Halifax needs a utilities corridor…

Give it prime land all around the halifax harbour and bedford basin, so we can get all utilities to water developments.

Give it a highway, not one of those traffic jammed poor excuses of a highway. Make this a real highway that is designed to move traffic around the harbour much like a highway moves traffic around the Pearson Airport.

Give it a greenbelt. And a walking trail.

Allow bicycles on the walking trail, and for the first time in the history of HRM, cyclists from any ‘point A’ can commute to any ‘point B’ location….with over 80% of their commute on non-road trails, reducing accidents and improving flow. Wouldn’t that be dandy?

Maybe someday, a subway(not the restaurant) or LRT system can follow the same corridor. —dreamer

  1. Hello Dreamer,

Not dandy at all. You would have us expropriate huge amounts of property, spend hundreds of millions on executing yet another foolish municipal plan. And for what .. to emulate Toronto, of all places!

Sounds more like a nightmare than a dream.

  2. Have you ever read any of the many columns on here written about our inept Council and Mayor in name only?
My suggestion, move to a more enlightened city, Shawshank isn’t for you.

  3. A subway isn’t possible in HRM – Too much bedrock and hills, not enough people to use it.

A highway tracing the basin is a good idea, especially if coupled with a light rail system (similar to some Japanese rail lines). The idea is to build a double wide rail system with a 4 lane highway on top – over this would be walking and biking trails and green space.

The best part is the utilities corridor it creates – which removes over head power lines – but more importantly means that the power/water/utility guys don’t have to dig up someones street or yard to fix pipes and conduit – it’s all integrated.
