I come to this forum for the participation in group discussions regarding various subjects. There is room for thoughtful discussion, seriousness and lightheartedness, letting off steam, growling and grumbling but I personally draw the line at personal attacks and name-calling. I may disagree with someone’s statement as other’s may disagree with mine but I don’t see that as a license to launch a verbal attack on the person in dispute of the idea. It keeps things more sophisticated and what’s wrong with that? I don’t think anyone comes here to be abused by the others. Life is a set of learning experiences and I’m sure we will all take something away from our experiences here at The Coast’s LTWWB. I hope you find the happiness in life that you seek Kay. For what it’s worth, and in defense of kay, I believe that the personas we take on in this forum are extensions of our inner personalities. It is not worth it to be offended or get your panties in a bunch over what some people consider a “personal attack” on an internet forum. This place is a great forum to debate various topics but it’s also a fun place to call someone out on a differing opinion in a snarky and rude manner. It’s what makes this place more entertaining than a traditional debate club. Can you guys imagine how fun it would be to watch a formal debate with the kind of bantering that goes on here? Of course there are many things about Halifax, and the East Coast in general that do need improvement. Also, yes, there ARE some things that drive me absolutely crazy, but, being an optimist, I always believe that they can/will be improved— Maybe not as FAST as I would like, but yes, in general, I believe that things do tend to improve. (Now, Barrington Street is giving this belief quite a test believe me.)
The issues you pointed out in your post are very real, and often do result us looking very bad in the eyes of the nation and the world.
My “pro Halifax” stance however is more general, admittedly in response to some of the “ALL people in Halifax are this or that” . . . “ALL people in Nova Scotia act like so-and-so” . . . “EVERYTHING negative can be blamed on it being in Nova Scotia” . . . that the very existence of common modern-world social problems are primarily due to “typical NS ignorance” etc.
That approach has been what I have found to be offensive, and worthy of countering—NOT the criticism of the actual issues that desperately DO need to be addressed.
I have also intentionally held back on certain kinds of comments so as to not reveal anything that could indicate who I work with or some of the people in my circle of acquaintances. So, yeah, you ARE getting an incomplete picture of my entire set of views if you only go by my posts here. (Oh, God! I sure hope that I am a little more rounded in “real life” than the character I appear to be on here!!!)
All in all, I guess it is a matter of attitude—one that has formed over the last several decades of varied and often hard experiences. It’s not about acting like a hillbilly and saying that anyone who wants to change something should just leave. It’s more about coming to a conclusion that people ultimately HAVE to take responsibility for their own happiness. That each of us has places in the world we like or dislike, where we can or cannot fit in, and that life IS too short to spend it in a country/city/job/profession/relationship that you despise. That one still might encounter truly evil, nasty people where ever they go, but these people are not the norm in Canada, and I would also add (with some caution) the world.
And yes, “when she’s good, she’s really really good” and so I too will miss some of the liveliness that Kay has brought to the conversation.
