You called Social Services, not sure there is much more you can do on your side I guess you have to let them do their job.
I commend you OB. You’re taking action. You tried the direct approach and that didn’t work so, you go to the next level. Ideally, I hope this “mother” will get the scare she so desparately needs, clean up her act and look after her responsibilities, because no one really likes to see social services get involved. But, if that doesn’t happen, at least these kids can hopefully get the care and attention they need.
You’re a true mom, as you not only look after your own, but you have enough compassion to help out these innocent victims too. The world needs more people like you in it. Well done.

What happens if the children get taken away? They might end up getting shifted about through foster care for the next few years of their lives. This could potentially be more harmful to their psyche than pothead parents. It’s completely situational, obviously, but more often than not I would argue that parents keep the kids, but have to go through some intensive correctional therapy.
Coasters, completely irrelevant nattering. I know it is unstylish, but it is possible to have valid concerns about the abuse of marijuana because it can certainly be harmful under some circumstances — and I think the OB is totally valid.
I was thinking that too, Trolltoll, which is why I said in my post that ideally, I hope the parent in this circumstance will clean up her act and take some responsibility for her children. No one wants to have the kids taken away because you always hear the horror stories of siblings getting split up and/or put into even worse situations than what you were originally trying to remove them from.
If “mother” can’t (or doesn’t) want to step up and social services end up taking them away, I hope that there are loving relatives that would be willing to take them. It’s a gamble, yes, but given the situation the OB describes, at least there is a chance that things will improve for those kids. What other options are there?
First, I refuse to believe that because someone smokes pot they are a horrible parent. I smoke pot, and I believe that I would and will make a great parent. I have a good job, pay taxes, am educated, have the capability to love, support and educate my children. You know, the same as people who use alcohol responsibly.
Now, with that said… If a parent makes the conscious decision to buy drugs instead of food for her children, then perhaps your actions were warranted. What I don’t see is any definitive proof that the cupboards are bare and the fridge is empty, all I have to work with is your opinion that skinny kids equals malnourished and starving children. So, I have to wonder, are you basing your decision to call CS on some moral code that paints people who smoke pot as inherently evil? Although I am an advocate for pot as a recreational drug, I am not an advocate for people forgoing your parental responsibilities for the purchase of said drug. I guess what I’m trying to say is, don’t be blinded by some unfounded bias when it comes to pot, and make every effort to gather as much information is possible before contacting CS, to absolutely confirm that this mother is the monster you accuse her of being.

I think the OB is completely valid. I don’t think it’s that far of a stretch for someone who is a heavy dope user to maybe shave a few bucks off of the grocery budget for the month to help pay for their habit; especially if they are unemployed. In this instance, this seems to be a woman with what has developed into a serious problem and these children are being neglected over it.

The problem is not pot smoking. The problem is bad parenting. She could be hooked on crochet and her kids would still be malnourished.
Aren’t there some sort of parenting classes that the courts can make people take? (I remember that bruhaha over the three stroller moms–weren’t they on their way back from court mandated parenting class?) that would probably be better than taking the kids away willy nilly.

Well, I’m assuming like the majority of us, Xeno, we don’t know if such a class exists or how one would go about getting put on it…so, if what the OB describes is true and things are happening as she says they are, then I think she made the right call. Just my opinion.
And before the rest of you start ganging up on me about my first comment commending OB for doing this, I realize that I commented based solely on the assumption that the OB’s bitch were the cold hard facts. I get it. I may have knee-jerked with my comments but, if it IS true, than I stand by everything I said, 100%. I guess it’s up to social services now to decide if things really are the way the OB claims.

And Misspinky, I can almost always tell poor under-fed kids…Their skin is so pale it is almost blue and under eye circles are usually the tip off for me.

I am only going to point out with my own children , my youngest daughter had a friend who looked like a grasshopper, all skinny long legs & arms, could sit down & eat more than I could & look for more. She had 2 brothers who were skinnier then her & they always seemed to have something in their mouths & they never seemed to have been fed.
They Were & still are vey slim with large appetites. Some people just have a different metabolism than others…that’s all I’m trying to point out.

If everything is fine and dandy CPS will see that and leave them be. If not, the kids will be taken care of. Either way, the health and wellbeing of the kids is being put first.

Perhaps in this case they need to be removed until the adult is equipped with critical parenting skills..often these types if parents are self medicating their own unresolved issues and if they cannot deal emotionally with themselves they cannot teach their own children to be emotionally healthy either thus the cycle of repressed people continues often resulting in mental health issues and the criminal court systems when they grow…….
