There are a few moments of sun in the forecast over the next couple of weeks. When these moments happen, seize them. After two weeks of wet shitty weather coupled with PM and KISS’s tractor trailers, the blue biffies, and their 1000s of head-up-their-ass fans, the common will be trashed yet again. Thanks HRM. There’s an endless number of green spaces all over this province and you pick the one that is used consistently used throughout the summer by your public…dinks.

  1. If you can’t beat ’em…perhaps join them…altogether now…”Here comes the sun…”

    ~ Let the Beatlemania begin!

  2. Unfortunately, or fortunately in the case of these upcoming bands (KISS, Paul McCartney) the Commons are handy for the QE2 and defibrillators and other geriatric devices are on hand.
Surely the Atlantic Winter Fairground could’ve been used?
I do sympathise with the poster.

  3. To whoever made the decision:

Allowing people to charge ADMISSION to enter the COMMONS?

Bzzzt. Awww… I’m sorry. No. You lose. We already pay admission in the form of taxes. …time to give someone else the reins.

  4. I say it’s a good thing. Better use it for something good, rather than have kids mugging people day after day. By the way, there a re plenty of green spaces in the HRM. Just drive 30 minutes outside of the city proper, and you’ll find forests, walking trails, etc. Plenty of green space, just get off your lazy arse and find it.

  5. Dr. Fever,

Since you seem to be talking about nighttime, I agree. You are right. People don’t use the grounds for much good after sunset.

I just don’t think they should be turned over to private enterprise before that time of day.

  6. Has everyone gotten a stuffed seal & some red paint or dye to put on it so we can really make a statement to sir Paul ?
Me I’m going to be working the set up & tear out…but even with a backstage pass , I’m not going to waste my time seeing his show. But I sure would love to see/hear about lots of bloody seals out in the audience 😉
Now Kiss on the other hand, Hopefully they won’t be wheeled out & dusted off.

  7. I don’t remember hearing so much uproar anytime a concert has been held on the hill, why are we far more worried about the commons?

  8. PAS: Umm, because some people enjoy playing softball and/or other sports (soccer, football, frisbee, rugby, etc.) on the Commons, as this is the intent of the Commons. No one is playing softball on Citadel Hill’s slope, fool.

  9. Well you can certainly play all those sports on the Garrison Grounds, which are part of the concert grounds at Citadel Hill, fool.

  10. I am so glad the Highland Games and Scottish Festival moved over to the Dartmouth side Victoria Park a couple of years ago…..great green space..great view…loads of parking …..I would not go because it was too crowded and badly kept and disrupted feng shui at the Wanderers Grounds……the Dartmouth Park is so under-utilized by events and the public in general.

  11. PAS: Right. Comparing the amount of activity on the Garrison Grounds to the Commons is ludicrous. Wait, yes, now that I think about it though, I can’t count the innumerable amount of times I’ve seen baseball and softball being played on the Garrison Grounds diamonds.

Of course…the logical place to play softball once the Commons are destroyed are the Garrison Grounds. Right. FYI, yes, you can play the other sports there, but the main problem is concerts chewing up the grass and infield on the diamonds, rendering them, you know…generally unusable mudholes.

  12. Unless it piss-pours on the day(s) of the concerts, the commons won’t turn into a mud-hole. There’s gonna be garbage that needs picking up, there will be damage from the event set-up/take-down and the grass will be trampled, sure, but give it a week and it will be fine to use again. Nobody’s bringing their cleats and/or moto-tiller to the shows.

Besides, since when do you need the grass to be immaculate to play recreational sports on? I’m honestly more worried about the citadel, since it’s a great spot to lounge on sunny days – something immaculate grass is great for.

  13. I prefer the Citadel for concerts because of the natural stadium seating. But the common works too. I think downtown is definitely preferable to a more out of the way or industrial locale. It’s also only for a couple of days a year, so most of the neighbours should be able to suck it up.
