the young woman getting off the 52 yesterday who said and I quote: “could you wait for me to get off the bus before you get on?” It’s called a rear door. Use it. By golly, if I recall correctly there are even big bright yellow signs posted stating “use rear door”. If you are going to disrupt bus etiquette you have given up your right to bitch to and about fellow passengers. So, next time save your breath, take those few extra steps and get off in the back just like everybody else.

I KNOW!man i hate it when people do that!!!
the real question is why the bus drivers don’t tell people lining up to get off at the front door to turn around and use the back door…
It was rude of her to say that, but seriously, couldn’t you wait? If i’m sitting right up front, i’m not walking all the way to the rear door. Personally, it annoys the shit out of me when i go to step off of the bus and some guy is trying to barrel his way through me. It only takes a minute of your time to check for anyone who may be coming out, and i think it’s rather rude not to wait for someone to get off first. Try a little patience and common courtesy.
I agree with poop. There may be signs saying “use the rear door” but I don’t see the point unless you are closer to it than the front. I doesn’t take a genius to look before you get on the bus!
Then you SJM and poop are BOTH narcistic idiots. How hard is it to follow mudda’ fuckin’ instructions? The bus is one way access unless you are disabled. But come to think of it, you might be mentally retarded and are thus entitled to exit out the handicapped way instead of the normal people way. If that is the case I apologise for your lack of mental facualties.
Normally, I use the rear door to exit the bus, however, during the winter isn’t not always that easy. Most of the time when there is snow on the ground, it all gets plowed onto the curb and sidewalk. If the bus stops have been cleared at all, they are almost never cleared enough to get out of the front and rear doors. If I need to use the front door to avoid jumping from the bus into a pile of snow up to my knees, I’m going to do it. It rarely takes more than a minute for everyone to get off the bus, so develop some patience and simmer down.
Isn’t it equally “narcissistic” to be unable to wait until the passengers exit the bus before entering? What about in the winter when rear exits are often blocked, slippery or a giant puddle? Isn’t it more convienent to let everyone off as quickly as possible than have people unable to reach the read of the bus because its blocked by a group trying to exit and delaying when the bus can leave? I don’t know how you determine that someone is mentally retarded for exiting from the front doors… Its sounds a bit Big Brother don’t you think? Damn anyone who doesn’t obey the big yellow signs!
When I lived in halifax I used to take the no.1 Spring Garden all the time. That bus was often packed, especially at around 5. Often there was no room for more passengers to even get on at that time. If I was one of the people up front, I got off at the front doors. I’ve taken enough busses to know you cant always trust the bus driver to wait long enough for people to squirm their way through the crowd and make it to the back doors; it’s happened to me. If I’m sitting at the front, I get off there. If I’m getting on the bus, I use goosd manners and wait for everyone coming out to do so before I get on. The same goes when I’m getting on an elevator.
can we agree the people we’re talking about are the people who are perfectly capable of using the rear door, because the bus is not crowded and access to the rear door is not blocked?also the people who sit at the back of the bus and, when the bus pulls in to their stop, walk all the way PAST the rear door and exit through the front?
Metro Transit nor any fellow passengers can dictate which door a disembarking passenger has to use. The driver, management or passengers can suggest the rear door but if a passenger finds it safer or more convenient to use the front door then too bad for the rest. In fact the NS Utility & Review Board, who governs public bus operations, makes it quite clear that passengers may exit by any normal service door on the vehicle.Perhaps the OP was too rushed to take a quick glance up the stairwell before barging on. If people would just take a second and look up from the ground…
Gimpysaviour: when you start paying for my bus pass each month, i’ll let you tell me which door to use when i get off at my stop, ok? Fucking dolt.
Gimpysaviour: Please stop with the personal insults. It really does nothing but make you look like an idiot with nothing better to do than insult others. Again, I agree with poop.
But Mortimer, if the bus isn’t packed, does it really matter? Do you really care if a couple of people jump out the front door before you get on? It just seems like a pretty trivial thing to get your (not you specifically) panties in a twist about when it probably takes less than a minute. Where I live, people often enter and exit from both sets of doors. It doesn’t seem to bother anyone and the standard is to wait for people to exit first. The only people who get told off are those who insist on barging through the crowd that’s trying to exit.
Lynn, i think the point is that people are waiting to board the bus, and it would be nice if the people who’re leaving don’t ignore the perfectly good rear exist. i think that’s why metro transit posts the “please use rear door” signs — it makes for smoother traffic flow in both directions, in and out. i see your point, but why someone would deliberately eschew the rear door, in favour of the front door, when they know people are going to be entering the bus, is beyond me. seems kind of rude….
I always try to exit by the front door, for a very specific reason: I thank every bus driver I ride with for taking me where I’m going. That’s hardly being “narcissistic”; it’s being polite and respectful to the person who’s providing me a service. If the bus is too full for that, I get off at the back and try to give the driver a thank-you before the front door shuts (assuming we’re still traveling in the same direction).
So you can’t read?Your two bucks is more important than the other person’s two bucks?Last time I saw, the person getting in has only one way to get in.Last time I read when I got on the bus it has a sign that is in yellow and black that says move to the rear.So because you are a cock sucker and feel special you want to fuck up the flow of traffic.Truly you are the vapor that comes out the arsehole of society.
What planet are you from? Do you even understand this conversation at all? Someone waiting 5 seconds for me to get off of the bus is not fucking up the flow of ANYTHING. Who said my $2 was more important than the other guy’s? Smoke another beer, genius.
Seriously, wait your turn to get on… and let those at the front get out… the doors are there for a reason. Not to mention if the bus is full, its not exactly easy to get to the back door , is it?Shut the fuck up and have a little patience… idiot. lol
Even when there are only 5 people on the whole bus, a lot of people use the front doors for the reason that when they started buying new busses, they had the problem of having to dance in front of the back doors before they would open. Most people decided it wasn’t worth the humiliation of trying to get the back door to actually open, so when it was more convenient, they’d use the front. It’s being opened for you no matter which door you choose to exit, and even when no one is getting on the bus. Now that the doors open on their own front and back, a lot of people are just used to exiting though the front door. You also don’t have to worry about the bus driver missing your stop or driving off before you manage to get out, if you’re headed for the front door.
I’m surprised it hasn’t come up yet, but the biggest reason I think people should wait for people to exit before they get on is that passengers have to get off at that stop (through some door) and if a person is close enough to the front door to push past people disembarking, then the bus is not going to leave you before you get on. So just be patient and everyone will get what they want. That said, I think exiting through the rear doors would avoid this “problem” and it does help the flow of people getting on and off the bus. But exiting from the rear is only truly effective if the bus is not too crowded anyway.
That’s freaking hilarious. Too lazy to walk to the back door regardless of you’re proximity to the front door?! Man I saw people walk from the back of the bus to use the front door to avoid opening the back door. They’re just that LAZY! They’ll make the effort to walk, but won’t make the effort to use the back door.
