It’s great the hospital staff got there wage parody. But the capital health should go for wage parody to Toronto, considering thats roughly the same difference in cost of living between halifax area and the rest of nova scotia as Halifax and Toronto. Considerinmg capital health does not have the right to complety strike they have to make sure everythings coverd. I hope they Choke on their fucking raises peaces of shit ASSHOLES.

  1. perhaps they are doing the same job rurally as they are in the city and so they ‘should’ get the same amount of coin… but their cost of living isn’t as high…

so I kinda agree with the reasoning here.
rural should be paid less because of cost of living and the fact that they aren’t having to support as many people (per worker)

  2. From what I’ve seen of the health care profession over the last five years (with Hub-Unit and an elderly mom), they are a bunch of lazy, fat slugs that couldn’t organize a piss-up in a brewery. Why the fuck should taxpayers pay for substandard service, fucked up paperwork and missing test results? Darrell fucked up again and you can be sure he’ll automatically bend over once he hears the click-click-clickity-click of Joan J’s spiked heels.

  3. Wage parody = making fun of wages
Wage parity = pay on par with someone else
This post = wage parity parody

  4. From the CH: “CUPE members have had wage parity with Capital district health authority workers for the last decade but didn’t get the latest 2.9 per cent annual increase metro workers received on Nov. 1, 2008.”

So, zZz they HAD parity and then lost it…why shouldn’t they have it again?

  5. we used to have slaves to do our labor… why shouldn’t we have them again? it would be cheaper and drive prices of everything down….

(and I can’t believe I didn’t pick up on the parody/parity thing… I could have come up with something better than my previous post…)

If I can make x dollars working my ass off in the city with never-ending patients… or move to rural south shore and deal with a few patients a day and make the same x dollars paying half the rent, I wouldn’t even have a second thought. Same as if I moved to .. say … yarmouth and did my same job with the same pay living there. I’d live like a king! $400 to rent an entire house there… rather than nearly a grand for a pithy one bedroom here ….
    no question.

  6. First I would argue that wage parity is a move in the opposite direction of slavery. Since they had parity up until the last contract was signed it is something that has been bargained for and granted in the past suggesting that there is a valid reason for why workers outside the capital health district should make the same money.

Also, how certain are you that rural health care workers work less? They service a smaller population but have less staff so the percapita numbers are probably similar to urban centres. Rural hospitals are also faced with staff shortages because it is difficult to attract physicians to rural areas because they make LESS money there.

The cost of living argument is valid, but I’m not sure it trumps the “same pay for the same work” argument in my book.

  7. i agree with ttfn…and she is talking about a non-rural situation…and i don’t mean to generalize but the fat, gossiping, i don’t give a shit workers seem very prevalent. maybe i caught them on a bad day.week.month…today i am bitter

  8. Whenever I look at Hub-Unit, I know N.S. health care has failed big time. Lost x-rays and reports, contradictory information, stupidity and unprofessional behavior has dogged us throughout this fucking nightmare. Our tax money pays their fat cunt raises and what you are promised is the wonderful world of sub-standard care. Especially outside HRM where treatment is a step above using leeches. Unless you’re dying, of course – then they’ll save you – can’t afford to lose a taxpayer, can they?

  9. The tuition for their training is NOT tempered by cost of living or location. WHY their wage should be who the fuck knows? Same job? Same training? Same pay. Simple.

When you go for a job interview are you ever quizzed about your rent or mortgage in relation to negotiating your wage? No. Just because it’s public money doesn’t mean a worker’s expectations are not reasonable or sane.

Finally, you get what you pay for so cutting corners to save a buck on all the worker’s backs does NOT improve quality of health care.

  10. Actually, Kay, I am in agreement with your post 100%.

If we want competent, dedicated people in public service positions, we must pay them a fair wage for their skills. Otherwise, they will leave for higher paying private-sector jobs, leaving the dregs in positions of crucial importance.

I do believe government must rein in unnessary or inefficient expenditures, but not by keeping salaries of the professional workforce unfairly low.

  11. yeah miles, i did, if you bother to read the last one, you will see that they are nmob run,all of them, and canada, now has them too. welcome to little detroit.

