Yeah you. The one who climbed aboard me for asking a smoker to move away from the bus shelter: Metro Transit has posted in their Riders Guide: Policies and Guidelines: Smoking

In accordance with the Smoke-Free Places Act, smoking is prohibited on all transit vehicles, including the ferry, inside public buildings, and transit shelters.

Smoking is also prohibited within 4 metres (13 feet) of public building entrances and windows, air-intake vents, transit vehicles, and bus shelters.

4 metres honey, 4 METRES away from the bus shelter. Next time you’re told something don’t pretend you know it all when you know shit. Yeah I get it that smokers have rights to indulge in their habit. I have rights to clean air and I need to enforce my air space cuz for some reason bus shelters are like magnets to smokers. —ferretgurl

  1. Not if said joint was passed around and savoured by like-minded individuals. Not going to happen though – overreaction and squawking about trivial shit like a lit cigarette (which is, by the way, still legal) seems to be the norm these days. These same people who are so fucking offended by cigarettes don’t seem to clue in that the entire air around them is polluted with cars, buses and 18 wheelers belching out tons of toxic exhaust.

  2. Oddly, in Amsterdam, they enacted a smoking by-law which states you have to be outside to smoke… tobacco; it doesn’t apply to pot being smoked in the coffeeshops.

If you mix your joint with tobacco, then you must smoke it outside.

    We need coffeeshops…

  3. Those aren’t bus shelters! They are smoking lounges! At least that’s what some smokers seem to think. Funny thing is, it is the non-smokers who end up standing 4 meters away to be able to breathe. It reeks. Not only of fetid smoke. It reeks of stunning self-entitlement, a common affliction since courtesy and respect went out the window. Selective vision is a symptom of this. If you don’t acknowledge the No Smoking signs they don’t apply to you.

  4. Yup, T.T., there’s tons of other pollution surrounding us. This sucks ass too, dontcha think? The diff appears to be that there IS regulation for cigarette smoke emissions. Not so much for the other forms of pollution. More’s the pity.

  5. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again; not really relevant to a bus stop bitch but…

I’m not a smoker; I don’t need the government to tell me what I can and can’t do to myself.
but it used to be that a place of work or business had the option of providing a warm vented area for those who chose to smoke. hell ; some days I bet you didn’t even need to bring your own smokes in there. Non smokers didn’t have to enter these places. great times.
For some reason; this wasn’t good enough and government said NO, let them smoke ONLY outside, where its not our legal liability anymore.

Now the non smoker is subject to more smoke in bus stops, doorways and even public walkways, never mind the mess off butts in the designated “smoking areas” and the numerous fires I’ve personally extinguished.

Maybe I’m crazy ; but I miss those old days

  6. She must’ve been a witchy bitch to warrant writing this up.
Then again… bus rider so 65% chance of crazy right off the bat.

  7. CONFUSION OVER METRIC MEASUREMENT

“Smoking is also prohibited within 4 metres (13 feet) of public building entrances and windows, air in-take vents, transit vehicles, and bus shelters.” ferretgurl

Clearly, the the Angry Young Woman either was unable to convert English measure to metric – difficult for even those adept at math – or had failed to equip herself with a metric tape measure. She suffered from confusion over metric measurement and is to be pitied rather than chastised.

    A pleasure as always.

    Cheerio!

  8. OB if you don’t like the way I drive stay off the damn sidewalk ….. In other words if a smoker at a bus stop is bothering you .
Then YOU might try moving 4 meters away from them IF it really bothers you so damn much

  9. Op you should be a cop. You’re too loud and self important to be a narc. No poker face. But definitely some sort professional nag. Someday you will make a very spineless man very happy.

  10. id stand right by the smoker and make the most obnoxious gob horking noises and then drop loogs right at their feet…if they get disgusted and move, id follow them. lol turnaround is fair play i suppose. if you dont have the decency to consider everyone else around you, or respect the rules and laws in place, then you deserve turnaround…then when you bitch about it here ill be laughing my ass off about the whole thing lol.

  11. @DickKicker, I am no cunt, just a Bitch-er with a capital B ingrate. Never thought of the measuring tape. Can I pull that stick outta yer ass…should do fine, lol.

runsWithScissors…don’t trip over your own fekkin ego as you exit. And hunny, my man’s got spine. Jealous, sis?

  12. More, I’ll stand with the law which says smokers gotta move 4m away, not I. Mad, bro?

Montrealman, sorry but MetroTransit conveniently puts the conversion in their riders guide. Point was raised above…selective vision. If I don’t see it, it doesn’t apply to me.

carry on folks, as if you were normal. Be good being bad.

  13. UmmaGumma, I agree with your post…completely. But I’ll leave that battle for the smokers to take up. They have rights, absolutely. Tobacco is still legal.

What they don’t have, is the right to break the law, which is put in place to protect me from their habit. I don’t want to smoke. They make me when I have to breathe their exhaust. And at said bus shelter, 4m behind the shelter is on Capital Health property where they are forbidden to smoke.

  14. So then you are a deontologist? So above all, rules should be obeyed, whether or not the disobedience is affecting anyone at the time it happens? Because honey, NOTHING is protecting you from anything. You live in a city full of exhaust, smog blowing up from new england and all sorts of doorknobs covered in germs. Smoke blowing in your general direction once isn’t going to do you any harm.

I’d be interested to see how you feel about pot smokers or torrents and whether or not the rules should be applied there too. Or is that “different”?
