I’m a student, and cash is a bit tight at the moment until next payday, but I still have to eat, you know? So I got all my pennies and I rolled them up, in clear plastic, before going to the store. The bill came up to $4.50 (gotta love those ramen noodles), and I took out the three rolls I had and asked you if you minded if I used them to pay. I wasn’t really expecting you to say anything but yes, I mean, they were rolled already and in the clear plastic things, right? And they might be pennies, but they’re still money. It’s not like I took out a bag of pennies and dumped them on the counter and made you count them all, so I don’t know why the hell you gave that great big sigh and pulled a total bitch face on me instead of answering the question, but that just pissed me off.
So, I looked behind me, and there was no lineup… and I had a loonie and a twoonie, but guess what? I decided if you were going to be a bitch about it, I was too. That’s why you got all my nickles and dimes instead for the rest of the bill. I hope you enjoyed counting them all, because I sure enjoyed watching you do it. —Glen Coco

YOU GO, Glen Coco
This is actually covered by legislation. The Currency Act sets out limits on a tender of payment in coin:
* forty dollars if the denomination is two dollars or greater but does not exceed ten dollars;
* twenty-five dollars if the denomination is one dollar;
* ten dollars if the denomination is ten cents or greater but less than one dollar;
* five dollars if the denomination is five cents; and
* twenty-five cents if the denomination is one cent.
But, as always, agreement between the parties will determine what is acceptable. For instance, stores and banks are often glad to accept coinage beyond these amounts, particularly when it is wrapped and labelled.
way to stick it to her.
I know I’m changing the subject a bit but…..I don’t get how it’s legal for those stores that say they don’t deal with the penny.If your owed 2.02 they don’t give the customer the 2 cents their owed,sure thats nothing, but for that store owner it can add up over time. It’s theft or it should be.
Oh well, the penny will be extinct before too long and this will all be moot.
4.50 for Glen Coco. You go Glen Coco!
by law, they have to take them. it is legal tender and therefore oky to use. but don’t try this shit on a us, or anything that needs exact change or tickets. i got rid of all the pennies i had saved over the years last month, before i went away. had over 300 bucks in them, and they were heavy.
i hear the 5 dollar bill is next to go, by 2015 i think, or before then.but take the pennies to a bank for an easier deal.
“by law, they have to take them.”
uh nope.
I actually quoted the law above, douchepumpkin.
no store is required to accept any currency.
It’s to their detriment to avoid it all, but it lets places that get robbed or counterfeited ad infinitum refuse to accept larger bills.
i have lots of pennies, not boasting, just the facts
I have lots of pennies….but not much ‘sense’.
speaking of pennies..
not all are created equal.
