Here we go again! The NS Government just gave POOR Irving Oil a $260 million forgiveable loan today to build ships they will make billions on constructing!!! They gave POOR Imperial Oil a $17 million property/assessment tax break earlier this year. The “Little Guy” gets it straight on the “chin” again! This is MADNESS! The Provincial Gov’t also just downloaded $100m of non-budgeted costs to HRM. Think the small business communities property taxes are not going up to make up this shortfall? Think again! I hope everyone remembers these small business blood sucking politicans when the next election rolls around!! We have small business owners in our area (Fall River and surrounding area) with 377% property tax increases (in the past 1 yr) and no help or relief provided to them! But, the politicians are giving hundreds of millions to Irving and millions in tax relief to Imperial Oil. Something wrong here!! Where is the fairness?? —MF

oh, that’s right… life is fair!!!
I must have forgot that.
this definitely reeks of pandering to the 1%.
I just find it funny that the majority of the “1%” aren’t even living, breathing people….
“Forgivable loan” is the new euphemism for “grant” or “gift” if that makes you feel any better.
I’m ok with forgiving you for having to take out a loan….
it’s when it becomes a forgettable loan that we have a problem.
What pisses me off is that the interest we pay on the entire 304 million will be payed for by us, not a multibillion dollar corporation who will likely stuff all of it’s profit in some offshore bank. We should have bid for that contract, it would have cost the same amount, and we would have gotten a facility to use after the contract was fulfilled. Are we even going to get 304 million back in tax benefits? We may as well have burned that money. Fuck you again Dexter!!!
It’s called economic development – ec•o•nom•ic de•vel•op•ment – also known as keeping YOU in welfare payments, so fuck off.
The only thing i disagree in this is “remember this at election time”. Do you really think any other party would do anything different?
my only suggestion o.p., is to run for a public office, and get some of the pork that is rolling around. either that, or sit back and take it, like the majority of the people are.
But Irving needs that money to pay for the $8/hr across the board raises that their shipyard employees are getting in the next two weeks…
Does anyone NOT regurgitate false facts and innuendo?
Do ANY of you have a mind and opinions of your own?
Ya dumb cunts!
do you have some variation in your cussing?
Any Company that’s just been awarded 30 billion dollars in contract work over the next 25/30 years is IMO entitled to a loan.
What it isn’t entitled to IMO is a loan I have to help pay for.
Let Irving pay the loan back in full .
My guess is that this deal was done long before any bids were put in for the shipbuilding project i.e. financial support from the provincial government as a prerequisite. I agree it stinks, one can only hope that the spinoffs from the 30 year project will compensate for this. If it’s any consolation $44 milion is to be paid back while $260 million is “forgivable”.
Fuck the bank! I’m going to see Dexter for a loan. Interest free. Because I have no interest of paying it back.