  12. LS: sorry if that comment seemed snarky…I was actually just curious. The first link was informative and the second one seemed strongly biased and it had like 10 different articles and I didn’t really want to read the whole thing to try and figure out why you linked to it.

  13. Agreeing with Kay on this one, these people are priceless when your life is in danger, but pieces of shit if they ask for a decent wage and living. They made the sacrifices, went and earned their degrees and have to deal with some pretty shitty work conditions almost constantly. Name-call them all you want, they’re valuable and as such, need to be paid what they’re worth.

  14. I just know that the company I work for has an office in Ontario and consider their cost of living higher than here. How they think that, I’m not sure…
but same job if I were there or here (only a timezone away) and yet I don’t think I could survive on my salary there. they would have to bump me up just to live as I have here.
Same in the other direction, you take a pay cut from moving there to here because of their wonky Cost Of Living index….

    as it should be everywhere.
I don’t think they should make the same pay…if their quality of life depending on the region they live in goes through the roof.
living in yarmouth doing what I do for my pay would net me no debt and able to afford a porsche in MAYBE 10 years. living in halifax…. twice that easily.

  15. It’s actually the support workers, which doesn’t necessarily include nurse, doctors, or EMTs. “Support Workers”, however, *does* include cafeteria workers. SO some folks don’t get their overpriced gag-inducing hospital food, and patients might not get their special dietary needs screwed up…

  16. Wage “parody” is right when we’re talking about higher wages for the same job based on living in NS vs. Ontario. The cost of living is not that much different in Halifax proper than the burbs of Ontario.

In fact, in Toronto proper, almost every amenity costs LESS than in Halifax, with the obvious exceptions of rents and mortgages. It’s a matter of a larger market which fosters more competition. Why would you pay higher prices at a grocery store when there are 6 more within walking distance with cheaper prices?

  17. no, it is not unionized…. but what the hell should that matter?
it’s still the same job for different money.

are you telling me EVERY person doing the same job in a union regardless of experience or longevity in that role makes the same amount of money?
someone 2 months out of school doing the same job as say someone who’s been there 5 years and knows the ins and outs of the job make EXACTLY the same???
    that sounds retarded.

  18. Seeing as no one has bothered to bring this little point up.
Why do workers union or nonunion need wages hikes every couple of years ?
Before you all slag me, I know the inflationary/cost of living increases…but why is that ????
THe reason its happening is simple, the Banking industry (which are the biggest criminal organization on the planet) have created wealth out of NOTHING. The Government(s) have backed these criminals & are IMO the second biggest group of criminals on the planet. Third are Insurance Companies who have gotten the people in Government that they pay off to legislate the insurance nightmare we all have to face to drive, own homes etc.

Since the 1920’s the American & Canadian & other currencies have lost 90% or more of their value ! ! !
THat’s right Ladies & Gentlemen 90 fuckin’ percent of a dollars buying power is GONE.

Welcome to the wonderful Banking Genius’s world of Fiat monitary value…money that is backed up by ……NOTHING.

Because of this we have inflation & as long as we stay on this system (until the bubble bursts -hint- last years was just a taste) this trend will continue. The Government is doing what it always does, trying & very successfully I might add ,to play one side & or group if you perfer of poor people (AKA workers) against the other side….which is why they can so successfully wage war.
They play one group of people/Nations against another group/Nation(s)and the War machine people (owned or controled by…you got it…the Bankers ) get even richer selling armaments & or lending Money to both sides…& we fall for it , again & again…see History of Mankind for Proof

    Isn’t Life grand ~:'(

  19. “Since the 1920’s the American & Canadian & other currencies have lost 90% or more of their value ! ! !”

But aren’t those also some of the strongest economies in the world with the highest standards of living? I’m no economist but we seem to be doing OK. Even if the value of our dollar is decreased by 90% haven’t we made up for it by having more dollars? I know my dad used to be able to buy 2 hot dogs and a soda for 25 cents but he also worked a lot harder for that quarter too.

