a bunch of crooks running and ruining this fucking province. that a good enough reason o.p.
It’s called greedy politicians. We should fire the lot of them and hire the Mafia. Afterall if you’re going to be raped and robbed, it should be done by a professional.
Actually it’s not the fault of politicians, even though that’s what you would like it to be. It’s due to a culture of “that will do” and absent get-up-off-your-butt-and-work-hard attitudes that got us where we are today. What you are learning op is that the successful and hard working in this province get it in the end, because we pay pay pay, while the lazy just get by and do just fine, thank you very much. Until we get some new people here (who don’t mind working hard) or change the people’s mindset here, I’m afraid that nothing is going to change. There are too few hard working guys paying taxes versus too many lazy, to make it work. Signed: works hard, pays lots of taxes, and has lived here all their life.
Go back to those other areas, OP. I’m not saying that as a “if you don’t like it stfu and gtfo” type of comment I’m saying this for your benefit. If I could gtfo out here, I would. On the next plane westwards (and no I’m not talking about kay-ville, either — anywhere west of NB’ll do).
This place is a cesspool of economic disparity, un and under employment, laziness and overall contempt for anything progressive (and all everyone ever does is bitch about EVERYTHING.)
It costs so much to live here b/c you touch yourself, OP.
I’m guessing that youve read “Backwater – Nova Scotia’s Economic Decline” by Peter Moreira – I’ve just finished it and agree with a lot that has been said in the book.
Commoner and PK make valid points.
Our slogan should be “We’re apathetic and too darned complacent to do anything about it, pass the transfer payments svp”.
You don’t have to pay the 15% HST if you buy online from the US. Often Customs doesn’t even charge duty. Things are cheaper down there even with shipping added in.
Because it is a shithole
because of students like you that fail to pay off their students loans and we, the tax payer, must pick up the slack…also,we live at the very outshirts of north america, thus products cost more to deliver and distribute…the nimby people are the ones to blame, for it is they who are against all development and revenue generating operations…when a place fails to progress, they will fail to exist
are you calling all of us Nova Scotians apathetic????
meh, whatever.
