Even though it’s close to the 401, it’s not the sort of place that someone unfamiliar with the area would find by accident, unless they were a pleasure boater or had a historical interest in the Rideau canal.

  24. Official from Amnesty International has said the people that killed the dictator should be prosecuted. No respect for that organization anymore. Gaddafi apologists need to move to a dictatorship and then tell me how much sympathy they have for these leaders. Ship them off to Syria, Zimbabwe, Iran, North Korea, Sudan, etc.

    Ideally he would have been arrested and put in a police car and then put on trial. Ideally he wouldn’t have kidnapped, tortured, and murdered his people. Ideally he wouldn’t have given explosives, machine guns, and RPG’s to the IRA and other groups. Ideally he wouldn’t have ordered a civilian jet liner to be blown up.

    Revolutions and civil wars are bloody, and people oppressed by a dictator might just maybe have some hostility built up in them.

    My experience is that overwhelmingly they are the same as Christians/whatevers I know, just that the practical stuff likefadting and praying 5 times a day is more stringent than other religions.     The media loves to bring out the hysterical xenophobes with a good “honour killing” story. Lots of Western men use fucked up misogynistic attitudes to justify killing Western women too, but you’ll never see some sensational headline like “Man Kills Wife Because of Rampant Misogyny and Western Patriarchal Culture”. Certain Eastern European countries condone honour killings as well but, chances are, if a white European immigrant killed his wife and daughters, we’d probably just chalk it up to the fact that he was a misogynistic psycho and leave it at that.

  178. cnn ran a piece from a ctv feed this morning. the star and post and mop have had good coverage, no use of electronic devices in court, so the updates are slow. the crown does not have to prove motive but unfortunately i think the jury may be hung because of reasonable doubt. thanks for posting the ob, zed

  181. Thanks for the news flash, Painey, and thanks to you and the OB for bringing this case to my attention. I heard in their statements the Shafias still claimed to be not guilty. Well, they’ll have 25 years to reflect on that. I don’t think they’ll be very popular in prison…
