I’m starting my apartment search many months early. Because my landlord is sketchy and incapable of doing his job, there are rats living in my ceiling and I’m pretty sure it’s an illegal apartment.
So why am I living here in the first place?
Because I have a dog and it seems like the only way to have a dog in this city is to make over $40,000 a year, so you can afford the apartments that let dogs in.
Or just subject yourself to subpar living conditions.
My dog is well behaved, well trained and a way better tenant than my cats. And yet, cats are allowed almost everywhere, it seems.
So, I don’t know what I’m going to do. Stay another year in this place, god willing the ceiling doesn’t cave in on me first or maybe become a high class call girl so I can make the money that allows me to live in semi-comfort with my dog.

That’s the worst. Shop around and wait a little while till there’s a break in the rut. At least you have your dog…I wouldn’t compromise my best friend for anything.
There is an apt building in the south end of halifax that does allow dogs
keep looking, maybe find someone (that likes your dog) to share a place with. Look into housing or co-ops you don’t have to be on welfare, they like working people too. There are alot of places around the northend too.
Have you considered losing the dog? There’s a reason no one wants to house your shit-piss-and-noise machine.
Id pay an extra 100 a month to live in a place that keeps you out.
Park Vic and Ogilvie on the Park allow pups 🙂 Ogilvie is a lil outta the way but most of the Apts are renovated and reeally nice and roomy. Not bad pricing either
Maybe you should have thought about the availablity of dog friendly housing before you went and got yourself one. Maybe you should have considered the fact that a dog really should have a yard to play/run in and not be confined to an apartment all the time. Maybe you should consider the fact that while a cat can destroy property just as easily as a dog, it doesn’t bark, keeping people awake or just plain annoying the shit out of them. Maybe you should quit whining about a problem you brought on yourself by a) getting the dog and b) moving into the shitty apartment in the first place and c) not taking the time/effort to find a suitable place for a dog. I couldn’t give two flying fucks less about your living conditions, but your dog shouldn’t have to deal with that. And guess what, it’s not your landlord’s fault, it’s your fault. You got the dog, not him/her. You’re responsible for finding suitable accomodations. Grow up and take responsibility for your own decisions.
Park Vic is an overpriced HOLE.
Ogilvie on the Park looks nice though 🙂
I did consider dog-friendly housing before I got the dog and I suppose I misjudged the availability of apartments that allow dogs. Because a lot of apartments advertised as “Pet-Friendly” really just mean “Cat-Friendly”.
My apartment has a backyard. The backdoor leads right into the yard so she’s free to come and go as she pleases. Yes, she barks when someone comes to the door, but she doesn’t keep my upstairs neighbors awake because she’s asleep when we’re asleep.
When I moved into the apartment it seemed fine, it took about three months before shit started falling apart and when we’d ask the landlord about it, he’d say “Oh yeah, I called a guy to come fix it.” How was I supposed to know that he was a sketchy douche? It’d be a fine apartment if he did his job as a landlord, but he doesn’t.
As for not taking the time to find a suitable place, my lease is up at the end of August. It’s the first of May and I’m already looking for apartment. Is that not enough time?
Also, losing the dog is not an option.
