Yes PK I agree that the mind is a complex thing, but surely people can tell the difference between right an wrong. Wanting to take part in polygamy, well I guess it’s your right as a free thinking person. Letting someone sexually abuse your child in the name of religion, well that’s just wrong, and some sort of charges, like facilitation of a crime should apply. These people should be taught a stern life lesson that there are consequences for their actions, or lack thereof.

With regards to Jonestown, they couldn’t leave. Jonestown was a model communist community and as such, Jim Jones controlled it like the communist nations of the time, (N. Korea, USSR, Cuba, etc). He did not permit members to leave of their own free will. They had to escape. In fact, he committed murder when a U.S. congressman and his delegation came on a fact-finding mission and tried to leave with 15 members of his temple after they expressed their wishes to defect and return to the U.S. 5 people were killed and several more wounded.
So, while it is true that these people joined this cult of their own free will, anyone wanting to leave had to make a daring escape and then take their chances in the jungles of Guyana or risk being shot. They couldn’t just leave.
Why did they join in the first place? The same reason these people chose to follow Warren Jeffs…brainwashing, as PK said. It doesn’t take much, especially if they are preying upon those people that are most in need. All you have to do is be charismatic, charming, make it seem like you know what you’re talking about, spin and twist people’s way of thinking and offer them something that they have always wanted but have never known. I’m not defending this monster or those who should have known better, not in the least. To me, they are lowest forms of life on this planet, ESPECIALLY because there were innocent children involved.
