Just now as I was crossing a road with a couple of chums. We happened to be using an unmarked crosswalk in front of a Police cruiser whose driver proceeded to threaten us each with a Jay walking fine. Did the officer enter into the intersection while pedestrians were using it? Yes. Was I Jay walking? No. No one in this city who drives including the Police seem to have fully taken in the Rules of the Road. Unmarked crosswalks are still crosswalks. —Dances with Drivers Hand Book

  1. Should’ve taken him up on his offer, after photographing the hell out of the situation and setting up a friendly blog… and then go and contest the fine and embarrass the hell out of that ass-wipe of a police officer!

  2. What is an ‘unmarked crosswalk’?

If it isn’t marked, doesnt that suggest it isnt a crosswalk?

I guess I could just jaywalk anywhere and if there is a cop watching: No problem – its just an ‘unmarked crosswalk!’

And “A couple of chums?” Is that you Mr. Burns?

  3. westcoastkid – I guess you need to read the rules of the road too. And unmarked crosswalk most often happens when a road intersect with another and you’re continuing from one sidewalk, crossing the intersection, to the other sidewalk.

It would be a waste of white paint to put lines down at every stop sign.

I have no idea, if you were just crossing at an intersection, where the cop would get you’re jaywalking from?? Strange.

  4. every intersection is a crosswalk… I thought that was pretty common knowledge these days.
Mr Popo would have had an interesting time issuing that ticket….

“There is a crosswalk at every intersection, whether
marked by lines or unmarked. Drivers must always
yield the right of way to pedestrians lawfully in
    crosswalks.
Every pedestrian crossing a roadway at any point
other than at a crosswalk shall yield the right of way
    to vehicles on the roadway.”

  6. Where 1 road intersects with another is not necessarily an unmarked crosswalk. For it to be so, the roads must converge in 4 directions, so you may well have been jaywalking. ( not enough info ) Not withstanding, you alone have a responsibility for your own personal safety.

Really though, getting into an argument with a police officer about the law. I’m no expert but I’m sure that’s a losing battle. But I’m sure your degree in emo douchebaggery covers all the traffic laws too.

  7. And intersection is a road junction where two or more roads either meet or cross at grade… so it could be a 3way (T), 4way (Cross), or 5way (like the Willow Tree)… Either way, those are all an intersection as defined by the law.

Now whether the person was in fact jaywalking, who knows… the OB doesn’t mention the actual intersection involved, which would be helpful, lol

  8. WARNING – nerd alert. Taken from: Motor Vehicle Act, CHAPTER 293 OF THE REVISED STATUTES, 1989.
    http://nslegislature.ca/legc/statutes/moto…

    “crosswalk” means that portion of a roadway ordinarily included within the prolongation or connection of curb lines and property lines at intersections or any other portion of a roadway clearly indicated for pedestrian crossing by lines or other markings on the surface;

    “traffic” includes pedestrians, herded animals, vehicles, street cars and other conveyances either singly or together while using any street for purposes of travel;

vehicular traffic shall yield the right of way to pedestrians lawfully in a crosswalk and all other traffic lawfully proceeding through an intersection or on a highway

A pedestrian crossing a roadway at any point other than within a crosswalk shall yield the right of way to vehicles upon the roadway

This Section does not relieve a pedestrian or a driver of a vehicle from the duty to exercise due care. 2007, c. 45, s. 9.

  9. T junction… 1 crosswalk?

take for example, parade square and george st.
there are 3 crosswalks there if I’m not mistaken….

    and no, I’m not.

  10. “poit” was the second most often useless thing pinky says.
I am very well versed in that cartoon…
having the dvd’s and watching that show since I was a young one.

The tongue twister episode, the one where brain builds the papermache earth (chia-earth, I believe), and the one where pinky gets to come up with the world domination plan are my top 3.

  11. You’ve got to see the ep. titled “The Third Mouse”. Black & white and it capitalizes on Brain’s Orson Welles voice. Just a lot more narfs than the film.

  12. zZz: agreed, 3 crosswalks at George St and Barrington. Also 3 crosswalks at Granville and Salter, or Argyle and Blowers.

You take your life in your hands when you try using a legal unmarked crosswalk when there’s a marked one (serving essentially the same purpose) nearby, though. Not to mention the dirty looks from the cretins.

I feel sorry for some of these poor fuckers when they get out into the suburbs or the country…they probably wander for miles up one side of a road hunting for a painted crosswalk. Duhhhhhhh…..

  13. with a cop once at the intersection of Argyle and Duke. He advised the marked cross walk was the only legal crossing of Duke.

Of course when trying to cross Lady Hammond at MacKintosh there are no marked crosswalks. I sent a request to HRM for one and was told there wasn’t enough foot traffic. Seeing as there are bus stops on either side one would think that workers would at some point have to make it to the other side. I was told these are unmarked crosswalks. NOT that the drivers up Lady Hammond let you cross or anything.

People need to understand both how to let people cross the street and how to cross the street legally and not put yourself at risk. There are no protective barriers on any crosswalk – while the driver may be charged for hitting you, they’ll still have to hit you. And take it from me, that hurts – a lot!

  14. hear that everyone? newsflash,
getting his by a car hurts – a lot!

or potentially only for a couple minutes.
