The only semi-reasonable explanation I’ve heard for this is that they prepare the vaccine in batches and once mixed it only has a shelf life of 24hrs. If they prep some at the end of the day on a friday, it won’t last the weekend, so might as well give to the people you have access to (i.e. Family and friends).
I think’s it’s still a poor excuse, mind you.
You’re right about the 24 hr thing Miles, but most doctors’ offices have had no problems getting rid of vaccines, as they’re lined up out the doors with 6 mth – 5 yr old kids.
Actually, I read that this weekend’s clinics around capital health’s region were pretty quiet and wait times were very reasonable…
Maybe it’s time to start letting doctors vaccinate their high risk patients over 19? (those of us under 65 with chronic health conditions that require monitoring by a doctor on a regular basis)
The province totally pooched it by taking it away from the family docs to begin with.
The best system would have involved a combination of clinics and family practice types making it happen

That’s what pisses me off. I know people, who are not high risk nor live with anyone high risk and they got vaccinated somehow from they’re doctor. Now me, I have asthma, I have a 6 year old, I work with a bunch of 6 year olds in a school and I could not get vaccinated and now me and my 6 year old are at home for the week because we have H1N1. So does my grandmother and my best friend, who has worse asthma then me. And now she has complications. Fuck the doctors who are giving them out to people who don’t really need it. Fuck the 24 hour shelf live bullshit. They know who their patients are. Instead of vaccinating their healthy friends and family, they should be calling their patients who they know could get serious complications from H1N1 but cannot otherwise get vaccinated. Fucking fucked up shit.
Tamiflu in the first 24hrs. Call your doctor and get them to phone in the prescription.
virgo mom…look at the bright side, if you live (& you sound pissed off enough to survive on pure hate alone) you don’t have to get a shot…your own immunity system has done its job & your good to go ! Hopefully eveyone else gets well also, looking at the death count for regular flu & H1, world wide, you’ve got a better chance .

Were lucky, its a mild case. Which is why we weren’t prescribed tamiflu at the assessment center. You know what I saw at the assessment center? Every single age group who cannot get the shot. And a lot were bad. And yeah, ill live and not get the shot, but I miss a week of work and my kid a week of school. This whole swine flu bullshit is fucked up.
