Is there a reason for the lack of choice in your establishments? Have the fashion victims taken over so much that you cater solely to them? The reason I’m asking is because of the lack of choices out there if a person is not into the latest trend. It’s nearly impossible to buy anything if you don’t like a) loose hanging tops with gathered sleeves, b) jeans with low sitting back pockets that make everyone sport a uni-butt, c) extremes in shoe heel heights, either five inch stilettos or flat ballerinas or gladiator sandals, d) purses that have only short straps and are big, gathered monsters and e) hideous patterns that look like a seventies throw pillow has exploded all over you.
I know fashion styles come and go and a lot of it is usually ugly, but until now I have always managed to find some good stuff in amongst the trends wherever I shopped. I like to dress nicely and I also only dress for what suits my body type. I don’t follow trends. I know that makes me a minority, apparently, but that’s the way it is. I’ve taken to ordering clothes online just so I can get something new. Funny how so much variety can exist elsewhere, but not here. It’d be nice if some of the stores here brought in the odd piece that isn’t so dead-on trend and maybe they could up their sales for the day just a little bit more. I know fashion victims are a stores best friend, but every sale counts.

Clothing stores have never, in the history of the world, sold clothes that were “out of fashion”. If it’s in a store, then it’s someone’s idea of fashionable.
The fact that you can’t find anything you like is because a) you’re not looking in the right stores, b) your sense of “fashion” is SO different from the rest of society that they don’t make those clothes, or c) you’re old and are longing for the “good old days” and are unwilling/unable to change with the rest of society.
I don’t follow the major fashion trends, but I rarely have much trouble finding some stylish in a different way kinds of clothes around. And if I really cant, or really want something in particular that doesn’t exist, I make it. I suggest you take up sewing.
You might try hitting the second hand shops. You will have to pick through a ton of crap but they’re usually a good source for good quality, “classic” pieces and the price can’t be beat.
I’m with Jai – I can’t shop in stores anymore because women’s shirts are so fucking ridiculously short – when you have twin zepps like me, you don’t need an article of clothing making you look like a fucking Sherman tank in drag.
This is Halifax, the land of conformity. Lately, two styles rule: Hipster and Granola. The hipsters are the funny ones, because they all have the same stupid emo haircuts and “rock” clothes with dumb sunglasses. And when you laugh at them or tell them they look stupid, their only comeback is “you’re old.” Ha ha.
You always paint such lovely mental pictures TTFN 🙂
Shop online for the best choices.
I laugh at the girls with the tight spandexy pants and the ugly short jumper skirts. Makes them look like hookers! Try waving a $5 bill in front of them and asking them when they finish their shifts down on Hollis and Gottingen.
Agreed with Jai – if you go to a decent thrift store you can even get clothes that look new.
Lack of choice? Who the fuck are you shitting. We have more choice of what to wear, eat, drive or anything else in the world. Try a third word country if you really want to know the meaning of “lack of choice”.
People like this really piss me off. Appreciate what you have. Fuck.
If you can’t find something at” Winners”, well, for lack of a better word you are a “Loser”. They have all styles all sizes for all ages.
Try Frenchys in South Center mall, they have really nice clothes. Women these days seem to only wear black tights and a little skimpy shirt with no underwear and no bra and the tights are so tight that they roll down and their ass and pussy fall right out. I start laughing, its too funny!
Thanks for all the helpful (and not so helpful) advice. A few rebuttals:
I do sew, it’s my main source of tailoring clothes to fit me, but it’s a pain to make things from scratch and never looks quite that good. I’ve gone to thrift stores on occasion, they can be a good resource.
No, stores do not sell something unless it’s in fashion. My point is that there are other things in fashion right now, but none of the local places carry it, therefore, I shop online where there’s greater choice. Sorry, if I’m not interested in wearing what looks like a maternity top with a pair of spandex leggings and ballet flats. It’s just not my style.
Bro Tim- when I move to a third world country, then yeah, I’ll keep my complaining to a minimum, but I live in a large enough city, that expecting everyone to wear identical clothes, is ridiculous. Really, the malls could just have one woman’s store and that’s all they’d need. The stuff in all of them is interchangeable and you can’t tell one shop from another. Where is the choice there?
dont blame fashion, you bitter fuck. the clothing stores here sell ugly clothes that ARE NOT in fashion. Thats why the clothes are fucking ugly. You also sound like a rigid-minded ignoramus who can’t dress.
Also, all trends aren’t great, they certainly don’t always flatter a woman’s body. But don’t blame fashion because you cant find an outift to make yourself presentable. Open your fucking mind and take a risk, don’t be afraid to express something different. If you want som eplain simple shit, go to fucking suzy shit where you can find tonnes of non-patterned, cotton plain shit to make you look like every other motherfucker walkin around.
I think the OP should go visit Europe. She’ll never come back
Hahaha, onetime, you sound more bitter than I could ever dream of being.
I don’t recall blaming fashion, I’m blaming the local stores and their lack of variety. My style is anything but plain and I definitely don’t blend with every other “motherfucker” walking around. I just don’t see any reason to buy stuff that isn’t flattering to my body just because it’s all that is available.
The point of my original post was to point out that this is a recent problem. I’ve had no trouble finding things to wear in amongst all the different styles that were available up until this last year. Suddenly, the stores are limiting what they have available to one style that is only flattering on a select few. Why can’t they have some shaped, fitted tops in amongst the loose flowy ones? Why can’t they put out shoes with a two or three inch heel, instead of flat or stilletto? Because they’re limiting themselves to the safety net of knowing that mindless trend followers will buy whatever they stock the store with no matter what it looks like.
