Dear water glass flipper at local restaurant: Why must you do this. The first time we ate there, we thought you would just do it once. But you did it every. single. time. People in the city talk about how we often don’t want to eat at your establishment in case you are there, flipping our water glasses and expecting praise. You do not get praise for doing this. Everyone wants you to stop. Our laughter is that of embarrassed awkwardness, not encouragement. —Bird-flipper to the flipper

  1. Are the water glasses full when he flips them? Does he flip more than on at a time? Could you give more details?

  2. Don’t you hate it when people look like they are having a little fun doing their job! Terrible, terrible, terrible! Makes me angry!

  3. There’s enjoying one’s job, and then there’s annoying customers with narcissistic stunts that add nothing to the dining experience. On your next visit, OB, the moment the server begins to flip glasses at the table, ask – demand, even – to speak to the manager, then complain about the stunt and how it takes away from your expectations for the meal and the establishment. If the asshat responsible _is_ the one in charge, tell them that it’s annoying, awkward, takes away from the experience, reflects poorly on their professionalism and competence to run an eating establishment, and that you’re prepared not to visit again. While it might seem a poor excuse for a business to fail, little annoyances like that are often more visible manifestations of more hidden, but deeper and broader issues behind the scenes.

  4. Yes. I guess it depends on how ostentatious the flipping glass stunt was. Was it a casual matter of fact flip or a “hey-look-at-me-I’m-not-just-a-server-but-a-talented-juggler-too” sort of stunt. More info is required before the Bitch Review Board passes final judgement.

  5. Makes me kind of want my water glass flipped. They never do that kind of stuff at the Olive Garden 🙁
