I know of several couples for whom it has worked out extremely well. My understanding is that if you go to a proper site (rather than one of the ‘catch and release’ dating sites), by the time you get your personality profiled and matched up with eligible suitors, you’re as far along as conventional date #5, at least in terms of knowing what you’re getting.
Don’t see anything desperate about it at all — it needs to lose the stigma (I think this is happening). Isn’t it more desperate to hook up at a bar etc. without knowing anything about someone??

I’ve never tried online dating. I have no desire to do so. I’ve looked at the folks on online dating sites and I’ve heard horror stories from those I know who have tried dating sites and there’s been a lot more weirdos on there than actual people I’d consider dating.
Perhaps there are some decent people on there, but when you have to resort to finding people on the internet… there seems to be some desperation. At least in the examples I’ve seen. *shudder*
And maybe it *does* take more ‘confidence’ to admit to the world that you’re desperate enough to have to find people on online dating sites. So you’re probably right on that.
