What has happened to all the colourful, painted houses that made Halifax so unique? I used to love all the beautiful, interesting (and sometimes, wonderfully hideous) combinations of purple, teal, scarlet, green and canary yellow. Now, other than a handful of bright, cheerful houses, I mainly see the same beige, white, grey and anemic blues and yellows you can find anywhere else in Canada. Boring!
House painting season is now upon us, folks – I think it’s time to restore Halifax to its former, painted glory! —Tired of Beige & Vinyl
This article appears in Apr 19-25, 2012.

No, wait. Let me guess. “Biege and vinyl make you feel hollow?”
That’s not unique… have you ever been to downtown St. John’s, NL? They don’t call it “JellyBean Row” for nothing.
There’s still plenty of colorfully painted houses in the North End, you must be suffering from the onset of colour blindness.
sweet pf, hello. northern quebec has cheerful colours, as well
What she said. I had looked forward to viewing the ballyhooed colourful city houses and if my feet hadn’t hurt so much from walking, I might have felt all hollow inside as well. Maybe if the tourist literature hadn’t highlighted it, I would have appreciated the one neighborhood that displayed it, but I was expecting colourful- like Greenland or Martha’s Vineyard houses…
Two years ago, I pained my 2 storey colonial ‘buttercup yellow’. I am thinking of painting the (white) shutters and trim blue…bring on da colour!
Hi PG 🙂
Hmmmm….I dunno…..this whole bitch sounds suspiciously like it might be the work of some house painter trying to coax up new business for the spring.

True, Vastie. There’s a purple house on Thistle Street, check it out sometime OP. If this is all you have to bitch about I don’t feel too bad for you.
If that’s true, then well played, painter person! I LOVE the colour purple, too-in my front yard, the wisteria I planted around a 25′ ‘stump’ the city left behind is in bloom, as are the lilacs, grape hyacinth and forget me nots. When the lavender, hydrangea, purple bee balm, rose of sharon and Russian sage come up they will bloom all summer. Very purpley!
The outside of the house and the living room is yellow, though; I love the colour yellow, but as a ginger, I can’t wear it well (few people can).
My guess? We had a massive economy crash and white/bland paint is the cheapest. Boring is better than your shingles rotting off.
you should be glad thhat there aren’t more of thhese hideous looking fuckingg houses.some of them are so bright, that thhey are abn eyesore. if you want vivid colors, then go get some potent weed o.p.
I heard that beige and grey are the new purple, teal, scarlet, green and canary yellow. Seriously, maybe in this conservative economy, house owners don’t want to risk doing anything to bring the value of their down.
Those colors are tacky as hail… I like the new restorations
i’ve always wanted one of these on my house https://d27fcql9yjk2c0.cloudfront.net/asse…
