I think the point is that her dancing sucked dick, and a talented black person had already done an amazing job with it. In an art gallery, commentary is almost always made about the value of the re-appropriated art, especially in comparison to the performer, their aesthetic, and the institution itself. This will always amount to mockery, whether she intends it or not.
What is all this fuss about “blackface”? I heard it first around Halloween when some white celebrity dressed as a black man, I think Jay Z or something. But because he painted his skin for Halloween this was a big deal to someone? I don’t understand this (honestly). Is it because we are not supposed to see skin color? Why can’t a black person paint their face white for Halloween and visa versa. Sorry if this comes across ignorant.
You do realize that Beyonce has taken “inspiration” (by which I mean plagiarized) many of her routines in the last few years from European pop/performance artists. She lifted one of Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s pieces for the video for “Countdown” and one of Lorella Cuccarini’s routines for the Billboard music awards in 2010. A quick google search will confirm… Want to know something interesting about these artists that she lifted material from… they are white. How is what the student did any different than Beyonce herself? Or is it okay to be a thief if you are famous and have tons of money. Its not a race issue if the “impowering” dance routines didn’t come from Beyonce herself…
