It’s not enough to look at the obvious credentials of your spokespeople, whether they’re pro- or anti- an issue or hold a prestigious degree. Today, you also have to consider the hidden motivations behind their recommendations. Where is their loyalty? Who pays for their lifestyle? Where is their money coming from?

  1. “Follow the money.” is always the best advice when trying to suss out a person’s motivation.

  2. I disagree. People need to stop being so cynical. Not everyone is for sale. “Follow the money” is a catchy phrase for conspiracy theorists. While it holds true in some cases, it can keep you from seeing a person’s real motivation too.

Take doctors as an example. People like to argue that they push certain prescription drugs because of the perks they get from the drug reps. For the most part, the doctor’s loyalty is to the patients. They push the particular drug because the rep is doing a good job advertising it and they don’t know of the alternative drug or potential negative side effects. There’s a problem here, but it’s not about money, it’s about doctor’s not doing their homework. You can’t solve the problem by stopping the flow of money, you have to change the flow of information.

“Follow the money” is just too simplistic. It applies well in business, OK in politics and less so in other regards.

  3. I agree…follow the money and the power…… since the doctor/drug example was brought up….pushing pills for profit is exactly what is going on and as soon as doctors become businessmen they should not be allowed to have patients.. WE are supposed to be protected by laws that disallow doctors from causing us injury but ……. again when we do not have regulators who monitor the use and abuse of drug usages amongst patients we see doctors playing God….the power and the money are just too enticing….

Human nature is weak and flawed and it takes remarkable people to have the power and money and not corrupt with it… and because of it….

WE all have agendas…some good some bad….sadly some are really good at playing good when they are bad…. and someone always gets hurt….

Was there a particular event that happened to spark this ?

There is a saying-when a man brings you home flowers for no reasons….there is a reason……

There is always an agenda….it is about being careful and safe not naive and gullible….Ignorance is bliss to those who want to be fooled…for those like yourself asking these serious questions makes you more intelligent than many others…it means you are paying attention

    Where ARE the morals?
