  1. No need to thank us for giving the warning to turn around. It’s the least we could do to save another peddler from the HRM. The court date has been set for July 20th @ 8:30am, at which time we are all going to plead not guilty. I see that most of us returned to the ‘scene of the crime’ and took the pictures of the 2 alleged signs, one at the entrance from the upper parking lot, and the other is on Birch Road. The next time you enter the park, take a look at these signs and tell me that it is clearly marked. If anyone has seen the article by Tara in The Chronicle Herald, May 30, 2007, she was one of the culprits also nabbed on Sunday. As bitter as what this sounds, when I returned to the park, I sat in the same spot and took pictures and videos of others that were riding on Sunday evening. When the park patrol, stopped us all, a flag should have been gone up immediately, if there were so many in violation of the by-law, then surely there must be something wrong with the signage in the park, is it possible that we all just wanted to disobey the HRM, nope all of us that were gathered up in the first round, informed the Commissionaire that we were unaware of the by-law. At this point in time he should have given us a fair warning instead of slapping us all with a $222 fine. But, with that being said there is a tilted, weathered old sign by Pinky’s Ice Cream; that states that the fine for riding on a Saturday or Sunday is $100. Am I pissed you bet, not just because it was myself, but the others that also got fined that day. Write to your city councilors. I could go on but I won’t. PS There were also children riding their tricycles and bikes that day, but the Commissionaire let them ride on by. If we received a ticket for riding on Sunday then surely the children should also pay. After all a by-law is a by-law is a by-law with out exceptions. See you in court!!!

  2. Rick – I’ve got a more formal, four-page letter of complaint ready to go out to all relevant parties, and am willing to bear witness to the whole situation when your day in court comes. Email me in reply to this if you can. I’m also gathering support at my workplace for you – I’ll explain offline, so to speak.

  3. Click on my name below and write me – that’s how you can get in touch about this. I’ve already contacted Tara about it – I read the column on Wednesday. The idling thing is also on the cards to be addressed.

  4. My wife and I were walking our bikes through the park one weekend (noting we saw the signs for “No Biking”). Ranger Rick said he could fine us for doing so. I thought it was no biking… not no walking bicycles through the park. I agree, not enough clearly visible signs posted and not enough signs clearly stating the fact. Now that we understood that, we’ve warned other cyclists, but they looked at us like we have three heads. If everyone shares the path and acts responsibly, there is no need for weekend regulations. The problem is interpretation of the posted signs which is easy to do. I’d kick up a stink if it were me.

  5. i think we sould be able to bike where we feel like it, it will encourage people to get off their asses and be active, however, when biking, blading and boarding, set an example and wear a helmet. if we want our kids off the sofa in broad daylight we are going to have to practice what we preach. treat a path like a street, bike on one side of the road. look at what you are doing and be careful of animals and kids…but mostly animals. a lot of times i have seen bikers on the wrong side of the street going up the sidewalk. then you’d deserve the fine. i wasn’t aware there was no biking on weekends in PPP. i think though that people should be aware of their surroundings and stay only on the gravel path. some of those sites are national and historic, like martello tower and the beach, i think the beach is fenced off now. but either way we don’t need the grass torn apart with bike treads, it was just put back together after juan. you should be able to bike when you want to and i commend you for persuing an active lifestyle when so many people are on their asses, however, regarding the park patrol, they’re following orders, it’s not their rules, they have to enforce it though. i think we should cut them some slack.

  6. Where the fuck have you people been? Hell, 17 years ago I bought a bike and went down to PPP on a weekend and saw the signs. Called up Peter Bigelow and got the 411 on why, and it made sense. Theres too many dog walkers and Yuppy Stroller, oh sorry: Sport Utility Strollers, getting pushed around to enjoy a bike ride through the park. No biking on Saturdays, Sundays, or Holidays? SO, when do you usually get to ride?Maybe the city council can put it on their ‘to do list’ to ignore for a few years: bike specific trails through PPP?
