First of all, I would like to commend you for your diligence towards personal health. I’ve tried to take up jogging, and I just can’t stick with it. But it seems that while you are out there keeping fit, you have forgotten some basic manners.

You see, I own a dog and therefore have to walk my dog on the same sidewalks you use, but you guys never seem to be abe to share them. I always make sure that my dog and I move out of your way, you never move out of ours. That is fine, I suppose as there are often herds of you and only two of us.

Often, I pull my dog off to the side, make her sit and we wait for hordes of you to jog on by. And here’s what really gets my goat: No one says thank you. Not a single one of you has ever said thank you. Instead you keep chattering about your yoga classes and no carb diets and pass us by like you didn’t even notice us. That is rude and inconsiderate.

While you may feel good about your level of personal fitness, you should feel bad about your lack of social graces, manners, and common courtesy. Don’t worry though, getting into the habit of saying thank you is easier than getting into the habit of jogging. —Mrs. Manners

  1. Ah, jogging – did it for 2 decades, now have the fucked up knees to prove it. What a huge waste of my life that was.

  2. I agree OB, I have experienced this phenomenon before in PPP, very rude and inconsiderate indeed, I always feel better when I hear a jogger is hit by a car.

  3. This phenomenon is not unique to joggers. I think the problem is with those of us who make an effort to move out of peoples’ way. They get used to this and then just drift around the streets haphazardly, not evening looking where they’re going. I say we stop moving out of the way of these SET swivel-headed fast walkers and then maybe they’ll get the picture. But then again, if we did that, wouldn’t we become them? Whhoooa just blew my own mind there.

  4. I find this used to be more of an issue… back when I was closer dowtown.
Haven’t seen hide nor hair of it since.

you’d be best to avoid all sidewalks from spring garden’s running room going south to PPP.
with all the blissfully ignorant students and nutritiNazi, reformed health nuts concentrated down there, you’re asking for trouble.

  5. Manners have gone the way of the Do-do, in general. I get a particular chuckle from the folk who think that it’s a threat to their manhood (or womanhood, integrity, human rights, etc.) that they might have to accomodate others in this sweet, civilized world we inhabit all together. They tend to puff up and spread out across the sidewalk even more.

Lately, I’ve been having some really decent fun teasing the slow walkers and bottle-neck blockers engrossed in their iGadgets. Saying a polite “Wakey-wakey” or “Move yer arse” never fails to elicit a stream of their thoughtful witicisms. Effin’ arse nibblers….

Ah, ’tis the season of cheer 🙂

  6. I was once pushing a stroller out for an afternoon walk, when this voice bellowed behind me ” scuse me!” he yelled it twice before I awkwardly shifted to the side and he jogged on through with no thank you. It’s like jeez buddy, is there a sale on those short shorts? Sometimes they act like they own the sidewalk, and all must yield.

  7. IDK, OB; I ha a dog in Hali (I miss him so!) and walked him allatime–I figured it was my job as a dog walker to make sure he didn’t annoy or frighten people or other dogs…nothing I’d expect to get thanked for. Isn’t it even posted that’s what you have to do on the paths?

    And I wouldn’t expect anything from a running horde…!

How about if I say thank you now for being a good dog walker? Would that help?

Who’s a good dog owner? You are, that’s who!

  8. Kombacha if a runner endangered my kid my only concern would be whether to trip him or clothesline him.

  9. My feeling is that, if you’re going to run in public, be ready to move around obstacles not the other way around. Otherwise go find a track to run around.

  10. These runners also do not stop at intersection, or red lights….they run right out in front of cars. I guess they’ve been breathing in exhaust fumes from cars for so long that it’s destroyed their common sense.
