Ok, I have heard the argument over and over… you tip bad or don’t tip at all because servers already get paid. Yes, they do, but at minimum wage and I am sure as hell doing more work to make your dining experience enjoyable than other individuals in minimum wage jobs (think fast food or that disgusting coffee everyone drinks). Not that they don’t work hard too but serving is entirely different and when you stiff the server out of their tip, you are also sticking it to the cooks and support staff too (every server has to tip out a percentage of their tips to the rest of the staff in case your ignorance is your reason for tipping poorly). Oh, and those delivery drivers out there deserve your tips too especially if there is no delivery fee. Do you really think delivery drivers all get paid per delivery? Do you really think they want to drive all the way to your house for nothing? Who do you think pays for their gas or insurance? If you don’t want to tip, get off your lazy asses and go pick up your order. Otherwise, suck it up and shell out the tip. —Sick of the cheap ass complainers

  1. Until there is a law, I will tip or not tip as I see fit. I’m sorry but I see the folks at fast food and coffee shops work their asses off and you ain’t no different. So suck it up and do your job. If you don’t like it, get another one.

  2. Dear, OP:

It’s not our concern or interest why you chose to get into the service industry. It’s not our concern what wages you make, whether minimum or not. It’s not the customers’ duty to compensate your wages, choices, disposable income and/or lifestyle. Just do your JOB and maybe you’ll be rewarded for doing so. If not, don’t expect your entitled self to be compensated for your attitude.

  3. Wah, wah, wah…. they seem to come in triplicate every month or two. $5 says there will be another tipping bitch by Wednesday. Le sigh.

  4. You are paid to do this. Tips are earned not mandatory.

Now, stop your fucking whining and bring me my food!

  5. i believe normal tip is 15 percent of bill. before the fucking government throws the rip off tax at you. more, for better service.

  6. OMG…. LIH! Welcome back! I haven’t seen you in ages. I won’t bother commenting on this bitch because I hate these kinds of bitches.

Where the hell have you been?

  7. Here all this time….watching the comments go to hell over the last year….but this one made my blood boil.

Thanks for the friendly welcome back, jonnoman.

  8. flun·ky also flun·key (flngk)
    n. pl. flun·kies also flun·keys
    1. A person of slavish or unquestioning obedience; a lackey.
    2. One who does menial or trivial work; a drudge.
    3. A liveried manservant.

    and you expect 15%???

  9. I tip what I want to BASED on the service received, not the cost of food, numbnuts.
Take this weekend, I went out for supper, took about 5 minutes to get a menu, the server comes back one minute after that asking what I want to eat. I don’t know, so I order a beer and she says she’ll be back in 2 minutes. Almost 10 go by when she returns without the beer mind you. I inquire about that and order my meal, the beer came shortly. The food comes quite fast, but she doesn’t return until I have 1 bite left to ask how the food is (I take 15-20 minutes to eat, I know I am slow but what’s the rush right?), and I would have like a refill on the beer halfway through.

So after that, yes I gave a crappy tip based on service but I hope it was enough to just cover the cooking staff and dishwasher. You want a cut, give better service. Can’t get simpler than that, right?

  10. Another self entitled server bitch. Your whining falls on deaf ears… especially cuz I know you’re not declaring your tips when you do your taxes.

  11. I too based on the service, not based on the amount of the bill. Last night I was out for dinner: the food was fab, the service so-so. My tip reflected that.

Stop whining, stop feeling entitled, stop demanding tips and perhaps you’ll come out ahead. If you don’t like this aspect of your job might I suggest you find a new line of work. Whether your get tipped or not, and the amount of which are all part of your job. You went into this knowing this was how it worked, and now that it has landed square in your lap you are now complaining about it.

I used to serve. I was just happy to come home with tips at the end of the day. Some days were better than others, that is just the nature of the job. If you do not feel you are being paid fairly by your employer then it is time to take it up with him/her, or find new work.

  12. As an aside, does anyone know that the “tipout” is for the staff? 5%? 7%? Since the restaurants expect you to tip 15%, they must have some number for the cooks/dishwasher/managers.