  20. Yeah, heard about that in history class. I also remember that it happened after 1920 but wasn’t quite clear on how it fit in to your devaluation statistic. Since the great depression, and perhaps because of it, we have paid closer attention to inflation rates and the bank of Canada tries to influence that rate to prevent huge depressions and over-inflation. The fact that we weathered this last ‘recession’ better than our peers speaks to the success of our model. Under this system we have an economy that continues to grow and has shown itself to be able to ride out market fluctuations. We are one of the wealthiest countries in the world and enjoy a high standard of living. What’s the alternative? How do we move forward without destroying the things we enjoy? What happens when the bubble bursts?

I ask out of genuine curiosity by the way…as I said, economics is not my strength. But as I understand it, controlled inflation is a good thing and it’s important to ensure that wages at least match the rate of inflation. Also, our inflation rates are some of the lowest in the world…which I think is also a good thing. This all tied to interest rates which is how we control inflation. Those same interest rates are used to stimulate investment or savings and help to steady the economy. It involves a lot of people with calculators and horned rimmed glasses I’m sure…but at the end of the day, as long as there’s food in my belly and a roof over my head, I’m pretty content with the status quo.

  21. the dollar went to rat shit when they stopped the gold standard;get rid of the federal reserve and everything will fall back into place;(yes i’m a libertarian)

  22. “”Same job? Same training? Same pay. Simple.””

On the cover, this book looks fair…but “what about’ the difference in cost of living?

Perhaps the solution lies in tax credits for those living in high-cost urban areas. In London (England) they absolutely HAVE to help health and education workers with the cost of living in the city, there’s no way around it. People in expensive northern communites are often paid a bit more as well…

  23. Absolutely BMF. All this strike was about, as usual, was greedy unions. I don’t work in a union and I am aware that people doing the same job as me, within the same company, make more in Calgary. Why? Not because of the cost of living, but because they can’t keep anybody there because people are leaving to go work for higher wages at Tim Horton’s. Point is there is numerous reasons why wage parity does not work in various regions. I know if I was making the money I am making now in my hometown in Cape Breton, I would be a lot more comfortable than my purchasing power allows me to here in HRM. Meanwhile, our tax dollars will be funding this wage increase so that someone in buttfuck nowhere can live better than a similarly paid union buddy in Halifax. This isn’t fair. Unions are rarely about what is fair.

  24. miles, the first link told about how non union people have to pay union fees, even if not in union, in a unionized work place. the second link was all about the history of ubnions in the u.s., which are now also in canada, check the teamsters refference. it states that it was all mob controled and used mob tactics. i.e.:break your legs if you cross a line of pickets. did much change from the early days of them. probly not, probly never will. that’s why i say they should be disbanded, and just maybe, prices will stay leval for a week or two. they get raise, everything goes up, then they want more, dso on, ads nauseum. see my point now.

  25. I fuckin hate unions . Only thing they are good for is taking your money and whining about how unfair the wages are . Oh and maybe get you into one of there job sites for less then most of us non union guys make. Only use for a union is keeping it fair when it comes to hours and seniority . Thats it . I quit my union years ago and make as much or not more without one . As a business owner/contractor – I don’t need nor pay a union for union site jobs. Nor will I hire or take a union hire on my crew . Oh yea unions are great – CAW striked themselves mostly right out of a job . Striked so hard for outrageous wages they now have fuck all . Yea unions are great !!!

  26. Lifesucks. I get your point, thanks for clarifying.

I think unions have a place, it’s just once they have taken care of the basic needs (decent hours, decent wage, safe work environment, etc) they are left trying to justify their existence so they keep negotiating for more pay for less work. Most of the basic needs have been met by legislation now anyway. The only problem is if you take the union out of the equation, it wouldn’t be long before corporations started abusing their employees again. Some places, like Michelin seem to do OK without unions, while others, like Wal-Mart have some serious issues. Some unions seem to work well with their employers while others are obviously trying to extract as much as possible, justified or not. Same with the attitudes of unionized labour. Some really appreciate the job security and the ability to file grievances, while others use their unionized position to slack off because they know they can’t get fired.

  27. the whole thing about the strike is more money. (just about all strikes are thou.) They want the same pay as halifax “cost of living” thats what its all about for the most part anyways, with the greedy bastards. and as far as the food the patients get in the hospital all the food is made in Ontario and shiped sown to halifax.
