I read in the paper today there is a proposed 40% increase for the water commission. This comes shortly after a proposed increase of 12% from Nova Scotia Power Corp. Thankfully the utility review board only gave them 6.5 percent.

Taxes have gone up again, making everyday small purchases harder on the wallet. I’m not sure where the province thinks we can afford these costly utilities… We certainly aren’t making more money to afford them.

How are we going to hurdle this recession if costs for necessities wont stop rising! I can’t imagine the people making minimum wages, how are they getting by? —Strapped for cash

  1. Well minimum wage has been increasing at quite a fast rate the past few years, so their paycheques will go up by more than the proposed increases in total $, although not as much of a % change. 40% increase in water would be about $12/month and 6.5% in power will be about $6/month for a total increase of $17-20/month. If you work 40 hours a week min wage 9.20/hr you will make 1472/month and this is to increase to 9.65 or 4.9% will be an increase to 1544/month an increase of $72/month, more than enough to cover an $18/month increase in utilities.

  2. People on disability and seniors do not get raises. What are they supposed to do? They’re already sitting in the dark and freezing all winter long as they enjoy their one meal a day.

  3. Informant saved me a little analysis there…. thnx!

still… those with loans (car/student) on top of all the rising costs are hurting….
I know I’ll likely be moving the second my job is eliminated (which almost happened 18 months ago…)

go live in a shed in Mozambique on 3 bucks a day..

  4. Most salaries do increase. This year most will increase 3% or more. I was happy to get 11% last year during the recession. Can’t wait to see what this year brings.

  5. but shit o.p., they keep making money for me. hope they go through the roof. the more you pay, the more in dividends i get back.

  6. Don’t worry about the ones with less money (min wage, retirees, pogie), they are the only people who the NDP slogan applies to. Every one else makes too much money (30k is so much! Who knows where to spend it?) to have programs they can apply to…

  7. Yeah I got a 1.5% raise this year… meanwhile interest rates are increasing again, besides the power and water… I guess I just need a new job… you know what sucks though, is so many seniors can’t afford to retire so they stay in their jobs longer, and then the kids who were promised lots of jobs as the baby boomers retired are in the unemployment line. I know it has to work itself out eventually, but geez, it just seems to suck for everyone.

  8. new job?
we all need TWO jobs to keep up with this shit…
unless you’re sebastien or trolling the streets at night sucking for a C note.

  9. Perhaps if we didn’t give $1B for G20 and buying jets we don’t need, baling out Pakistan (again) spending needless $$ on Tamil “refugees” and lawyers who work tirelessly on raping our wallets, commissions on this and committees on that, MP’s fat fuck pensions, the senate, Quebec whining moochers, bi-fucking-lingualism, multicunturalism, giving GM loans, the banks, special interest groups, lazy fucks who won’t work, 3rd generation welfare trash, long gun registry.
Saturday morning and the vitriol is going great.
I’m invading Poland this afternoon, only because they have great beer and sausages to die for.

  10. jets are needed, be harder on pakistan, fuck the refugees (espeically the lawyers),fuck most of the commitees, pensions should be earned, senate should be abolished, quebec needs to be put in its place,to official languages is ok,multiculturalism is selling out the only 2 cultures that are deserving, pure capitlism should rule, welfare needs a major overhaul(espeicially generational welfare.what the fuck is wrong with workfare)long gun registry can fuckoff, along with alll gun control.

    attack on poland, lets go

  11. I love Informant’s comment.

Dig this minimum wage monthly expenses breakdown Informant:

    +$1544 income
    -$540 tax and deductions
-$550 rent (you know exactly what that means)
-$150 food (pretty damn lean – actually starving if the work is physical)
    -$100 phone/internet/cable
    -$70 bus
    -$30 electricity
-$25 laundry (we don’t have the luxury of water bills and owning appliances)
-$40 smuggled tobacco (~10 cigarettes a day – full price would be $180)
    -$40 ($10 per week enterainment / incidentals)

This does not include dental care or health care or clothes or deodorant… luxurious stuff like that is not an option. It also assumes use of the foodbank.

So what the fuck does a water or electicity rate increase mean to the slaves? Nothing really. We will still be starving.

Go back to your SUV, leather couch, ceramic floors and expensive wife informant. We have no time for your fantasy life here in the real world where there are consequences.

  12. It’s not going to be a huge problem…seen in the Chronically Horrid today the Mayor & all the Councillors are getting another wage increase.
So stop worrying everythings fine !
