To the individual who wrote “don’t be pushed out” on the promotional sign for an affordable housing project on Gottingen:

I assume you think you’re valiantly standing up against the evil forces of gentrification, working for the “little people” of the north end.

That lot has been an empty (‘cept for the billboards) blight on the neighbourhood my entire lifetime. It’s ugly, it attracts crime, it kills street life, and it drives families to the suburbs who aren’t interested in raising kids in a neighbourhood that looks one more vacant lot away from Detroit. The people who are too poor to move suffer when the population drops, local businesses and schools are closed, and crime rises.

I couldn’t think of anything better for that site than the well-designed, affordable housing project that has been proposed. Little infill projects like this are what will draw people back to the core and bring downtown back to its feet.

I think it’s super that you’re concerned about community issues but I think the effort would be better spent fighting, say, the endless suburban sprawl that truly harms the environment, our health, and clogs the roads with more cars. —Anonymous

  1. Any spacktard that feels the need to “express themselves” with a goddam spraycan is more concerned with their own juvenile ego than any kind of “issue”.

Graffiti without a message is just vandalism.
Graffiti with a message is still just vandalism

I think I sprayed that on the side of an anarcho-syndicalist squat – but I was pretty whammed at the time.

  2. Given there are so many Nova Scotians working out west in the oil sands…..maybe one could bring back one or two of those supersized bulldozers to plow over the yucky poor buildings of Gottingen so developers could transform the area into a friendly, appealing area.

  3. newt♥ i love all these symbols, too bad i can’t make them bigger. that collector fellow once kept his stuff in the forum

  4. Pulled Pork – frig that’s always good, this forum is becoming a foodies delight with mention of Cornish Pasties, Bacon butties – thank heavens it’s lunchtime and I can indulge.

  5. As Steven Schirripa (Bobby Bacala on The Sopranos) once said:

    “If I couldn’t eat; I’d fuckin’ die”

And, y’know – the man has a point.

  6. Bill and Ben: I saw a segment on Chris and Steven last saturday where this chef made the most delicious looking pulled pork sammich — he slow cooked it in dr pepper! mmm looked amazing! (and the chef was fat so you KNOW it’s good: I don’t trust skinny chefs! haha)

  7. hey I’m not fat (not skinny though) in that same vein : oven ham in orange pop and mustard and marinate steaks in cola and soy and garlic, both effing delice 🙂

  8. I think since OLN started showing BBQ Pit Masters and Man Vs. Food I’ve gained about 20 lbs. It is Effin’ Impossible to watch those shows without shovelling something into your mush.

  9. You’re the exception, martym 😉

UGH IVAN. I’m hitting the restricted cals HARDDDDD these days and it pains me to watch these shows. My life seems to have no meaning now that creamy dill ruffles are no longer in the mix. *sigh*

  10. *gorge* the bear loves that show…man vs food. a show last week featured a bbq place. where they had the ovens looked like a morgue with all the little metal doors. definitely a carnivore’s dream. the eating contests gross me out. i blame stephen king and the blueberry pie eating contest…spew^^

  11. You know what is SUPER gross, PG? Hot dog eating contests. They’re SOOOOO gross to watch. I love me some cooked weiners, but…not like THAT. *ick*

  12. Martym- can you give me the recipe to cook a ham with orange pop? I have one in the fridge that I need to cook and I’m not really good at cooking a ham… mind you, I make an amazing roast chicken!!

  13. with the chill in the air it’s time for the cauldron. the bear wants chicken soup. depends on the type of ham pf. i tend to boil mine to get some of the salt out then roast it…mmm split pea soup

  14. I’m not sure what type of ham it is PG… it’s only a small one. Sobey’s had them on a few weeks ago, buy 1 get 2 free.

  15. not difficult purple… just baste away really.
it’s the sugar in the pop caramelizing that you want.

most of a good BBQ rub and/or sauce is just brown sugar.

  16. Oh man, I miss Publix… I’d move to Florida almost for the Publix haha, and such great wine an beer specials too to boot

  17. zzz man is right just baste in a like 375 oven if it gets too condensed add water or more pop (if you like sweet) throw in some cloves too and raisins if you likey 🙂

  18. but you must admit chef martym/zZz, there is a large difference in cuts of ham. i just find sometimes if you don’t boil them first they are way too salty

  19. those spiral hams are excellent ; but if you know how to carve ; the leg is the best plus pea soup with the leftovers yummy! 🙂

  20. Painey! You found the symbols! I’m so happy for you (sorry, still catching up on other threads, so I haven’t read of your discovery yet).

All this food talk is making me huuuuungry.

Meanwhile – I think those condos on Gottingen will be great. Can’t be worse than the trash that’s there now. and they’re affordable for a single person making as little as $30,000 – so it’s not like they’re mansions.

  21. thank you ralmn, yes i found the mysterious portal. tho i am trying to limit my usage of said symbols^^

  22. interesting… I hadn’t heard about the price point.
that may very well be what gottigen needs

  23. I once roasted a chicken while drunk with Dr. Pepper and powdered garlic. Didn’t turn out too bad.
