I get that you’d like to get paid and are only volunteering for us so you can further your skills and move ahead in a career, but you took this administrative job knowing it wasn’t going to be paid. You have the worst attitude. Every time I send something back to you and ask you to redo it, you grumble! Just because you’re working for us for free doesn’t mean you don’t have to do a good job. Our reports we get you type up have to be perfect, both in its info and appearance. I know you don’t think it’s that important to have a certain font size or structure, etc. but it matters to us! And the odd time we ask you to get refreshments for our meetings, you give an attitude there too. You told me you’re not here to be a caterer and that if you were, you would have taken a hospitality course! Now you’re always leaving earlier than you used to. Ok, we’re flexible about when you work (usually you work two 6-hour days per week, and it can be any day Mon-Fri), but for the past few weeks, you’ve been putting only 5 hours in all week. Of course, now you’re getting behind and you don’t seem to care. I hope you realize that we have fired volunteers in the past and you’re on thin ice. You better get your act together and lose the shittude if you want a reference from us. —It’s Hard to Find Good Free Labour

You cannot FIRE a volunteer but they can be DISMISSED!
… or barred from the building, enforced by security.
workers are FIRED OB !!!!
Slaves are SOLD !
I can understand wanting a certain quality of work & doing it right is important.
You want a drink or a donut, get up off your self important ass & go get it yourself.
It’d have to be a snow day in Death Valley before I ever brought you so much as a drop of spit !
But I would get the font as per your instructions right, & as long as it was “ADMINISTRATIVE duties” I would do my best or ask for clarification so I did get it right.
OB…look a donuts rolling down the hall quick get some unpaid smuck to run & fetch it for you ….woof ….woof !
Just because you are paying slave wages (aka nothing) doesn’t mean they are one !
As bitchy and mean-sprited as I am, I would NEVER write a bitch about someone who VOUNTEERS their time…
Yeah, sometimes volunteers don’t do what you want or expect; sometimes they don’t it it well. But, they are VOLUNTEERS.
Your cheap ass cunt don’t pay him/her so you have little room to bitch.
I hope we find out for which organization you work bitcher! I’m certain your Board would LOVE to know what you think about your volunteers…
This actually made me laugh out loud. You expect someone working for free, with a job to do, to go out and get refreshments for your meetings? I would have got up and left, recommendation be fucked. It’s wankers like you that take advantage of VOLUNTEERS that are making it hard to find GOOD FREE LABOUR. Shame on you and your organization.
I’ll betcha OB made the poor schlep ‘apply’ with a resume.
ROFLZ.
People tried pulling this shit when I was in school. They’d want volunteers, yet would have so many unrealistic expectations and then expect resumes. HAHAHAHA.
This bitch is like a tipping bitch: the OB is a twat. You get what you pay for. If you don’t like it — start paying someone. I think you really have things backwards here, OB. You’re not doing anyone a favour, they’re doing YOU a favour. Not the other way around.
I’ve discovered over the years that some volunteer organizations become little fiefdoms and cliques – if you don’t fit in with the ‘regulars’, you’ll get to do all the shit work. I’d shine people’s tires between me arse cheeks before I’d put up with that kind of shit, especially that coffee fetching horseshit.
*fiefdoms* haha good one, so true
There is nothing wrong with an unpaid internship. It gives people needed workplace experience. If they do a good job, a hire or at least a good reference or network connection is the reward.
A volunteer like this is looking for experience in a given field aren’t they? The refreshments part would be a little hard to take. Sounds like OP is taking advantage of her to me. Oh well you get what you don’t pay for.
Yeah, fuck that “applying” for a volunteer spot with a resume bullshit. You want free labour then romance me into it. I got a kick out of the volunteer kids in school with PK; the bunch of try-hards.
Ob, you have to be capable of starting at square one, and go out of your way to say please and thank you.
If so, then sit down with her and let her know that you need more from her. You need good work and good attitude. Don’t settle for anything less.
You are a mentor. You are the more experienced one remember? Teach this volunteer the importance of fuction and form in everything she does and as she is a volunteer at least buy her a coffee. Geeze ………
wait, you’d still consider giving this turdburglar a good reference?
Shit.. are you HIRING by any chance?
no you guys fuck that. If you’re volunteering for a job, you’re still DOING a job. You’re getting paid in experience and references. And if you don’t like what you’ve volunteered to do, you can quit.
Don’t blame the business for setting the expectation. Blame the volunteer for not living up to it and refusing to bow out gracefully when she/he realized it wasn’t right for him/her.