  13. Where does all the entitlement come from? You, YOU, chose a shitty service job knowing that you get crap pay. Customers aren’t there to supplement your income. We give you a tip for good service, if it wasn’t, tough shit.

Don’t even get me started on the fact that I lose a large chunk of my pay to the government and (most) wait staff don’t even declare the tips that they say they deserve and think of it as part of their salary

  14. yet again another person who applied for a job, received an offer, accepted the position at the stated salary and yet expects that the customer supplement their wage with a tip! ~ Here is a TIP for you…….your hourly rate is your wage and tips are to be considered a taxable bonus. ~ Not that fuking hard to understand for those of us who do not work in the industry……seems those who accept these positions never had it explained to them. ~ Not our problem!

  15. I swear the more I read these *you have to tip me or else* kind of bitches from all the entitled servers out there, the more I hate actually tipping when I go out. Like others have said, its not our fault you have to tip out at the end of the night. If you want people to leave you tips then you better be damn sure your pulling out all the stops for your customers. Nobody gets something for nothing, if you want to bum for change maybe try some of theintersections around here or SGR. Fuck you should be happy for what you are getting… Tax free cash in your pocket no less. Funny you don’t see to many bitches from cooks or dish guys and I bet they work harder.

  16. I always tip but keep in mind OP that a lot of the people who are tipping (or who aren’t) work minimum wage jobs too.. without tips.

It’s difficult for some people to find the money to go out to eat, let alone tip you. Don’t say they shouldn’t be able to enjoy a meal just because they don’t make enough to tip you.. sometimes people are away from home and HAVE to eat out.

Anyway, if you want big tips try working at a bar.. or go back to school and get a better job if minimum wage isn’t good enough for you.

  17. Boo fucking hoo, it’s thanks to bitches like this that I tip based on the entire dining experience. Suck it up, buttercup.

  18. I start out with a tip percentage in mind when I first enter a restaurant, and then with each thing the server fucks up, I reduce it. Some get a full tip, some get squat.

  19. Speaking of delivery drivers, not the same of course but i’d like to mention the guy who delivered my packages the other day, i was happy enough to go down to the apartment lobby and pick them up myself but he brought the two 30lb boxes up to the apartment for me with a smile and no complaints. Some people would say yeah but thats in his job etc, but i thought he did an excellent job and i wish i had cash to tip the man, in that view thats why i tip.

  20. Sebastian probably complains about the service completely when he tries offering his phone number or BBM to cute servers.

  21. I used to tip, but after I started reading all the repetitive tipping bitches written by whiny-ass servers on this site I stopped completely. I no longer tip in restaurants at all because the asinine bitches servers write on here has lead me to believe that every server is an entitled fucktard. Well, I’m sure not everyone is, but I’d rather never tip anyone than risk giving my money away to a the type of douchebag server who writes this drivel. Don’t like it? See if I give a shit, more money in my pocket. You can’t do shit all about it assholes. I’m gonna save up all that money and go on a trip or something, because honestly, I believe I deserve my hard earned cash more than dickwads like the OP.

  22. I love serving in HRM…Especially the great customers who puke and destroy the resturant and I have to stay 2 hours past my shift to clean puke out of the mens urinals and wipe mustard and ketchup off the walls, and paint the bathroom stalls because theres graffiti all over them. I love getting my ass kicked on busy nights, it makes time go by faster but when im running my ass off so that everyone can be happy and taken care of efficently, I don’t have time to deal with puke and childish behavior, I dont have time to run down the street after you left me with a 100 dollar tab that I…not the resturant…I…have to pay for. I agree, tipping comments are annoying and It upsets me to think that people refuse to tip now because of these posts but its hard work and most of the time its not worth it….my choice I stay….but next time you’re out to eat…look at the server, watch how many tables him or her have and decide from that point if he or she deserves an extra gratutity or gratuity at all. There are alot of things to take into consideration and judging all servers is just wrong. Tip accordingly to the service. And last but not least….I always remember a face…Good tippers I will go above and beyond for….people who put an X in the tip spot then come in every second night…..we all know who you are and good luck ever getting anything better then the bare minimum!

