Unfair tones

Your biggest problem in the world is not being able to find makeup?! And it’s such a huge task that you feel the need to write about it?! SERIOUSLY! (Any chance you’re a “Toronto Girl”?)

I’m sure if it sold enough to make profit, the stores would have it for you.If you don’t like that fact of business, move to a socialist country or something.

I TOTALLY support Miss “I want to be blemish free too” because I can’t find make up in my shade at any of the major drugstores and department stores either (except Sears…but I’ve never tried theirs, so I don’t know if it will aggravate your skin). I’ve struggled with acne for over a decade, and I have tried everything. My advice to you is TRY THE MAC. The service is great because they take the time to match your makeup to your skin, the makeup is of excellent quality, it comes to match all undertones so shades doesn’t look fake, it is oil-free and non-comedogenic, and unlike other make-up made for darker skin tones, it actually has sunscreen in it, so it protects your skin from sun-damage. It’s expensive, but it goes a long way.To the bitchers who left comments before me, next time, hold your tongues. If you have nice, clear, blemish-free skin, just be grateful, because you’re damn lucky. The reason it’s important for darker skinned people to get make-up that matches is that our blemishes are a lot darker than our natural skin colour (because of hyper-pigmentation), so they stand out SO much more. Yes, we can get medication for the blemishes, but it takes months for blemishes to fade and in the meantime, it’s nice to cover up look like your skin is ok. Facing the world with clear skin on your face can really boost yourself esteem. Furthermore, you don’t know how frustrated you feel when you realize that most of the make-up counters in the city don’t carry make up for darker-skinned people. They used to, but those shades don’t sell because the undertones are pink, and we all have orange or yellow undertones, so although the make-up looks like a match in the container, it looks like a mask when actually on our skin (and we look clown-faced in pictures). What really sucks is that we have to go to higher-end makeup counters and spend so much more to match our skin tones. It feels like having to pay extra just because you’re dark. Due to availability, lighter skinned people can get away with a $15 bottle of liquid foundation or a $10 powder compact, but we have to pay approx. $30 and $25 respectively for those things…AND WE DO. I agree that you are right when you say that’s how business works…It really is all about supply and demand… after all, Halifax isn’t that diverse, so why carry a rainbow of skin tones that just don’t sell? (I’m not being sarcastic; this is just a sad observation.)

Funny…Doesn’t Mills Brothers carry Clinique, Estee Lauder, Lancome, etc? Thats next to Shoppers and across the street from Lawtons and I was sure they kept a selection of shades available. Funny how you seem to ignore that option but take the bus/ferry both ways, totaling 4$ to Dartmouth to buy makeup…Clinique is going to run you in the 20-30$ range and is hypo-allergenic. I also thought that Marcelle had some darker shades, they are also hypo-allergenic. Marcelle is more in the 13$ range. Have you ever asked about having a color ordered in for you if these are not suitable alternatives?The way I see it though, if you have to pay 20$ for a bottle of foundation…thats a little higher than average but you are getting an above average product. If you’re lucky enough to be able to use Marcelle, it comes highly recommended by me as its very similar to Clinique for about half of the price. I realize that I am lucky enough to have the choice to buy foundation and powder ranging in price from 8$ to 40+$ but I also recognize the stuff in the middle as good quality without the huge price tag!

This is a totally valid bitch! Those nay-sayers above who claim this is not such a big problem should be out there working on fixing up their big problems rather than hanging out online waiting for someone they can anonymously bitch at. As for the problem at hand – it is completely unacceptable that this is going on – having just lived in Europe for 2 years I am constantly amazed at the backwardness of this area that is exposed is very subtle ways. Most people who read these will probably be amoung a culture aware minority, but those who are not aware that this is a sign of a bigger problem are the ones who need to have it brought to their attention.

acne problems are usually caused by something you are eating that is unhealthy…. spend your $ on healthy foods and save on cosmetics

oh wow ddr – you say “uh” as to say that you know all there is to know about a socialist country. First off you must be a dreaded hippy from toronto with rich parents to jump to such hasty conclusions. Second I cant even fanthom how you can say canada is socialist when half of our gdp relies on our COMMERCIAL exchange with the US. Plus, the first thing that Jonny chretien told us after september 11th was to GO SHOPPING. Canada wouldnt be sitting at the g8 table if it wasnt for HEAVY reliance on capitalism. And finally the only reason Canada is as “socialist” as you make it appear to be with your healthcare argument is because of good old quebec – which everyone bitches about when it is the ONLY fuckin reason we havent become the 51st american state.
