Halifax used to have an amazing fish and chip place in the west end BUT not anymore. The fish batter is greasy and does not have the crispy flavourful batter taste that the previous owners offered to the public. I wonder if it is really a haddock product nestled in the tasteless piece of fish batter. The fries are not even worth writing about, they are that bad. I will stick with the famous fish and chip restaurant in the north end of Halifax, at least their fish product is consistent and you know what to expect and not be let down. When you pay almost twelve dollars for a three piece fish and chips you want QUALITY. Also as for the west end fish and chip, you get your fish and chips all wrapped in three to four layers of paper, When you get ready to eat you have to peel of all these layers of paper first, VERY ANNOYING. So please I am asking that the north end fish and chip establishment PLEASE DO NOT CHANGE. —A Long Time Fish and Chip Lover

  1. A couple of years ago, some locals came up with this ‘Fish ‘n Chips Please’ site – I asked them on several occasions to try the famous North End place for a review but to no avail – they tried every other shit water f ‘n c place in HRM except the best one. This site even liked the west end place which has been disgusting for years. Overpriced, almost burnt batter, enough grease to polish your car and their clam orders would feed a fruitfly.

  2. Without a doubt, THE BEST fish ‘n chips in HRM, (I’d even go so far as to say THE BEST fish ‘n chips you’ll EVER have), hands down, smack-your- mama-in-the-mouth-if-I’m-lyin’-to-ya….Wharf Wraps in Eastern Passage.

You choose between haddock or cod. Nice light, crunchy, flavourful batter. Melt-in-your-mouth fish. Not at all heavy or greasey. And the portions….!! Fagedabowdit! I’m talking a full (FULL!) filet. No fish sticks or fish fingers here.

And THAT’S just the 1 piece!
    Religious experience. Srsly. For real.

  3. Fries and co has sucked for so long 🙁 DOnt know what went wrong. I highly recommend checking out fredies in bayers lake, best ive had in years!

  5. I’ve always liked John’s Lunch in Woodside, good portion and they don’t over cook it like most places, granted haven’t been in a few months but good the last time.

  6. I’m stuck on TBF…
actually had it for lunch today too. SO good.
I’ll have to try a couple of the places mentioned…
gotta get that 2-3 servings of fish per week into me.

  7. TBF, is another overpriced, tourist trap, place. The portions are a joke. John’s Lunch is great. Their clams and fries are also awesome

  8. camiles used to be good, once you fought off the cockroaches. feeners wasn’t that bad either. if you want real decent fish and chips, go to umncle buck’s on denith road, in sprytown. or try ken’s place in fairview. they are about the only 2 places left. and then there was cousins place, not sure if they are still going tho.

  9. Oh Shit! I saw your obvious math equations ‘cept, they weren’t that obvious! lol
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, PAINY!! Sorry I was so slow on the uptake!
I hope you have a wonderful day! xoxo

  10. I got the math, but the significance tok a while to penetrate my cementen brainbox. Hope this is a good day for you. >: )

  11. Happy happy, PG! I Hope you get something warm and furry on your special day!

I like John’s, too—the fish is so fresh you could slap it—but I wish they made their own tartar sauce and slaw…

  12. Wharf Wraps turned to shit about 3-4 years ago. They used to have great batter, then they switched to something ‘easier’, which holds grease like a sponge.

  13. Many places use aunt Jemimah’s pancake mix for the fish fry batter.

Another thing I’m picky about is onion rings. I only get them if they’re battered. Breaded ones are frozen.

  14. Fredies in Bayers Lake are my recommendation as best fish and chips in HRM, they also have bottles of malt vinegar at every place setting, not that yak piss white vinegar.

  15. mmm, love malt vinegar. i have eaten at fredies in tantallion, not sure if it’s still there. very good

  16. If you have bad fish and chips in the maritimes, fishermen should refuse to sell you any fish. I’ve always liked willmans, but I haven’t been there in at least 5 years. I remember a couple years ago I went to elephant and castle, ordered fish and chips. I was presented 2 frozen, formed, fish triangles. WTF? Really? 14dollars for frozen fish triangles? That shit should be a finable offense.

  17. no, i don’t really like cake. too many years of making them for other people

  18. I thought naming actual businesses and such was forbidden here but I’m willing to live dangerously. I am firmly on board with the John’s Lunch crowd. I’ve sampled other places but keep coming back to JL. The line-ups to get a table there say it all.

  19. SHITD – Willmans was taken over by a guy – My friends and I used to call him Borat, he was obsequious.

  20. Happy Birthday paingirl, I hope you had a great day if I’m not being too obsequious. What math equations?
Fish and chips. Mmmm, haven’t had those in a long while. Must rectify that situation.

  21. haha, when i’m doing the mop and pail crossword on saturday, the bear is my go to guy for those