  23. p.s. I claim every cent I make on tips….No way im getting a mortgage on minimum wage income assessment. So its not free money for every server…. I love the preconceived notion that servers are tax cheaters and don’t contribute….. Lets just say the same about entrepreneurs….Stop being so judgemental!!!!

  24. Well, if you don’t do your job, we won’t come back. No customers, no restaurant, no job. I still think the people who work in fast food work a hell of a lot harder than a typical restaurant server. Again a tip is given or not given freely. There are many people who work minimum wage jobs who work hard without tips. What makes you so special?

  25. When’s the last time you went to a fast food restaurant and your “server” poured your drink or asked if you needed a refill? Or perhaps you know of gourmet fast food places I should start to frequent?

  26. I tip 15% for good service, more on smaller tabs ie. usually at least 20% on anything under $20 and usually more on larger tabs when I’m part of a large group that has commandeered extra tables and chairs and requires a lot of service.

On rare occasions I will reduce that 15% to almost zero if I have a clear understanding that the server is providing poor service AND just doesn’t seem to care, but this happens very rarely.

I don’t reduce the tip for kitchen mistakes or longer waits during a lunch or dinner rush or server mistakes that are corrected and handled with grace.

    Maybe I’m a sucker, but that’s how I roll.

If you’re eating out, you should understand that you are partaking of a dining experience and expect to carry your end. Don’t be niggardly with tips. Show some class.

Now pass the Grey Poupon please.

  27. Miss C O ..you claim all your tips.. I’ve worked in the industry for like 30 yrs. and you must be the first .. why would you (claim like half you’ll never get audited)

  28. Yoshi, it doesn’t matter they are still working their asses off and in the same industry. When was the last time you tipped a convenient store clerk, a security guard, gas jockey or anyone else in the service industry that work for minimum wage? Like I said, what makes you so special?

  29. Bro Tim, do you ask convience store clerks to change their products especially to suit your needs? ie “I don’t want any peanuts in this Oh Henry bar” or do you ask your gas jockey to take time out of his already busy day to clean off the booster seat for your child? Come on. I am a server, and generally I don’t mind if a rare costumer/table doesn’t tip. Not everyone is going to. But I’ve said this before, if you ask us to go above and beyond as most of you do, then tip.
And by the way, we pool our tips at my work. The kitchen gets 25% and the rest is split amoung the amount of servers working. And we all claim our tips.

  30. Which is what you signed up for. It’s called your job. You chose it, live with it. We all have to do extra things in our various jobs, stroke customers/clients, things we don’t like. Stop your bellyaching.

  31. As for thinking you should get extra because you have to clean up after customers in the bathrooms, so do those who work in fast food and people trash those too. Again nothing special. Maybe you should talk to Survivor, I’m sure she’ll be sympathetic to your plight.

  32. So if I don’t tip because you sucked at doing your job, the next time I come in you are going to do (maybe) the bare minimum? Are you fucking kidding me? If you are only willing to do what you are paid to do based on tips then you don’t deserve to say that you “work really hard” when in fact you only work really hard when you get tips! If you are going to withold service in an effort to punish customers for not tipping then you don’t deserve the tip in the first place you arrogant, self-obsorbed tit!

By the way, having worked as a gas attendant I can tell you that I have, in addition to pumping gas, cleaned windshields, tires, checked tire air pressure, put air in tires, checked oil, put oil in, checked and put in windshield washer fluid, helped with loading packages onto trucks and into trunks, carried out bags of items purchased at the store attached to the station, cleaned up gas spills that other customers made, cleaned toilets, mopped floors, stocked shelves, etc. and I didn’t get a goddamned extra cent over my minimum wage pay cheque. So shut the hell up!

By the way, I have worked at a server at a bar and regardless of the drunk, stupid, foolish dicks I dealt with on a regular basis, I treated them all with respect and equal service because I’m a fucking decent human being – even though I had to stay until 4am to clean up their, shit, piss and vomit!