If you want to read more into my rant than is there, then feel free. I just wanted to vent, and if that gets your knickers in a knot to the point that you have to call me a bitter fuck then that says more about your state of mind, than mine.
Kay, I’ve been to Europe. That’s why I know there’s more out there and know what to look for online. I don’t expect to have as much choice as they do, I do realize this is a small city in comparison, but seriously, the limitations right now is just irritating.
When I wrote the bitch, I knew I’d get an array of responses. Some good, some snarky, some funny, but I really didn’t expect to be called names and told that my kind of person “pissed them off”. Seems extreme under the circumstances. Didn’t realize there’d be so much defense of our local retailers. I thought somebody would agree with me. My bad.
Maybe there’s more to life than playing dress-up, OP? There MUST be a better bitch in you that isn’t really bothered by trivial crap. Or maybe your whole person is defined by your clothing? It’s very sad “people pleasing” behavior in my opinion.
ROFL, TDF, There are always people who post stuff like that… look back at the last 3 weeks of posts and you’ll see the kind of skin you need.
That being said, you have to understand that the stores cater to a style; particularly here in Halifax, we are fairly square, and far from other hubs, so stores have to stock what should sell, right? You can fly to Portland for $75 according to a billboard I saw. Hit the outlets, fly back, and Robert is your Mother’s brother.
Just wait, H&M is opening, and it will be wonderous.
Whatever happened to raiding second hand clothing stores? If you don’t like what’s “in style” THIS season, go to Vallue Village and find something someone trhough out from LAST season
Once again, this seems logical to me, but I might be on a different wave length from well…. everyone…
I have to agree with you TDF.
Even if I tried to follow the “trends” I probably wouldn’t be able to. Too short to wear flats (look ever shorter haha), I can’t walk in heels, never really understood the whole Ugg faze, etc.
In the rare occasion that I go shopping though, I’ll probably find something nice.
OMFG TTFNNNN I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN ABOUT THE SHORT SHIRTS.
I’m a shorty, but I have an extremely long waist (and short little legs, heh) and it’s really hard finding something long enough. And once I do half the time it shrinks up in the wash (on cold water and hung to dry)! FFS.
My mom also has huge boobs and has the same problem you do.
We were in heaven a few years back when the longer shirt styles were in, and I can still find stores that carry the longer shirts, but my mom’s in her 50s and those styles are often too “young” for her, she finds.
What really REALLY fucking bugs me about clothing stores is how every goddamned clothing manufacturer thinks every woman out there has a huge ass and thighs. I have neither! So, when I find a pair of pants to fit my waist the pants look like baggy ass grunge pants from 1993. My waist is one size and my legs fit into a pant that’s 3-4 sizes smaller. Even skinny pants are too big! I had hope for the long and lean from the gap but NOPE TOO FUCKING BAGGY. I know other women who have the exact same issue too. I have like ONE pair of jeans that looks decent on me and they’re old ass old navy jeans that aren’t really all the presentable anymore. *sigh*
A T-shirt and a pair of jeans work for me.
Thanks Guyute, I know that it can get bad on this board, I just never expected such a hateful attack by two certain posters over a fashion rant. I must’ve struck a nerve with them for some reason.
Kay- no , clothes are not my whole life, I just like to look nice. There’s nothing wrong with that. As for having a better bitch in me that isn’t so trivial, yeah, I do, but I wouldn’t dare post any of them. If this bitch got so much vitriol, I’d hate to think what something more serious would get. I don’t need the hatred, thanks.
Heheh, Pretty Kitty, I have the opposite problem as you. I have a J-Lo type butt(only smaller) and a tiny waist, by the time I find jeans to fit my over the ass, then the waistline is huge. That’s where my tailoring skills come in to play. Somewhere out there is a woman that the jeans in stores actually fit. Wonder who she is.
That would be me, TDF. Thanks
Have you tried more “conservative” stores like Reitmans, perhaps? Their sizing is often more indicative of “real women” than other stores, and you can usually get classic styles there.
Banana Republic is also another place where you can get some classic pieces. It *is* a bit pricey, but I know of people who are still wearing BR pieces from 10 years ago and they still look great (classic styling and durability). So you def. get your money’s worth there.
Maybe, TDF, you can give me your extra waist and I’ll give you my extra pant ass and legs, then we’ll both have the perfect pair of pants 😛
OP
i am in the same boat everytime i go to get a pair of jeans they ahve been bedazzled with some gems or shit on the back pockets i am not a fan, i like t shirts not these fancy tops.
For jeans i recommend thifties mogan there awesome!
shirts i would recommend the super store there cheap and plane!
oh TDF i didnt mean to sound so cruel. I just wanted to respond to a certain attitudinal tone that i picked up in your post. Perhaps trying to combat one attitude with another, more viscious attitude is not the most productive approach sometimes. anyway, i do understand what you mean about the middle ground – it would be nice if they sold some cute mid – sized heels here in Halifax. That would still however, go under my last post’s comment about the stores in Halifax not being in fashion which would include not having variety if styles and trends etc. There are some, and remember that STYLE IS FREE, fashion costs money, but still, it sometimess feels as though there is little inspiration here.
i was perhaps anticipating and attitude that i do not agree with and reacting to it. that attitude was the close minded about fashion, and new things in general. anyhow, yes i also understand what you mean about the flowy tops and that. i dont understand why so many women like to walk around in these little babydoll-ish tops and think they look so adorable. i mean it does look cute on some girls, but if your a shorter, curvier girl you want to show off your small waist and shape, not cover it up with an empire waisted top. i understand that bit as well.
