Last weekend I was at a drug store near Gottingen and Duffus running errands – my cell died, and I needed a pay phone to a) call a friend I was planning to meet, and b) call a cab. The pay phones in front of the store didn’t work… staff in the stores in the area might call a cab (thanks to the girl at the corner store on Duffus) but no one would let me use their phone to call a friend… all looked at me like I was a potential criminal for even asking. I live and work in the north end – it seems most pay phones in the area don’t work, and it doesn’t look like the phone company has any plans to fix them… (yet downtown pay phones all seem to work – discrimination against north enders?) How about Coast – provide us with a map of working pay phones on the peninsula? —Need a Pay Phone! Please!

  1. they probably think everyone has a cell phone. like public drinking fountains, they’ve become extinct. you can use our store phone, as long as you’re not using cuss words or calling japan

  2. So, OP, why would it in the Coast’s interest to take the time and energy to provide a map of all working phones in Halifax?

And who would be responsible for checking these phones regularly to see if any broke down?

Interesting idea, totally unrealistic – you really ought to learn that this planet does not revolve(or even jive)around you. Fuck, you have an amazing sense of entitlement.

  3. I didn’t know the ones in south end work…
half have the ringers ripped right off the phone.

  4. A real result of today’s technology where even some cell phones seem to have a cell phone. As useful and needed at times as they may be, pay phones just are not bringing in the revenue to pay the company enough to have many around, or even repair broken ones. In fact they eventually remove those that have been damaged too often.

  5. Save yourself the headache and buy a universal charging battery for your cellphone. Everready sells one that will fill your phone a second time while you are on the run.

  6. The reasons are simple why thee arenot many pay phones. The first two being theft and vanadlism, which make replacing them a very bad business decision due to losses and repairs/replacements. The other, as earlier stated, is that just about every man and their dog has a cell.

  7. Its just like a moronic retail worker to complain about OT at 48 hrs instead of 40.

OP the problem is your wage.

  8. I assumed most pay phones are just there for show. The one in the Clyde street booze store works as I’ve seen drug dealers and prostitutes using it.

  9. They are also important to the crack/vagine based economy at the corner of Charles and Robie. That’s why I moved in fact.

  10. what, a working pay phone, in halisux? you gotta be fucking joking. most of them are fucked, thanks to the little douchebags, smashing and fucking them up. just once, i would love to see a pay phone take revenge on them.

  11. I heard that there is a plan of phasing them out. I think that’s unfortunate both because they do come in handy in case of emergencies, and because where is superman going to change into his slacks? A cell phone would just be awkward for that…

  12. happy k: phasing out the crack whores?

    Oh, you mean phone booths…

    And you DID say slacks…

    Neat

  13. they don’t fix the pay phones in the north end due to high volumes of drug call and deals, just like what happends at the irving gas station phons on charles and robie street

  14. I agree. You idiots and your cell phones will know it when you grow you got tumors poppin out your head in a few more years. They should invent pay phone speaker phones with a cage around them that idiot vandals cannot break.