  33. Just … wow. Servers: do you really think your only job is to take an order and that’s it? You act like writing down “without cheese” on a pad of paper entitles you to more money. And cleaning up after people, that’s a requirement at ANY place of work because you are to uphold a certain set of health standards. I worked at a sub place, one of those ‘horrid’ and ‘lazy’ fast food places you like to go on about. You know what I did for minimum wage and no tips? I actually made the food as well as take an order. Imagine that! I dealt with drunk people too as we were located next to a bar. We baked the bread, seasoned the bread, cleaned everything all the time (including the bathrooms), worked cash, and prepped absolutely every food item there. You think the vegetables just come all nice and cut up? You think all of the meat comes all nicely weighed and sauced and seasoned? But I did not get tips and didn’t expect them as I excepted a minimum wage job. I also worked as a head cashier/supervisor at a drug store and dealt with more crap than you can imagine. But you know what? I knew it was all part of my job. And I got paid less than a dollar over minimum wage for being a supervisor. I even had to do bookkeeping, like the bank deposit and keeping the safe balanced. I did not get tipped there either. Seriously, you should be thankful to have job where you do make more than minimum wage every shift including your tips, with zero education. You should be very thankful and complaining to customers for your boss not paying you well is absolutely disgusting. Get a new job. Maybe at a really easy and lazy fast food place?

  34. “Don’t be niggardly with tips. Show some class”
    “How Ironic”

Hey Tributetoalanismorrissette, how exactly is that ironic ?

  35. Use of the word niggardly ≠ Classy? Maybe ironic is the wrong word for it. Perhaps contradictory or incongruous would make more sense.

Either way, I’m going to tip whatever I feel like tipping because following some fucked up set of social rules just so people working terrible jobs don’t have to feel so bad about working at that job is bullshit.

  36. Nope TLB – still not getting it. What is contradictory or incongruous about niggardly & classy in the same sentence?

    Morning Hugo.

  37. After reading your second response I began to wonder if I was the one who was missing something. I’m ashamed that I have never actually looked up the word “niggardly” before considering how often I check the definition of words I’ve never heard.
    Thank you, Col.
    As you were!

  38. >: ) No problem TBL. This is actually the 2nd time in a month that I’ve taken the Commandante’s side against a possible accusation of “thought crime” ME!.
Now that’s effin’ ironic. He He He. Have a good one. Smoke ’em if ya gottem.

  39. I know the word “niggardly” has come under attack in various quarters for its supposed associations with that other “n” word. I find the arguments unconvincing, mostly because the word “niggard” was in common usage with its current meaning long before the other “n” word came into existence.

When I was younger I would frequently hear the words “jewed” or “gyped” used to signify getting taken advantage of in some kind of transaction. Now those are both cases where an ethnic reference is used in a pejorative sense that bolsters an ethnic stereotype and I DO object to that usage.

Ivan, I’m don’t know what shocks me more: being accused of “thought crime” or being defended by you! I’m going to have to sit down and think about this for a while.

  40. Hugo,

You know what you need to do to have a show here.

Stand in front of the bathroom mirror and repeat THAT name three times . . .

  41. What? No massive buildup in Australia while waiting to breakout and conquer the world after the other combatants have foolishly weakened themselves in constant fighting trying to hold those high value continents like Asia and Europe?

I’m shocked at the lack of strategic thinking displayed by these guys!

  42. Lolz, you guys are funny. Great poster Ivan.

Ok, I’m in front of my mirror, “Tori Praver, Tori Praver, Tori Praver”…..damm, no show 🙁

  43. Ditto ‘Easy Going Gal’ and ‘melectric’

And all the comments from servers on here has made me realize that I have made the right decision. I’m never tipping, ever again.

Tipping should just be completely abolished as an expectation in restaurants.

  44. Has anyone ever had a tip refused? I have, and on more than one occasion, latest were a Tire shop on Barrington, they stayed open late for a job that they didn’t have to do, and another was an ‘amphibian’ motorcycle place in Dartmouth, buddy got out of the shower & reopened the shop so I could have my bike for the weekend.
