I had lived in the Ocean Towers (TRANSGLOBE) on Brunswick St. in Halifax N.S. from 2004-2007. I moved out in the spring of 2007 when I finished school. I had numerous problems with my apartment, from bed bugs, mice, poor maintenance, rents rising with no improvement to the building, lack of security. The worst was trying to survive a winter with absolutely NO HEAT in 2006-2007! The “boiler” was said to be non operational, but would be fixed immediatly. It took months, and no matter how many complaints were filed, my roommate, my 5 yr old and I were ignored. I know that more people had the same problem.
I’m currently being sued by TransGlobe…
Please, I would truly appreciate anyone’s feedback on this.
Did you have the same issues?
This article appears in Oct 9-15, 2008.

Why on Earth are they suing you?
The only reason I could see OP being sued by these slumtastic asshats known as “property managers” is for not paying rent. In NS, it is against the tenancy act for a tenant to withhold rent for ANY reason, no matter how asshat-ish the landlord is. Unfortunate, but true…
Go see the tenancy board and get some information. Then counter-sue and see if you can settle with them. Civil courts look kindly on single mothers (I assume you are) being trodden upon by large slumlord corporations. On another note, I am new to Halifax and really, when I saw “Ocean Towers” I immediately thought they were tenements. Those kind of tenements that because the elevator works (sorta) they think they can justify renting it out $750 for a one bedroom. Also you might to find a few other residents or former residents, then get a lawyer to start a tort against them. Who knows? Start a smear campaign online, or petition – maybe something good can happen…its important to give these guys as much trouble as possibe.
Problem is Ocean Towers already has the worst rep in the city and they still don’t care.
Neither TransGlobe nor Kill ’em Properties will rest until they’ve bought up every mid-range rental unit in the city, jacked the price up through the roof while allowing their properties to sink deeper and deeper into disrepair. People who have called these apartments ‘home’ for 30+ years are suddenly being driven out and into the projects. A half assed coat of paint in the common area does not justify a $50 hike in the rent! These new monster “property management” firms are the scum of the earth, right up there with Big Pharma and the insurance industry.
hint….I would like to see an article maybe exposing TransGlobe and other slumlords like them…..hint….
The Coast actually did a good piece on ‘Urban Gentrification’ last year, but its definitely an issue worth revisiting.
do a Google on TransGlobe….seems to be a theme….http://www.peak.sfu.ca/the-peak/2006-3/issue11/lastword.htmlmaybe TransGlobe should be evicted from Halifax?

Thanks for the links Barcode. I wonder how the BC case turned out. I know that Kill’em was doing the same sort of staff plundering around here (albeit on a relatively smaller scale) as the 2nd article describes. Call centres can’t bleed your rads or patch up a leaking ceiling.
